The Whittling Corner

Very cool! I like the variety of twisting and overlapping patterns. Is it hard to keep track of the pattern while you’re carving it? I could imagine myself trying for a basket weave and ending up with a physical impossibility. ;)
I know what you mean. I just can't get that ball in cage to work! :p

Serious answer: I can scribe the design on the yellow paint of the pencil first. That is if I'm trying to do a basket weave. The twisty coils I just make up as I go along.

Every so often I get the itch to whittle a chain. It’s best to scratch such itches, I think. ;)

A bit more cleanup to go, but it’s nearly there.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend and that whittling is on the agenda for some. :)

Just bought some whittling wood from a new craft store in town, havent decided what to whittle yet though. I will be whittling it with my Rough Rider 4 blade congress knife. I like having 4 blades to use.

I guess the big one. Mine is the yellowhorse 4 blade model. It has faux turquoise covers on it. Its got 2 sheepsfoot blades, a pen and a coping blade. I like it. The blades are thin, so I dont use it for heavy cutting to get wood down to size. I use it for detail work.

Mine does nice job. It's slim congress same blade layout

I carved my first wood spirit today. I’ve been wanting to try my hand at one of these for awhile now. This is on a hiking stick I’m making for my wife. The stick was a maple sapling that grew up in my shrub bed last year, so I cut it down and cured it under the house. All work was done with my Boker Congress Carver and 220 grit sandpaper. I think he looks kinda surprised. The wife says she thinks he’s saying, “HEYYYY GIRRRRRL!!!”

Nice work Trout Hound Trout Hound ! It’s good to have you posting here again.

Very cool that it’s a stick you harvested yourself. Maybe his look says “you woke me from my nap under the house to help you climb THAT hill?!?” ;)

What’s next for you?

Here’s the finished product, after some Danish oil and paste wax. The wife took him along on the Twin Pinnacles trail in Grayson Highlands, VA this weekend, and he did a great job on some steep, rocky sections to reach the highest point in the park, above 5,000 ft. She says he’s a keeper.
