The unofficial, non binding, carries no weight, 2020 forum knife possibility discussion thread

Sad to hear @skblades won't be getting cool SFO's until next year. Lots of really nice buck knives go through there.

I'm excited to hear of the possibility of a LionSteel or Viper though. Sounds really cool. Mark me down for 1, if not 2 or 3.

I cast my votes already, looking forward to see how it turns out on the 23rd. I've never owned a LionSteel or Viper, but I've had them on my radar for a long time.

I'm still holding out hope for acrylic scales this year. Over the years we have had a fair share of many covers, but acrylic isn't represented. I'm not a huge fan of acrylic, but think it fits the current germ reduction trend of 2020, and would be unique to CK regular line as I don't think acrylic has been used yet... plus will help keep cost down. Crossing my fingers for an acrylic swayback.

Maybe something in disposable face mask blue swirl :)

I don't want ANYTHING that reminds me of masks of any type thank you!

I like the blue swirls, but don't forget "Dumpster Fire Sparkle" acrylic.

It's an interesting choice. My first choice is ram's horn, because the variation in a natural material like that could balance out the modern construction of the knife.
But maybe it would make sense to lean into it, and go all the way with a man made material like acrylic.

By the way, we did had have an ivory acrylic (or was it white paper micarta? I'm not sure of the difference) back in 2013, but it was very uniform.

I kinda like the idea of a for lack of a better term "modern traditional" forum knife. Like it or not they are a segment of slipjoint knives, and some have strong styling cues to long established traditional patterns. There are a great many members here who enjoy such knives,as such in my opinion a "forum" knife should represent the forum as a whole. I also see knives such as those offered by Lionsteel, Viper and Fox as "crossover" traditionals. In that someone raised on moderns and used to their aesthetics would be more likely to give them a shot than a 100%traditional. Those same people may also end up here on the porch as many of us have found it, by Googling the knife in their pocket. Between finding the usefulness and simplicity of a slipjoint and finding the porch and becoming enthralled by the endless display of beautiful cutlery and history, they'll want to delve deeper into traditionals. And more people buying traditional knives across the board is a very good thing for our hobby imho. By having a "modern traditional" as a forum knife that person that finds their was here and sees that may just think "I'm welcome here,I won't be snobbed for a torx screw" as should be imo. They'll learn that a pocket clip and a thumbstud is one step to far over the line, and thats ok as well. The forum knife should represent the best of the porch. Maybe we can hook'em in with a knife with torx screws, then we'll get'm hooked on Keen Kutters and Challenge and Voos and Case and Schrade and....Vics....Laguiole.....and .....

The Blue Mask.....
I like that a lot....sounds like a 1940s cold war spy....trench coat...collar up...pork pie hat down over eyes as a wailing police siren races past the alcove ....the flashing blue light illuminates a column of cigarette smoke and in the murky darkness our heroes face is glimpsed hidden ...behind ...the blue mask....
The paper micarta congress 2013 is my least favourite although I do see its appeal....not a pattern I have much love for...
Personally I prefer colour and texture...such as Rams horn which we have never done...but The Blue Mask has lots of appeal.

Sorry r8shell r8shell ...been to too many dumpster fires....I like the look but I would smell it everytime:eek::)
No argument from me, just a joke on this "dumpster fire" of a year.

In the past I might have been resistant to the modern styling of this forum knife, but the sleek swayback does look good. I could imagine James Bond carrying a pocket knife like it.

Rams horn, or smooth white bone, or blue wave acrylic...

I definitely think a knife like Mike is offering, especially in wood or Kirinite will bring in folks from GKD. A lot of folks who don't fancy the traditional-traditionals, like these ones.

Face mask blue is pretty timely.

To me, blue and white would just represent the BF logo.

r8shell r8shell this years been more of a gas tanker a/l....or as we used to say plane into a crane into a drain big pain.
NOW onto more important matters....which James Bond ?
Connery?,Moore?,Surely not Lazenby?,Dalton?Naaah.
Brosnan?Craig?....or perhaps maybe Allen or Niven??
And are pocketknives gimmicky enough for 007? I can see Q using one (old Q not that smarmy new twit and deffo not Cleese...what was he thinking?).

Oh definitely Connery imho, more suave and elegant than into gimmicky stuff. Moores bond woulda been a Victorinox guy,Dalton a folder with a built in laser and flashlight, Bronson had brought some class back to the character, maybe an Italian stiletto, Craig would have some high zoot unobtanium modern that would slice through a elevator cable like it was paracord....
