The hole on the Southard is functionally useless since it already operates so well as a great flipper. Of course, the hole IS the trade mark.

I agree in part, but I use the spyder-hole to close the Southard's blade with complete control and keep my fingers away the cutting edge... and the flipper I use to open the knife (where I won't scare anyone, if people are around, I open slowly with the spyder-hole...) I have cut myself while closing knives a lot more than I have ever cut myself when opening knives... so the 'round hole' is a great way to close a sharp knife safely (imo)

I should've used the term "functionally redundant" instead of "functionally useless". The hole is useful to open the folder without scaring people. The hole area doesn't give you much room for the thumb but you can use partial thumb. For closing a liner/frame lock folder I keep things the same across all manufacturers since I switch around knives quite a bit. I disengage the lock with thumb and while keeping my thumb there I fold the blade in with my index finger until it hits my thumb. Then, I just rotate my thumb up and over to the spine and close it.

Steel130 you said this Benchmade is a reverse tanto. The shape looks a lot like Kershaw's Funxion series. But Kershaw describes this as a drop point. Are they basically the same thing? Just wondering...I love reading everyone's responses in this thread.

Discussing the Spyderhole in this forum is like bringing up assisted opening in the Spyderco fourm. :p

I just didn't understand the problem. My custom AWT that the Spydie Southard is modeled after offers the flipper and thumbstuds. I've always enjoyed having the option to open quickly with the flipper or slowly with the thumbstuds. I just don't find the two options redundant. I never found the hole to be ugly. Personal preferences and all.
