The "Whatever" Thread

Curious if anyone carries a first aid kit as an EDC item and/or if you have one when just out stomping the woods. I've been using one I have for cycling, but I'm starting to realize the needs are quite different, since 90% of cycling wounds are road rash. I could probably just pack anti-biotic ointment or vaseline and a ton of gauze and stretch net wrap and call it a day for a cycling first aid bag.

For hiking or camping, I'm less sure. As an EDC, even less sure. Beyond a couple bandaids and maybe something for burns, that's about all I can think of. Given, the EDC thing is a bit personal based on location, what you do everyday and all that, but just curious what some folks here do or have.

When hiking, camping and/or hunting I make sure that I have clotting gauze as well as trauma wound dressing with me. Thankfully I have not needed it yet.

I keep one in each vehicle and one in my pack. I also have a pocket size one for when we go on short hikes in the woods around home.

Are they pre-made kits or did you put them together? I'm trying to be lazy and just buy a few to throw around different places, but not sure what to look at beyond the standard stuff at an outfitter (adventure medkits brand) or a generic thing from Walmart. The generic things seem good for home at least, and I've dug into the pre-made adventure medkit branded thing a few times, but it's old and limited in scope now that I'm doing other things.

I think this is what started my looking into FAK's further, I don't have much for trauma in my medkits and I do more cutting and such when hiking/camping than with biking. I've been naive not thinking about a gash in a leg or some sevee cut while clearing trails. I've considered a turnoquet for when I'm out cutting with axes as well.

Pre made, but I usually add a few items. I’m also a bit strange since I carry a small sewing kit and eyeglass repair kit.

A turniquet is not a bad idea. I did not always carry these things with me but several years ago I was a few miles in the woods and it dawned on me that I would be in a really bad spot if I cut myself. Lots can happen (axe, knife, a broadhead) so I started carrying stuff that can at least help until a I can get to professional help. I bought a little first aid kit that I throw in the car and then have added items to it.

Thanks fellas, helpful info indeed and good to know I'm not off for thinking a pre-stocked kit wouldn't be a bad way to go, and then adding to it makes a lot of sense. My cycling kit went more like, "use some of this, replace with some of that" before I got it to where I like it. Getting it all small enough so I'll actually carry it is usually the tricky part with cycling as there's only so much you can stuff in a spandex uniform, and most space is food and water.

I think I'm leaning towards getting one of the pre-made trauma kits from adventure medkits or recon medical and I'll add that to, or carry it along with another kit or bag. And then do some basic kits to spread around in the vehicles.

JK Knives JK Knives my wife would love it if I included a suture kit as she always wanted to practice on me when she was in school and I was notorious for crashing my bike during training when I first started racing, and then again a couple years later when I got into mountain biking. I never did let her practice on me despite getting a few really nice cuts and punctures in the shin and ankle areas from the gears when going down.

I've never given anyone stitches but I have taped up wounds my wife sustained while hiking that probably should have had stitches. It happened twice, both times she slipped going uphill. One was a really bad wound from a sharp rock to her knee. It was 10 years ago, we were both unemployed without health insurance and it seemed a trip to the ER would have drained our meager bank account.

I've spent the last month reading preference for hunting and skinning knives and I ran across this picture from Mack Mack . Very cool.

Had a real cluster f$&k this morning. I was stamping an R on a blade, and didn’t hit it right. The stamp flew away, took 40 minutes of crawling around the shop floor with a flashlight to find it.

This is both nice to hear, because I know what the R is for, and I also feel your pain as I hate it when something like that happens to me. It's like when the one bolt you need to finish up a car repair falls into the engine cavity but doesn't make it to the floor.
