I took up whittling between Thanksgiving and Christmas last year. That led to a keen interest in traditional folding knives and that, in turn, led me here to the Traditionals Forum. I truly appreciate what a special corner of the internet The Porch is and I've very much enjoyed my interactions with the fine folks here. I'd like to give a little something back to show my thanks.

I've seen several people here express an interest in trying out whittling. They and others may be wondering how to start. If you are like me and tend to over-think things, it can be a bit overwhelming. What knife should I use? How do I get it sharp enough? Can I use any old stick? It's an easy one-way ticket to the land of analysis paralysis.

I'm here to help. Announcing the Whittling Starter Kit Give Away:

H1rPbee.jpg

- Schrade 34OT: modified, sharpened, and ready to whittle
- Two-sided strop and (not pictured) green compound: to keep those blades whittlin' sharp
- Whittling and Woodcarving by E. J. Tangerman: rescued from the used book store and craving your attention
- Carving glove: because I only want you to be cutting wood
- Basswood: one 1.5" x 1.5" x 12" and two 1" x 1" x 12" is plenty to get you started

The knife is a USA-made Schrade Middleman Stockman with 1095 carbon steel blades. It has a few blemishes on the blades, but, hey, that's instant character right there. I've set it up like the one I carry most days and use as my primary whittling knife. Here's a closer look, but please don't scrutinize the edges too much, I haven't finished sharpening them:

There are, no doubt, better whittling knives, strops, books, gloves, and wood to be had. That's kind of the point: I want to give you everything you need to get started, but leave some of the fun of discovering what works best for you. And, when you find something that works better for you, please do let me know. Maybe it'll work better for me, too. :)

Note: the glove shown above is mine. I'll purchase a new one for the winner once I know the required size.

Rules
- To be eligible you must have posted at least 10 times to the Traditionals forum prior to the announcement of this GAW.
- You must be at least 18 years old and legally able to receive and own the knife and other items in the kit.
- I'll ship anywhere in the world, but please only enter if you are reasonably certain that the package will reach you. I'd hate to have it confiscated by a customs official because of the knife, non-native wood, or some other reason.
- Entries are accepted until Noon Pacific time (that's 19:00 Zulu) on Sunday, July 10.
- I'll track the entries on a spreadsheet and use a random number generator to determine the winner.

To Enter
Whittling has become one of my favorite ways to relax. To enter, please post "I am in", or something to that effect, and tell us all about one of your favorite ways to relax.

Feel free to comment and discuss. I'll count your first "I am in" post as your entry.

Nice sir, 'I'm in'

I've always loved whittling sticks into piles of very small sticks, but lack the technique to really turn it into something, I've carved or tried to carve, some wood spirits and came out roughly ok, but nothing to brag upon for sure.

Thanks for this chance and the glove is a nice touch ;)

I am in! One of my favorite ways to relax is to make a cup of loose leaf tea, set out my hammock, and pull up a good book.

I'm in!! Thanks for the chance to have a knife modded by you -- and the great accessories. Thanks for offering a great giveaway!

For relaxing, I enjoy spending time with my family. Wife, kids, extended family members--I just can't ever seem to get enough time to do the things we want to do together!

I'm in! Relaxing to me is a ride on my '98 Harley on a cool fall day.

I'm in.

One of my favorite ways to relax is a good video game or a nice cigar on the back porch.

Thanks for the chance!

A very cool GAW! Please count me in.

My favorite way to relax is to head for some uncrowded two-lane pavement on my motorcycle. Some of the best therapy ever.

My favorite way to relax, is a slow walk through the woods anywhere around here!

I'm in! Thanks for the opportunity! Two things that help me relax, sitting by the fire pit with a cold one or enjoying the of outdoors!

Great GAW, please count me in. One of my favorite ways to relax is at the end of a hard day's work is a nice La Unica Cigar on my deck:thumbup:

I'm defiantly in.
one of my favorite ways to relax is shooting my airguns in my backyard ( my favorite is my 1979 Sheridan blue streak ) I also love fishing, but it's not something I can just do whenever.
More recently I've started to try my hand at whittling, but need a more appropriate knife for the job ( a book would definitely help as well )
I already own a 34OT, but it's an ' 04 that came with a bent and limp sheepsfoot blade.
I feel like it would work very well for me, but sadly it isn't good enough to use.

Very cool GAW sir, thank you. I like to relax here. I read, whittle, whatever. Sometimes I'm alone and sometimes with my son. Often, friends will stop by and we'll talk through life, pray together, what have you. This kit would be great for my boy. He'd get a kick out of not having to use dad's stuff.

I'm in! Thank you!

My best way to relax is also carving, or sharpening. I like to sit down, listen to music (Brant Bjork, The Violent Femmes, or The Black Angels are my favorites for hanging out) and go through the motions of carving out a spoon, or fox, or something else that interests me. That, or stropping my belt knife into a razors edge.

Definitely interested in the tools of the whittlin' trade. I have the knives, sure, but not the knowledge to even know what materials or supplies to start with. I am in, as they say, on one.

One of my favorite ways to kill what little free time I have is going to the shooting range. We've got a county park out west with outdoor ranges and skeet fields, and I am a member of a nice air conditioned indoor range complete with "tactical" specialty lanes (very handy for practicing holster draws, multiple target acquisitions, hostile vs. friendly drills, etc.). That air conditioning comes in handy on days like, well, every day of the last month when it didn't rain all day long. :D I've been spending even more time at the range since I picked up a Sig P220. That weapon is delightful for perforating paper with precision.

Thanks for the GAW, WhittlinAway! Good luck to all the entrants!

How much does ammo cost you ? I pay 15$ for a tin of 500 .20cal pellets ( all of my .177's like the standard 3$ crosman pellets ) I would love to get a firearm, but in general there has been a lot of people switching to airguns for target practice and plinking due to cost, convenience, and privacy.
I currently just don't have the real need for a firearm right now, but I still want to hopefully Find a vintage single shot .22 for dirt cheap and restore it. ( I prefer old neglected things that aren't fancy but get the job done )

What a great giveaway, really nicely thought out Greg :) Not an entry please, I wouldn't want you to have to post all that over here, but just want to say thanks, and to wish everyone good luck

I'm in!

I'm in the car at the moment, heading home after a week at my family's summer house. While there we've been using the sauna and been fishing all week. For me, that's plenty relaxing.

Thanks for a cool giveaway.

Thoughtful GAW! Not an entry, because my own Tangerman hasn't made a whittler of me and I don't think another copy would help, great book though it is.

I'm in!

These days, my best way to relax is a good pinch of snuff and whetstones...

My grandfather was a wood worker and whittler and made some truly awesome stuff. Sadly he passed away a year and a half back. I need to get some good pictures of all the little trinkets at his house one of these days
