The stockman punch thread

Yeah I think I follow that adage too often!
Is that severe blade rub between the punch and sheepsfoot or something else going on in the joint?
I ordered the smooth black synthetic one last night. I got it to use. I don’t really care about the cosmetic effects of blade rub, but if it’s so severe that the spring can’t overcome the friction... seems like Case needs to address that. In my mind blade rub should really only happen when you’re opening the knife. The rub comes when your fingernail is trying to get a purchase in the nail nick.

It's just blade rub. The punch snaps closed unless you lower it slowly. And that's just my two copies -- not sure about whether it's all 18PUs. It hits the upper part of the sheepsfoot and doesn't come close to the bevel so won't damage my sharpened edge. Also the punch has a slight bevel and mine was pretty sharp out of the box. I actually cut myself with it when I was working all the grit out. The blade rub is on the beveled side of the punch, not the cutting edge side, so it won't dull from the rub.

I think this happens because the sheepsfoot is a bit thicker along the spine and feels like it has a hollow ground taper. That makes it easier to pinch open. Because of that, I end up using that blade all the time and the main blade less. But it also causes some of the blade rub and hang up in my last pic.

I didn't mean to worry you -- just wanted you to know in case blade rub bothers you. I think and hope you'll love it as much as I do!

Fun to see this thread pop up again. I love this pattern and blade combo. I looked in my drawer just now and discovered I no longer have any stockmans with punches! How on earth did that happen? I gave them away without realizing I hadn’t saved one for myself. My gifting has far exceeded my acquiring in recent years, which feels good.

Really enjoyed scrolling through the pics in this thread (sad to see some are missing!)

Add some more!

Bump - I'm interested in the recent Case offerings of the medium stockman with punch. Besides black synthetic, yellow synthetic and amber bone, are there any other covers available? Thanks.
