Tell me again about your rc6. I did a quick googling, but kept getting redirected to the ESEE 6. Anyways the weight on that is listed as 11.8 oz.
As far as the GSO 5.1 it sounds like it could be perfect for your needs, but between the solid steel, micarta and kydex I think the weight will be up there.
Silver Needle, the RC6 is called the ESSE 6 now. It was called RC6 when the company used to be called RAT Cutlery. Is the same knife. A Mike Rowan design. It's a great knife. Tough as nails and great edge retention. Also touches up with just a few swipes to a razors edge. It comes with a no questions asked warranty. I just found it a tad heavy and squarish at the handle. It could just be me being anal due to the fact that I've been using the same type of knife for 30 years. It's like wearing boxer shorts for 30 years and one day put on bikini underwear. You'll be picking at it for a week![]()

Thanks for educating me! I feel silly not knowing that (I think you even mentioned it a few posts ago) since I own a ESEE 6 myself. I think I had stuck in my head a current model they sell with other letters in the name. A big difference is the ergonomics of the handle. Between my GSO 5 (my favorite knife ever) and my ESEE 6, the GSO handle is much more ergonomic. It is more rounded where the tang is exposed and if you look at the knife from the spine, the handle slabs have a "Coke bottle" shape with a nice swell in the middle.
Great analogy by the way![]()
H minus, I am jumping in a bit late in the discussion but i would say the 5.1 sounds like the best bet. I have a 4.1 that is very similar (as far as survive knives go) to a kabar size wise, but i am not sure it would do well for chopping or digging. I have a 5.1 on order and think it will do better in that regard. One thing guy does really well is adapt a design to various size ranges, If you started with a 5.1 and decided you wanted something smaller/larger you could always sell it and move (up or down). Selling is a whole nother can of worms, but I am sure we could help with that too. As the guys said, ask as many questions as you want. I think everyone wants to foster an environment of easy to get quality information because at the end of the day, none of us have money to waste and our goals are all similar: find the right knife for our needs and go out and use the dang thing!
Redwood, great input! The 5.1 seems to be the best for me all around. I'm not worried about having to sell later on. That's the reason I'm going to great lengths to make the right choice the first time around. I'm not in the habit of coughing up $240 for a knife (all my knives except for the RC6 are sub $100). If I do it once, I'll keep it for life.
I completely agree, I have sold some, but prefer not to and usually only if its a duplicate. The first fixed blade i spent even close to $200 on was the 4.1 and it led to what my wife calls a "knife binge". No steel, even super steels is impervious (rocks come to mind) to everything but the 3v on these knives is pretty crazy. as a few more of the 5.1's start to roll out more videos and forum reviews will pop up, and that might help as well. Definitely stick around! these are some of the most helpful guys that you can find on a knife forum, though we have a knack for saying stuff like "buy them all" and "you'll get addicted" and silly nonsense like that...
I had to be a sweetheart and leave a few comments.
Exactly. If you've had to manage a business then you know that tax season is NOW. Not April 15th like for private citizens. My business only has to produce w-2s for 3 employees this year, but it's always a struggle to get that done, and they have to be distributed by Feb. 1. Not to mention 941s, 940s, 967s, 1099s, W3s........those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head. Most of those will already have had to be filed this month. I can about guarantee that Ellie is doing those in-house for the company, like we do here. Having a full-time accountant is just too expensive, and no one else is going to look after your business as good as you will do for yourself. It would be nice to punch out at 5 and forget about it for a few hours, but it just doesn't work that way.
On a 'light'er (<- see how i did that) note. I got me a Olight coming. 500 LM then tones down to 300 after a few minutes. The guy who told me bout them said they have copper, brass, aluminum, and titanium. I got the aluminum cause I'm a cheap skate.![]()
