The vanishing knife.

I enjoy feeling like a dangerous felon with my knives. It makes me feel powerful and evil. :devilish:

I agree that in general less people carry a knife these days (from what I've observed thus far in my life, I'm only in my late 20s). Personally, I do carry one every day and plan on keeping it that way. Even though I may not need it I'd rather have it than not have it and need it. To each their own though, if someone chooses not to carry a knife that is their choice and I won't think differently of them.

As people migrated to the cities and suburbs (from agricultural to industrial societies), they had less need for knives as a primary tool. Honestly, I don't NEED to carry a knife, but I want to. Primal instinct, I guess. Call me an ape man :)

Excellent reply. I find myself having to explain to some people why I carry a cutting tool. Seeing that I am outdoors and romping the countryside about 500% more than they ever will makes it a much more practical tool for me.

I always look at peoples pockets to try and see a pocket clip... Rare to ever actually see one in my experience.
I carry mine iwb often clip is less visible, but technically not concealed (which can cause problems with some cops in Canada.) I know a number of my friends also carry iwb.

On a different track, if someone asks to use my knife I always ask them where theirs is. I've had enough chipped blades and sliced fingers that I don't lend mine out any more. I'm happy to cut whatever it is hey need cutting myself.

Father: here son, I want you to have your grandfather's IPad...

"Except it doesn't work anymore cause its been outdated 83,254 times now."

My dads/grandfathers knives may be old and outdated but they still work as intended, they arnt the newest & greatest steel and handle material and from a big-name designer but they still cut the same as they did when they were new.

Nowadays I wear my fixed blade (usually 2) in a concealed pocket sheath or boot. People seem to "tweak" at the sight of openly carried fixed blades faster than folders.

At my sisters wedding, my cousin came over with a gift for his son, he needed some zip ties cut on it. He said he needed a watch, and joked around that he was sure I had one. My little brother had given him a knife, a SAK, as a present a couple years ago. I try to spread the Good Word, but to no avail.

I prefer to call it the 'pussification' of society. Throw in a hoard of 'metrosexuals' and you have the makings of a true disaster should things go south. Perhaps it should be mandatory that each young person watches a season of MacGyver. :)

You hit the nail on the head right there.

My Dad had a slim SAK that he carried, and he wasn't a "knife guy". I'm doing my best to pass it on to my kids as well.

There are less people carrying knives these days...so I carry three to make up for those who don't. :D

It's on Netflix. There is no excuse.

How very good of you!

Ok - So it seems you carry and actually use a knife you may be considered a little backwards or primitive; however, tools separates us from (most of) the other animals. How do they look when they are grappling with a package ferociously gnawing at it trying to open? There is hope though. Even though I am the only one in my office that carries or uses a pocket knife, I see PLENTY of pocket clips while out and about and even the occasional fixed blade be it an ESEE 3 or a custom in a nice leather sheath on a belt. Shoot, the other day a kid working a register at a store asked me which Spyderco I was carrying. He recognized the pocket clip.

When I am the RULER OF THE UNIVERSE ( add ominous echo ) everyone and I mean EVERYONE will have to carry a knife ! At all times! even when sleeping! there will be special pockets in everyone's PJ's. Don't even ask What if they sleep nude. You don't want to know. :p

I do like the stories of yesteryear. however, i will disagree that people are carrying knives less. not around here anyway. as you can see, i am from VT.

i admit that the folding utility knife has become popular. however, with that said, it seems like within the last few years, just about every 20-something-year-old has a knife clipped to their pocket.

now, i know that is not your grampa's slipjoint, but like i said, i am seeing more knives, not less. maybe it is a northeast thing.

Guilty.

Pacific northwest is the same. Lots of people with knives.

I agree with what most of younhave already pointed out. A knife is not such an essential tool for a 21st century city dweller, and most people can do without one just fine. Folks who need one on their job tend to have specialized knives that they don't take with them when they're off the clock.

We are a very particular group of individuals who appreciate a certain tool, in this case knives, for characteristics that usually go beyond pure usefulness. We just like them and pay more attention to them than other people do. Those disposable blade "Super Knife" gadgets just work really well, that's why they arenso popular. I'm sure most of us use the equivalent of a Super Knife in other areas of our life, and somewhere there's a forum with guys saying "I can't believe people carry those cheap plastic lighters" or somehting like that.

I happen to be fond of good fountain pens and good quality paper. It really makes a big difference to me when I write something or when I read a book. But this is just a pet peeve of mine, people seem to get along just fine with those disposable Bic biros and read just fine from cheap paperback edition.

In my country, Argentina, knives are THE basic tool for rural workers and they are also a status symbol. I remember saving money for months as a teenager to get my great-grandfather's blade rehandled by a well known silversmith because I just had to have a nice Sunday knife (both the handle and sheath are silver with gold inlays). In the countryside, men walk around with huge fixed blade knives and nobody looks at them twice. SAKs are popular with veterinarians, agricultural engineers, etc. When there's big celebration, competition or any event at which wine flows freely, there might be a box at the entrance to check your knife and pick it up when you leave.

In urban areas most guys from old families or with ties to our rural traditions will still bring a nice knife when invited to a barbecue, but very few carry one on a daily basis and ever fewer carry a good one.

When I was a kid we all carried knives. It's what we did. There were a million uses for a knife in the early 60's. I believe the decline in knife carry is directly related to the introduction of bike helmets and water wings.
