The Ugly Stick

dawsonbob...
When it goes into production, ya might wanna ease up on the tolerance. The millionth of an inch might bump production costs. :D

Well, it will pain me deeply, but I think we can ease up a little... just a little, mind you.:D

The program I was working in at that time spit it out to six decimal places, and I just copied and pasted. In reality, I really do try to keep production values in mind.

Engineers are so much fun.

I only play one on TV... I really can't perform brain surgery.

When I got out of school (several aeons ago), I decided that there was too much kalkelatin' to that stuff, and it made my little dense brain hurt (my little dense brain is pictured in my avatar. I had it out for cleaning that day).

I found out that people would pay me to write silly stuff and make pictures, which I thought was a heck of a lot more fun, and it paid fairly well, so I've spent the last thirty years or so in the advertising business.

I kept my hand in though, designing the odd thing here and there. Now I'm back to having some fun designing solid thingamabobs again. The wheel turns.

Nowadays I don't even have to pick up a slip stick (yes, I'm that old): computers are cool.

Are you sure that tolerances in the millionths will raise the cost?

it's all about marketing.
"This knife was manufactured to have an overall length of exactly 13.75062 inches,
perfect for the tasks you will face in the field."

Of course the down side is the additional labor required to measure each completed blade and have a special printing for each spec sheet!

Drat. I knew there was a catch to this stuff.:D

Maybe we could just say "Over thirteen and a half inches." and let it go at that. Think anyone will notice?

I think its a cool design, might be a little too much but overall I think it is a cool tool.

good work!

Me likes and wants the pretty.

Update???

Milton

Hi, Milton, and welcome to the Becker forum. Obviously, you've been investigating older threads, as all new Beckerheads should.

As far as an update? Well, there really isn't one, at the moment. I've moved on to other projects for the time being, while we're awaiting word from Ethan and Toooj on something else.

If they asked me to refine it for production, I'd be all over it . . . but they haven't, yet. Maybe it's too ugly, or it just doesn't fit in with current plans for the Becker line.

I was also working on a cool little combo knife (without sink or can opener) and sheath system for the Ugly Stick, but that's on hold now, too.

If Ethan and KA-BAR ever want further development, I'll certainly go ahead (I'd like one of these myself).

ah, truer words. if only people went back ALL THE WAY TO THE BEGINNING :)

mmm, maybe i'll have to get KaBar to do a contest. there will be a scavenger hunt based on old posts and content/lore. mmm.

read the old stuff! heck. i still do that. sifting fodder to find nugget to put into the FAQ/etc...

Not only would people learn a lot by going through the old threads, it's entertaining, too.

I still read the older stuff from time to time, too: there's are some real gems buried in older threads.

I think we do need some contests to liven the place up. They would be an advertising tax write-off for KA-BAR, and fun for the people here: a win-win thing. I mentioned that to Ethan in an email last week, but I never heard back from him (don't know if he even got it).

For those of you who haven't taken the time yet, please do read the FAQ's. Bladite has sifted through a whole lot of old threads, and put a lot of work into them: they really are informative.

that reminds me, i was hoping for more ... ZING from the last contest, and the results. will have to call up the Toooj and see what's up.

Last contest? We had a contest? Sheesh . . . why doesn't anyone ever tell me these things?

the naming contest for the Eskabar :) lasted nearly 2 months?

Bladite

Oh, yeah, I'd forgotten about that (hangs head in shame).

All I can say is I spent almost the entire day yesterday at the VA, and they put me on some new meds, so my head's kinda foggy this morning (as it often is).:D

When I see a knife with slot of stuff on it like that I think of the tracker and the $300 sitting in a sock drawer I am not a fan of overly complicated knives that need manual hence the reason I love my bk-2 and want a bk-7

But still it's a brilliant design

Without going into a lot of detail about it, let me just say that I'm not a fan of the Tracker myself.:D

This one does have features that are actually useful in the bush, but it's not really complicated at all. You don't need a manual or a training DVD to operate it — it's just a strong, straightforward knife that will do the things you need to do. I did put a lot of thought into it, and i included what I think are useful features, but I didn't put in any gee-whiz gimmicks: I don't believe in those.

I design knives based on experience that I actually have in the outdoors, and some feedback from others who do the same, and I really do try to come up with things that make sense.

So this wouldn't be a $300 paperweight or sock separator. It would be something to make your life easier in the bush. It would be a Becker, after all: tough, useful, and at a good price point . . . along the lines of a BK-2 or BK-7 with a few added features.:D

Thanks for the kudos, and I hope that you get a chance to try it at some point.;)

Maybe its just me. but I do understand, necessity is the mother of invention

Its just I am a little dense! so in my vid on YouTube of the bk2 I describe it as idiot proof which is why I like it. It does one thing and it does it real good
