The upcoming, anticipated, way-too-excited GEC 85's Thread!

All of mine were quite sharp right from the tube. I think my bloodwood has a little blip midway along the edge, but nothing big.

My two came in last night.

Love this side:

I got a bit more character than I was anticipating on the other side. There's a big crack down at one end. At least it's not radiating from the adjacent pin, but it's hard to tell where it begins...:o

This is only my second stag handled knives, so I don't really know what to think.

I would see what a shout to GEC yields.
While it doesn't radiate out from a pin, it does seem sizeable.

Shoot them a PM with some photos. Try experimenting with lighting to see if you can highlight it any further.

Congrats on the choices though. Nice looking pieces.

Stag with deep valleys have lines that run under them many times. Notice it is not the only one and it runs right in the deepest valley. That was in the stag when it fell of the deer's head; and I supplied it to GEC. So don't waste your time calling them; just send that dude back here if it is not to your satisfaction. No problems...

I had a 77 Barlow that had the same thing with cracks from the deep valley and one on the pin too where the crack shows all the way through. Mike offered the same deal to me and I am glad I didn't take it because its an awesome knife and is still in wonderful condition.

I wouldn't worry much about the crack at all. Its character!

Yeah I think you would be hard pressed to find stag with more character than the one you have

If it were up to me I wouldn't send it back. If the "crack" is dark tinted like the one's in your photo it's good to go. If you can run your finger over it and feel it, and is light in color, I would send it back. I have a crack in mine at the pin but it's dark and I can't feel it so it's good.

On a side note, I've seen your knife before. It was posted in the GEC production set of images. I recall it because it looked the best out of the 10 in the picture.

I want to see more stag pictures! 25,000 thread views and 5 or so people have posted stag pictures. Is there that many lurkers here?

Thanks Mike! Yeah, you can see from the amount of the potassium permanganate pigment (or whatever that is) wicking from the crack area that it was there before they applied the dye, and not something that started at the factory or in shipping.
Given that it's not in an impact zone and there's tons of material on either side, it strikes me as something that might not ever go anywhere, but like I said, I don't really know stag.

Mike is absolutely right, it is the nature of the material. I would be more than happy with that stag.

Uhhh, what if it's both? I can feel it with a nail but it's tinted.

Cool. Now I have to go digging...

Thanks. I mean, what's the worst that can happen? If it breaks then some day I get someone from here to put something new on the knife. :D

I can't exactly answer your question about feeling the crack and tinted. These are just my personal general rules of thumb. Maybe someone that's an expert on it can comment. Judging from what I can see on your picture I still wouldn't send it back - meaning it doesn't look like if it's something you can feel it's not a big step off from one side of the crack to the other.

I just checked - it's not the exact same knife.. very similar. While I was looking for your knife I noticed cracks in several of the one's in this picture. One of them has a crack at the pin (like mine). Like what most people here have said, it's normal. You could almost say it's abnormal not to have some type of small crack somewhere.

Got both mine on Monday...and I agree with previous post, it was the sharpest (both blades) GEC out of the tube I have received.

All these pics are killing me!

Pretty sure I'm going to be the last kid on the block to get his 85's.... today according to the USPS. :-(

Donutsrule I'd be very happy with that stag. But if you're not, I'll bet plenty of folks would be happy to trade with you. I would...
