The Ultimate tactical Hawk...?

How pointy should a tomahawk spike be? What should it penetrate? If you have to sneak up on somebody and do something mean, would you really choose to put a spike through their helmet? I always wondered how relevant that test was.

I figure a steel drum or the roof of a car is about as thick of a piece of metal that will ever need to be cut through in an emergency. It doesn't take much of a point to shear through mild steel.

Any other ideas of what a tomahawk spike would be useful for? I know I can't have thought of everything already.

New to the site, but I have been recently checking out the RMJ line. I like the full tang. The shrike seems like a nice piece, but there is a 3 month wait, and not to mention a $375 price point. The kydex sheath looks awesome though. I am probably going to get a less expensive SOG in the meantime, but will definitely be keeping my eye on the RMJ tactical tomahawk.

This Sayoc Winkler Hawk is a smaller version of the original, it’s the first one of its type made. it is a prototype, sold to me be Daniel Winkler himself. He makes de greatest fighting tomahawks in my opinion.:D

Hello edwood7, sorry kinda off topic but I was wondering if you could tell me what knife that is on your vest. Thanks

What did you have in mind for the handle material?G10? Micarta? Just askin'. Moose

Hey moose, sorry for not answering your question sooner I don't check this thread often. I'm planning on using black canvas micarta. As soon as I get a computer I will post some pix. But mind you it's my first hawk so it's pretty ugly lol.

They spike needs to be considered more of a back up to de blade, if you miss whit the edged side you fallow up whit the spike. I would never choose to go for a hit to de head if the target has a helmet on, id go for the neck. Having that strong spike , just in case I miss is good for a back hand strike whit the spiked end

As far as the 'usefulness' of the spike on a hawk vs. a helmet... I suppose it depends on the actual situation encountered. Suppose you need to be silent and the sentry has on a backpack or something else in the neck area that is in the way. And a hit to the neck may or may not be quick so as to avoid a scream from said sentry.

Even if the spike is never used for this purpose, though... it can be a tool that can do a lot of things the main blade cannot do or cannot do well. Examples might include boring a hole in something, puncturing something, prying, etc. The spike adds to what the hawk can do, just like a poll does but different. It helps the hawk serve multiple uses. It is up to the user to determine what they might want or need as far as what the hawk has or can do for them.

How easy is that to get to and use in that location? Does it tend to bounce around a lot? Does it become a hindrance while kneeling or crouching?

It docent move around if you attach sum paracord to the handel and lop it around your belt when your on the move, its not a hindrance at all. It is the shorter version of the sayoc.

When we stack out side of a door I always re lice the strap and have it ready for CQC.

Nice Hawk!
I saw this and it inspired me to get a tomahawk, just such a nice setup.
Specs? Handle length/material/weight? Who makes that head? Looks like a CS Trail Hawk head, but I'm not sure.
Thanks

MMHW makes nice hawk or axe. I like the one you picked. I personally like some of the stuff MMHW makes. I currently own one of their discontinued Kantana. I also have one of their discontinued hatchet or axe. It is about 26" long and weighs about 6 pound. It is built like a tank. It can go through almost anything. It big but it feels good in the hands. Their prices aren't that high compared to similar sellers. What really attracts me to their products is how well made they are.

JK Knives might have a contender with this one.[/QUOTE]

Hi Edwood -

That hawk will have canvas micarta handle scales with micarta liners.

I am hoping that the skeletenization will make the tool more balanced.

John is making these full-tang hawks for under the $250 mark with micarta handle scales.

For those with a vision, John will make your own design, or as in my case, he will help you polish up your own design.

best regards -
