The Whittling Starter Kit GAW—Winner chosen! See post #56

I'm in! I've tried whittling, nothing very involved though. I'd love to check out the whittling book.

I play guitar to relax. It sort of takes my mind to another place. (Not sure exactly where lol!)

Don't need the tools and such, so not in, but definitely a great giveaway!

I tend to chill out with a good book or Netflix a season or two of a favorite show. Lately, though, with the kids home from school, we do a lot of movie watching.

Every once in a while, when I can get away, I'll have a cigar and a beer at the local cigar shop which has a great smoking room.

In a couple weeks, I have a whole 10 days to look forward to of outdoor relaxation and not a thing to do, but stay hydrated.

Great give away. I'm in!

I love whittling, but am very much a novice.

I really should spend my evenings whittling to relax. But with the hubbub of life I usually just relax with a little tv before bed. My favorite way to relax is to sit on the porch with a cup of coffee. Which happens far too infrequently.

Thanks for the give away.

Jim

I'm in. I'm terrible at whittling, and I've always wanted to be good at it, better never really knew where to start.

As for what I like to do to relax, I tend to sit down and play some jimi for a few hours.

I'm in. Thanks! I've whittled very few items. I did a pime wood derby car for my son two years ago? I occasionally whittle them simple swords. The dog has recently eaten two of those!

For relaxing, I like to read a good book. Canoeing in nice cool weather. Sharpening a knife seems to relax me.

I enjoy putting knife to wood but I've never carved anything more useful than a weenie roaster or fuzz stick. So count me in. For relaxing I enjoy a round of disc golf, a nice book or a good hike.

Thanks for the opportunity Whittlin'. I told myself I'd finally give whittlin' a go when this summer arrived, good timing.

I find improvising on my bass relaxing. Also when the seasons allow, poking around in a canoe, fishing, or simply sitting and looking over the calm lake.
I also find it relaxing hangin' here on the porch.:)

I am in! I am not into whittling (yet), but it is something I find interesting. I would like to count myself in the ranks of whittlers eventually. For relaxing, I enjoy several things. Spear throwing, knife throwing, shooting, archery, krav maga, or civil war reenacting.

Better give the knife to this guy, WhittlinAway, else you might end up in some serious trouble! ;) :D

I'm in, very cool GAW. My daughter and I go camping, we fish in the morning and evening, and enjoy whittling in the down time. Good bonding times.

Sharpening relaxes me

Yeah im in this is a great idea! I've been kicking around the idea of trying to learn to whittle for a little while now .
My favorite way to relax is to walk down to sit by the Saint John River that Runs through the center of the town I live in Fredericton New Brunswick. It's very cool how you can sit and enjoy all the natural beauty of the river going by and the odd fish jumping and of course the boats too. The fact that I can do all that in the middle of a city is pretty cool I think. Not to mention it would be a great place to start to learn to whittle :D thanks for the opportunity it's a very generous GAW

Ever heard of tab benoit ?
The way he plays his old '72 thin line telecaster is just awesome.

Greg,

Good on you, sir, for providing this give-away to encourage newcomers to take part in the joy of whittling!

Not an entry; my dad taught me back in the 1960s and I've been whittlin' ever since. 😊

Jeff

I'm in. Thanks for the chance at a great GAW. I love spending time with my Son's..huntin, fishin and shootin:)

Thank you to all who entered and shared descriptions, and sometimes pictures, of your favorite ways to relax. I read each entry with pleasure and enjoyed seeing the variety activities that my Porchmates enjoy.

I also appreciate the kind words from the folks who chose not to enter the drawing but took time nonetheless to offer their support and encouragement for the endeavor. Thank you for that.

And now, for the part you've been waiting for... I put the post number of each entry into a text file on my computer and used random.org to pick the line number of the winning entry. The lucky winner was post #29:

Great giveaway, WhittlinAway! This time of year, my favorite way to relax is sitting out on the edge of the pool with my feet in the water, drinking a beer, maybe smoking a cigar. I think I do that more than I actually swim in the pool.

Congratulations, Barrett! I'll be contacting you shortly to get your glove size and mailing address. I hope that these items give you hours of pleasure, as similar ones have given to me. Just try not to get too many wood shavings in the pool. :)

To those who didn't win, I hope you'll still give whittling a try. I've found it to be a potent antidote to the hectic pace that all too often accompanies modern life. And, when you do, please share what you're working on in one of the Porch's whittling threads. Regardless of your skill level, you'll find an enthusiastic, supportive audience.

Congratulations Barrett! And thanks again for the chance Greg!

The discussion on whittling lately has gotten me back into it and I ended up purchasing a glove and dedicating a GEC large stockman to the task. I was planning on gifting this to a buddy if I won...

With that said, I'd love to have tutorial on modifying a stockman for better whittling usage. Right now I almost exclusively use the spey blade. I've done a few animals for my daughters recently and right now am building calluses in a block of cocobolo getting a ball in a cage roughed out. I did cheat and hogged out the majority of the material with a drill but all the real work will be done with a knife.

Congrats, Barrett! Can't wait to see pics of your whittlin' projects. Excellent GAW, Greg!

CONGRATS BARRETT!!! I look forward to seeing your whittling projects as well:cool::thumbup:
