I was digging through my junk drawer and found these old 86’s, and can’t help but think how nice a bocote version would look........

If that's what's in your "Junk Drawer" let me know the next time you have a yard sale would you?? I mean I live in Atlantic Canada but by the sounds of things it just might be worth the drive. :D

Most of the Woods touted quickly lose their striking colour or grain/ patterns and turn very dark so why bother ;) It'll all be blackish dark brown :D

Except if you opt for those 'foreign' types: Olive, Juniper, Curlybirch ;)

All adds up to Bone is Best for Barlow....

I agree with you that it should be olive wood. With that we can forget about silly bone covers.

Just for clarification...did this all take place in the “sea of glitter?”
Erm No probably not...but I have heard tell of that mythical sea...Men say tis a wondrous place that calls your soul back to the happy times of infancy ...Some say they have heard of an island....beyond the horizon...where the sand glitters like gold and the streams run with clear blue glittering water...where multi coloured glitterfish can be caught simply by asking them to jump in the boat...but be careful what you wish for !.
It is also said that on this glittering paradise No Knives are Needed and anyone who likes knives...even glittery ones...is sent to the glue works....and nevver seeen or heeaard of aggaiinn.

The problem with bone on a Barlow is that it's usually slab sided as an old B-24, and on a knife this size that's going to be uncomfortable to carry in a pocket. (I know 90% of you guys will never carry it anyways, but let's pretend you will.)

Micarta or acrylic scales can be contoured and rounded, which would not only make it easier to carry, but more comfortable to use. I think blue denim or olive green micarta would make this a great user (especially with red liners), but Dead Skunk acrylic (which GEC possesses) would make this stand out from the crowd.

One of these is a barlow and one of these is a barlow inspired knife

(I know plenty of barlows are rounded like that, so just bear with me here)

Bone can be rounded/contoured and has on many runs of Barlows. So can wood. Charlie told us no synthetics, which includes micarta and acrylic.

A chamfered slab sided bone can be easily contoured by the end user. The previous run of 86s was thicc, but this run doesn't have to be.

Pardon my naysaying but I don't think that rounded handles are going to make enough difference in pocket that a significant number of people will carry them who otherwise wouldn't. The size/weight of the frame isn't going to change, and that's what really makes these knives pocket anchors. But the popularity and frequency with which the previous double layer 86s were/are carried says to me that people are here for it. The ones not carrying the forum knife are probably not carrying it because it's the forum knife and it doesn't matter what the forum knife is they're not going to carry it and just collect it.

I think carry comfort is subjective really, I mean I regularly carry large slab sided knives. Daddy barlows, GEC 23's and other jumbo trappers even two blade folding hunters in my right front pocket. Although many people wouldn't like to carry a 5 inch traditional in the bottom of their pocket. I think if the proposed forum knife has beveled edges it will be comfortable to most. But it shouldn't be too difficult to round off squarish slabs if someone wanted to. I've done it on a few knives for better comfort while using them.:)
