The Survive! Never Say Die! Chat Thread

I know I couldn't do that here mine stay in my truck bag or in my safe. Too many shady people in this area to trust my valuables just out and not under lock and key. I would be furious if I lost all of my knives. I still have a drawer full of knives and junk though, just cause I don't have that much safe space. :( guess I need to buy a new safe for my guns so my knives have a home.

I completely agree, the end goal is to build a frame around it and conceal the contents in a faux picture frame type fixture thing. It wont be as secure as a safe, but hopefully wont give away that it's hiding something. Here its more about not looking like a Dexter in training than theft, but i would likely hit the roof if someone sticky fingered my knives.

I'll throw these photos up for you. I made a picture frame for a wall mount flatscreen tv that stuck out from the wall almost 6in. out of huge crown molding.

It takes a bit of backing and blocking but it came out pretty cool.

It sure did. That looks great man.

Redwood, have you got any use on that DC4 to see if you like it?

Not yet, came in 2 days ago. Its really small but well made and will fit in the pouch really well. I will try it out on some older knives first and report back.

Standard, that is basically exactly what i was thinking. Couldnt decide on a mirror or some sort of artish type thing...unsure. with a hinged door to conceal the goods.

That'll be pretty cool either way! I like the idea of hiding spots that out in the open.

I've got a couple sheaths coming that will accept a dc3/dc4. I've heard they can start off pretty aggressive, but then break in and hold a consistent grit.

funny you should mention that, they def have a roughness too them, but the instructions even mention this and say with use it will smooth out. i should have kept the insert but did not. its a very good travel size, though i imagine sharpening a large knife would be tedious

Yeah I wouldn't want to do big jobs for sure, just touchups in a pinch. It'll be interesting to see how they perform.

i may have made a small old knife a bit duller haha, still a work in progress, I figured I would practice on something small to start..

You can use it on large bladed knives. Just simply lay the knife down and move the stone in small circular motions in the same angle. I keep a 1x3 fine Arkansas stone in my pack just for touch ups. I even use it on my axes and hatches no problem. :)

that's actually exactly how they recommended using it, I was starting small just to get a handle on it better, I still need to go through my "learn to sharpen better" life journey and figure out what works best for me... so many different options/techniques

OK OK not done, by a long shot but an update:

The 5.0 and neckers will need to be re organized once a few more things come in. and of course I need to conceal the whole setup still..

It looks good redwood!

I tried out a number of different hooks and I am a bit anal about things, so I am going to plasti-dip the back end of the standard galvanized hooks to reduce rattle, but thats still in the amazon shipping channels, as are some back up hooks... I will def update as the project moves forward....was proud of the wife, all she had to say was "save my 3.5 a spot for when it gets here!!

She's a keeper.

Very nice! I'm looking forward to seeing how the project develops
If you find yourself in a typing mood I'd be interested in a run down of everything in the collection that might not be immediately recognizable.

Do you think of this storage method as an easy way to see and grab what you need as well as long term storage?
