The "Talk me out of it" thread

Anyway, this thread was not supposed to be just about me and this one knife. It's for others too.

If someone posts a knife they're in lust with and thinking of shelling out for, but someone else who is emotionally cool can see some flaws in the logic? It would genuinely be helpful.

As the OP of the "self control" thread you mentioned, I'll say thanks for the kind reference and echo another here, not too likely to find anyone talking you out of a purchase here. lol
But since you asked, I too will try to "talk you down" as it were.
At the risk of angering the CS fans, they just are not my cup of tea. I have owned 3 in my life. One I bought back in the 80's and sold off somewhere along the way. Never missed it. Another was a gift. Having been to Cold Steel's parking lot sale that they hold 2x a year, I can offer up these observations. One is that I was unable to find an acceptably sharp knife anywhere. They may have all been factory seconds, but that was not indicated as far as I could tell. Two, CS's marketing is not exactly appealing or convincing to me. In all my years, I have never once needed or wished to have a knife I could use to clean and gut, or even simply defend myself against a Buick. Not once have I needed to do that! :D

Still your millage may vary and you may live in a different situation than I do. As tony281sc2 wrote, if it is nostalgia for you and fond memories, go for it. We are all here for our own reasons and there are 3 times the number of opinions on anything here than actual BF members. If it works for you, follow your bliss as they say.

There’s something to be said for experimentation with all hobbies. If you are unsure, try anyway - you’ll learn something about yourself and/or the hobby no matter what. Your tastes will refine or broaden, you’ll have more experiences, and, in this case, you’ll have settled a longstanding curiosity.

If you’re trying to keep it cheap, scout eBay and the exchange for a used model. I will say that they have definitely gotten more expensive in recent years, which I would also use as ammunition fornmy argument to skip to the pro version that is the Recon 1. It’s slimmer, the handle texture is better, the steel is better, and the handle shape is more accomodating to different-size hands.

:) I kinda thought you were joking with wanting a thread to discourage knife buying . This site is entirely devoted to the exact opposite .

It's like going into a bar at happy hour and asking the drunken patrons to help you NOT buy a drink !

It's true, but on a more serious side, there are a lot of people here who have an addiction. Whether they're ready to call it a problem is a different matter. ;)

This thread would be like the AA. We have a similar thread over in the Affordables sub-forum at watchuseek. "Watch Purchasing Abstinence Club" Share pix of current collection without encouraging each other. Rip on watches we're thinking of buying. Mild, good-natured insults when someone gets weak, etc.

I wanted to talk you out of it, but then you tossed in the nostalgia bit, and now I think, "Who am I to walk him back off the ledge?" I'm suspecting you've already watched Cold Steel's video for the Voyager, and that had to make you just want it worse. I sure as hell don't need a Cold Steel Torpedo, but by the time their man started stabbing it through a car's hood in that video, I was thinking about ways I could work it in to at least have one in my truck. My best to you with whatever decision you make, and thanks for an interesting post.

This seems to be having the opposite affect of the original intent of the thread!

It’s almost like a group of people who are practiced at rationalizing financially and practically dubious decisions would naturally respond to any amount of questioning or scrutiny with an overwhelming cascade of support for impractical behavior.

Seriously, though, if:
- you can afford to
and
- it results in greater net positives than negatives
Do it.
You get one shot at life, and your opportunities to stimulate your dopamine receptors in a manner that doesn’t cause permanent damage are limited. Adopt a dog, buy the knife, have a drink, and generally embrace nihilistic hedonism as long as it doesn’t harm others.

I agree with Comeuppance Comeuppance , I would rather get a Recon 1 (XL) over a Voyager, particularly the handle on the Recon 1 looks better, if I were to go for a Cold Steel it would be one with something other than a more standard (read practical) blade shapes. Like a Black Talon, Espada or perhaps a Talwar.

We all suffer from the same illness, but if it is what you want and it is not putting you in a stressful situation, then go for it, the advice is sound, try it, like or or not and keep or sell or trade it and the curiosity bug is satisfied. That way you will learn and refine and expand your experience of what knives you really like. I got a Svord small mini peasant to try out for the friction folder idea, once got it put it away and not handled since. Grind is rough and my sharpening skills is not great, and handle is ok. I like my Opinel much better, but I will experiment with it later when the bug hits me again.

In all my years, I have never once needed or wished to have a knife I could use to defend myself against a Buick.

I have never engaged in a knife fight with a Buick, but I once put a Nissan to flight with a Case Stockman.

On topic, I ask myself what will this knife do that another of my accumulation doesn't do? Only then do I begin the rationalization process that allows me to buy one more knife that I don't need.

Sentimental reasons are a great justification to buy a certain knife. Just do it.... if you're like me, it will never or seldom be used for anything anyway.....

I carried a Schrade 250T (2 blade Buck 110 type knife) for years in the woods & field. It was my work knife and hunting knife. As a work knife it saw a lot of cutting of things that wear the edge down quickly. A couple of years ago, I was going to a local knife show. These are the shows where you see many many slip joints on display... thousands.... Decided that I was going to get another 250T to replace my old one. I looked and looked.... ended up buying an as-new one (USA).

Well, I got that out of my system..... But I have changed my knife using habits over a period of years..... and the large belt sheath folder usually gets left at home and i have another work knife..... End result, it is still as new and likely to stay that way. But it felt good to get that one for old times sake.

My trick was to sign up for the Grimsmo Maker's Choice and then wait. By the time I am selected in a year and a half and only have to spend $1K on a knife I would have saved so much more by not buying all those 'gateway' knives, and I end up with a gorgeous knife with high resale vale, if needed... or I could even pass on making the purchase if I was feeling really zany.

Yes, that watch site doesn't help either...

I bought a Henckels Canoe last night on eBay that I swear I don't remember bidding on. How's a 'Talk Me Out of It' thread going to help me?

Not sure which CS voyager the OP is looking for. I had an AUS8 stonewashed large and gifted it to my neighbour. It is a beautiful and strong folder. The stonewash is among the best looking. I heard the current steel AUS10A on it is similar to VG-10. For less than $60, I think it is well worth it.

Go for it! Buy 2 :p
