The "Talk me out of it" thread

The recent "Where can I buy some self-control" thread made me think of this.

I've wanted a Cold Steel Voyager since I was a teeny bopper and they first came out. The clip blade looks great to me. The ugly stippling looks great to me. Not so sure about the aggressive stippling and super strong clip, nor the 4" blade. But the medium doesn't look comfy in the hand.

I've bought knives for weaker reasons than nostalgia. What do you say? Talk me out of it.

If your father carried one that's nostalgia. If you used to carry one that's nostalgia.
If you never carried one that's NOT nostalgia.

Never buy on impulse, if you see a knife and start drooling, wait a month or two.
Does the knife really fit your needs. Ask yourself if the knife will do something a knife you already have can't do.

There's nothing wrong with buying a knife just because you want it but check your budget and ask is it really worth it.

I bought a Henckels Canoe last night on eBay that I swear I don't remember bidding on. How's a 'Talk Me Out of It' thread going to help me?

I could tell you, but obviously you'll never remember it so.... ;)

by "Wait a month or two" I am naturally assuming you mean "Wait what seems like a month or two".
It is the only rational and practical interpretation from what I can tell. o_O

Nope I mean wait one or two calendar months.
I've book marked knives in a wish list folder only to go back and delete the book mark.
The initial lust goes away, works for me.

The recent "Where can I buy some self-control" thread made me think of this.

I thought I'd create a thread for when we're tempted, we KNOW we're about to make a purchase we probably shouldn't, but are getting weak.

Maybe the respondents would point out the weak points of the knife. Maybe they would analyze the poster's collection and say: "You've already got 3 knives JUST LIKE THAT ONE."

etc.

OK, I'll start.

Nope. Now go buy it.

OK, now that I've succeeded so well, is there anyone else who needs to be talked off of the ledge?

Dammit. You bitches are useless.

Here I am, at the AA meeting and you've pushed me toward the open bar.

Well, she's on the way. I'll tell you a story from my youth when I get 'er in my hands in a couple weeks. (I'll be in Poland next week when she arrives)
:) I might have more sympathy if the knife in question was some $6000 Shiro or similar , whilst your children were starving , etc .

Hard to get too worked up over , what ...$50 or $60 for a pretty well proven value . If that's gonna bust the bank , you need a whole new plan for living ! ;)

The reality that fifty or sixty dollars is money that is dear to you if you have children and need to feed them, depending on how things are structured for your family, is something that is not hard to imagine for a lot of folks.

Very true , but in that case , knife collecting is probably not a thing that should be the first priority in the budget . Family obligations should come first , always !

I bought one of those when I was relatively new to knives - years ago, when it was AUS8. It’s a well-designed knife, and all aspects of it scream “work knife” to me.

If you have the liquid cash, I’d honestly suggest going for a Recon 1 instead. The design is similar, but, in my opinion, superior.

Both are very robust knives that are reliable and made with good materials. I will say that an upside of the comparatively inexpensive voyager is that, were you to not like it, you could give it away without it being a particularly significant financial loss.
I almost bought one of the Recon 1s. Instead I bought a Hogue EX-A01 Automatic Knife Tanto. Yes, it's 2.5 times the price of the Recon 1. And no,
I'm not sure how it happened.

This is all most people will ever really need.

Oh and the chance of that making a difference to most here is in the billions to one. :D

Only problem with those is that they're so easy to lose! If it's not to TSA, it's them falling out of the pocket silently.

Oh, and the soft blade steel. A couple weeks ago, I cut maybe a foot's length of carpet, and that was it for the edge. One has to be disciplined to keep them sharp...

Boker has made some similar models with 12C27 Sandvik. I bought one for my dad a couple years back, and he's pleased as punch with it.

If I were truly utilitarian about what I carried, it would probably be one of those... but I'm honest with myself and what I want, so I carry a 3.75"+ single-blade folder about 99% of the time.

Since you pulled the trigger, I'd add that a SnaggletoothMF is a nice addition to it. If you want it "wave-able".

I have mine on my car keys ring. It has been there for decades. I never travel, so TSA isn't a problem. As long as I have my keys I'm good.

Looks like I'm a day late but I was going to say that I've heard that those triad locks sometimes exhibit a teensy bit of vertical play..can you imagine how irritating that would be? Anyway too late now.

I've been lusting after a Steel Will Modus recently, just to try out D2.. if anyone would care to tell me what rubbish they are I would be grateful.

What about $150 to $250? 4 kids dual income?
