The Ultimate tactical Hawk...?

I don't think anyone's mentioned K5 Tactical. That guy made getting one a seriously miserable experience...but if it finally did come it was one serious dispenser of pain and destruction.

It seems your going for entry type hawks, that benchmade seems buit for prying. Bieng a contractor I would have to give the nod to the bechmade with its build in prybar. That bieng said 38oz is a heluv alought of weight to practicaly lug around.

Honestly I have difrent hawks for urban and outdoors. i use a graham ram for urban stuff, (basicaly prying, breaking through vehicles homes, hitting with a hammer etc...) I use the 2hawks war beast for outdoors, im not to worried about breaking the handle outside. Thats just what i do, because it seems imposible to get a lightweight entry/prybar tool in solid steel. However the fiberglass or composite handled tools, I havent broken one yet, compared to at least five wood handled tools in last couple of years. Composite tools are a good compromise.

PS: If any of these tools just feel cool, just ignore all my pragmatic pradle and buy that one.

This is my next purchase, I figured in a real urban meltdown a fiberglass handle firemans axe would really help tear through homes, cars. etc... Im going to duracoat the head and wrap it in parcord

Or I might go with the all metal pry axe

AND if you are 3' tall.

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha... NOT!!! :thumbdn:

I only have hawks for 2 reasons:

1) Throwing

2) Hand-to-hand combat

I already said I like the VTAC best for hand-to-hand...
For throwing, I like the pre-2010 Cold Steel Frontier Hawk, like this one I customized...

Not to whiz in any cheerie oats, but tactical is kind of an oxymoron word. any thing will break, you just ain't trying (Red Green).

Thanks to all for post such nice stuff. for if you go back in time an cap and ball rifle loaded and fired and loaded fast than a flint lock. I think steel headed tomahawks show up in North America with the Europeans, 1600, 1700's, that was tactical. why, sharpened, tempered cut sliced better than a stone head, lighter weight.

someone posted if you pick it up and it feels good buy, this is a good idea, kinda like trying on shoes, find something that make you say wow.

Chances are over time someone will make or design something new and improved.

most of my hatchets, hawks and axes have wood handles, except Estwings and I have had them break to pulling nails/ demo work, tore a claw right off, think breaching tool and Murphy. Also lost heads off of fiberglass hammers too.
So if you find what you like and it feels good you have better moral and maybe good attitude is the best part of any weapon or tool.

Good luck with that ;) You'll have limited ability for blocking/parrying/hooking and virtually no reach.

With a long handle you can always choke up for a shorter length but if you have a short handle extra length won't magically appear when you need it.

Citizen , would that K5 at 5 lb be a lot lighter with a hawk haft eye for a wood or composite haft, and cost less, maybe some one should talk to it maker/builder.

I think my biggest problem is that I can't hold them or try them out. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places. With guns, at least I have a few places to handle them in person, but where would I hold a Busse or k5 hawk? You pretty much have to buy one to ever even see it in person.

Who cares about what length so-and-so or who's-its-name prefers? It's preference. I very much doubt that many people on this forum have real hand to hand combat experience with 'hawks different styles and lengths.

Different attributes have different advantages/disadvantages. If that weren't true knives and axes would only come in one flavor. I like throwing, I like short handles. Who cares? Besides, reach is all well and good until someone gets inside it--at that point the issue is moot in my humble opinion.

CCF makes some great Hawks. I have 3 and they have been put through some hard chopping and throwing. Order what you want. Hand made to your liking.

Military Stryker units don't seem to have a problem with the VTAC's length... they had a problem (some did) with the sheath, hence the newer leather offering. Likewise, troops in the late '60's and early 70's in Vietnam didn't seem to have a problem with the Vietnam Tomahawk's dimensions, either. Do you have any documentation/pictures showing longer hawks being used in the military?

OK, me personally... I would only have the VTAC as my secondary weapon if I were hiking, my 6' hiking spear would be for reach and would be in my hands while hiking, it would be the primary weapon in this case. At home... the VTAC is mounted on the wall near my bed. But then... I have a 9mm and 12 guage just as close, so the VTAC is never my primary weapon.

.

Issued is as Issued dose. The choice of Government issue is limited at best and the Grunt on the ground has little or no say in what they get.

The Vtec may be perfect for the Strikers but what have the boots on the ground compared it to or is it just better/the best tool they are issued?

I got a VTEC and it is a good tool in its size and weight range but I like a more slicer edge and more length. Just my opinion. I have a M16a1 stock, M16a2 stock, Car collapsible and a M4 6 position. All mil speck all different, each an improvement(?) over the last.

When the current supply of issued VTACs need replaced or upgraded will they change any thing? Is the military supply chain/budget system the best way to chose a tool? I now lots of lifers who doubt they will ever get the right boots.
