The unofficial, non binding, carries no weight, 2020 forum knife possibility discussion thread

Well, this is the GEC Forum after all... C'mon, think outside the tube.
Well...apparently Kershaw is about to drop 3 new slippies this year:D There's a new thread going already, some are already cold on them but I'm not. Sure they're 99% chance they're made in China, but at least they're straight up slipjoints. No clips,no screws, pinned construction. A stockman, a trapper and a big single blade jackknife, of course they got their own names for them. I think I'm honestly going to try the big jackknife. But I seriously doubt they'll do a forum knife for us lol,:p but definitely outside of the tube:D:thumbsup:

Yeah, I'm betting they'll be Chinese. Interesting, though.

Lots of fixed blade makers out there. Benchmade makes a wonderful slipjoint. There's Lionsteel, Sheffield makers, Buck, Bluegrass. It's not a huge pool of potential makers, but all that whittles is not GEC. Some of the folks still making knives will undoubtedly be gone in the next decade, why not buy from them now?

Okay, that's silly talk. Gimmee another huge GEC with dark wood scales and thumbnail busting backsprings.

I believe we have had a Northwoods for a forum knife in the past.
Other than that, I know nothing and wouldn't expect them to, but we are just dreaming here.;)

The 2008 Forum Knife, a Small Stockman based on Queen Cutlery's No.26 frame WAS made by Northwoods but it was then under the previous ownership not KSF. Far as I know, Northwoods is a limited release brand in costly scales (still a GEC though;))and unlikely to want to do a big run. Be a Flipper's Acidtrip though;):D:eek:

Is the Banana flipable?

Tomahawk? Machete? Woodsmans Pal?

I was thinking about a knife from a company that doesn't have a ravenous following like Great Eastern, just to keep the value down. The value should be in what the knife represents, not a monetary one. I'm tired of seeing the wolves at our doorstep trying to make a quick profit on the hard work of others and the good will of the Porch members. The base principles of the Porch is that it doesn't matter what the knife is worth but that you find value in the other aspects of it.

How many knives were made in this past year's run? A couple hundred? Less? I honestly don't know..

Opinel has started making some "different" knives, handles, etc... a #8 drop point with bocote handle would be nice... or even a laminated "contrasty" kind of handle.

How 'bout Bluegrass?
Who makes those?

Does Opinel do custom orders? Even with fancy wood upgrades, we would stay in budget.:thumbsup:

I agree John, you stated it very well

One such company may be Grohmann Knives, a small family owned cutlery in Nova Scotia Canada.
I am very happy with my Slimline knife ( I bought in person at the factory on a recent trip).
Who knows, they may be able to do a custom order in carbon steel and different scales.

I know folks round here love GEC and the companies that make traditional knives of quality seems to be dwindling but as someone who like variety I hope we can go to someone else. I also prefer stainless blades which GEC seems to very rarely make.

Let's go with Opinel, I want to see someone try and sell one of those on the auction site for 499.99 + shipping. (Which happened with the 86 over the weekend btw. I also have a name btw) :D:D:D

Who makes those?

As far as I know Bluegrass is still making their knives in Manchester, Ohio. This stuff has changed so much and so rapidly over the past few years I may be completely off my rocker. :D

Opinel is an interesting idea...

My understanding (which may well be incorrect) is that they've always been contract knives. At times by Queen or Camillus. If they are currently made in the US, that would probably mean either Bear mfg. or Utica.

Of everything mentioned here, I'd like to see either a small fixed blade, or a muskrat pattern.

I have one Grohmann folder, and I'm very pleased with the quality of the build. I wonder if we have any porch members who might hold sway with them? THAT would be a different Forum knife...

edit: I just sent an email to them, asking if they would be interested in a project like that. I will keep you all posted when I get a response.

This is a quote from the 2019 forum knife info thread, so you may have missed it:
Until all 2019 purchases are accounted for, neither Gary nor I are going to even give a passing thought to any 2020 knife. There is a large amount of pre-work that must be accomplished back stage before any serious threads are started about any 2020 knife effort.

If you want to talk unofficially about various ideas, you can, but the ideas won't carry any special weight as to what gets offered this year. Please do not make this a repeat of last year's circus when random people started approaching various companies about making a BF Forum knife.

Yeah, thanks for pointing that out. I did keep it pretty generic, not mentioning the forum name.... just sort of putting out feelers to see if they would even entertain the idea. I will officially drop it, like the proverbial hot rock.
