The Whittling Starter Kit GAW—Winner chosen! See post #56

I am in! I have put some whittling related items into my amazon cart a few times, but never committed to the purchase.

When I want to relax, I enjoy playing whatever video game has my attention recently, or getting out my 1:10 scale RC 4x4 and going for a trail drive.

Thanks

How much does ammo cost you ? I pay 15$ for a tin of 500 .20cal pellets ( all of my .177's like the standard 3$ crosman pellets ) I would love to get a firearm, but in general there has been a lot of people switching to airguns for target practice and plinking due to cost, convenience, and privacy.
I currently just don't have the real need for a firearm right now, but I still want to hopefully Find a vintage single shot .22 for dirt cheap and restore it. ( I prefer old neglected things that aren't fancy but get the job done )

I left you a visitor message.

I'm definitely in! I've been amazed at the creations in the whittlin with your EDC thread. Thank you for the generosity and oppertunity. I enjoy brewing beer to relax. Brew day is always fun but I enjoy building a recipe and the science behind it just as much as the actual process. I always end up giving away far more then I drink which is rewarding in its own way

Not an entry (don't qualify anyway). I just wanted say thanks for the motivation. I previously read one of the whittling threads here and I've been planning on start carving for a while now. I have an old Buck Stockman (as well as a couple other small Bucks) and bought some basswood blocks a few months ago. I just needed a little motivation to get started. So after seeing this thread I bought the book you're giving away to read on my tablet to get a little instruction. I'm hopeful it has some good info and simple projects to get me started.

So thanks again for the reminder and I think your GAW is a great idea! Good luck to all the participants!

Greg, I think this is a monumental GAW!:cool:

Not an entry from me, since I already have a bunch of basswood, a Kevlar glove (and a couple of thumb guards), some Flexcut gold and a strop, and my school library has a copy of Tangerman that apparently I'm the only one who checks out :D. All I'm really missing is a knife "tuned up" for whittling. But with your encouragement, I've been using a file to mod the blade on an Opinel (drop point to spearpoint), and that's giving me the confidence that I can actually thin out some blades to make a "custom whittler"! (Still need to practice some on old beaters though, to make sure my confidence isn't misplaced; might as well see if I can't use the file to sharpen the lawnmower blade too, while I'm at it! :o)

Good luck to everyone who enters!;)

(Oh, by the way, for relaxation, I like reading trashy suspense and detective novels (e.g., stuff by John Sandford and Stephen Hunter) or even just singing old rock and roll, hymns, and gospel while doing the laundry in the basement on Saturdays )

I'm in, drinking a couple beers and hanging out at the pool is my current way to relax. I also find sharpening my carry knife to be very relaxing. I wonder what the subdivision pool would think about me drinking and sharpening knives at the pool?

I'm in and thanks!

I like to relax by doing yard work mowing etc. I know some hate it but it relaxes me.

:)

Great giveaway, WhittlinAway! This time of year, my favorite way to relax is sitting out on the edge of the pool with my feet in the water, drinking a beer, maybe smoking a cigar. I think I do that more than I actually swim in the pool.

Greg -- No surprise here, I'm in. As you know, I've wanted to start learning to whittle for a while now. And I have your private message saved to my desktop for when the waters are right to dive in.

I blame my other addiction, reading comic books, for getting in the way. :)

Thanks again for the information you've provided me, and for sharing your new passion to one lucky individual here on the porch.

Not an entry, as I already own a nice stash of whittling books (including the one in this gaw), as well as multiple knives; just wanted to say I think it's a great idea for a giveaway. Whittling is a great thing that needs to make a comeback, in my opinion.

Great idea, and very timely for the lazy days of summer! Any free time is spent doing something outside with the kids. I'm in!

A splendid idea, but not an entry. My Grandson received his first knife last summer, a SAK, together with a booklet about carving (in French, he just learned to read). I'm gonna make my first steps and help him carving during this summer.

I'm in, I love this stuff.l My favorite way to relax is rehanging old axes and hatchets.

I am in!

I would love to start whittling! It's something I watched my grandfather do quite often.

To relax I like to sneak out early in the mornings and drop a line in our local lake. Whether or not I catch a fish is bedside the point - I just love the tranquility and peacefulness of the water.

Thank you for the chance!

I'm in, thanks for the generous gesture!. Cool thread! Here is a pipe I carved and tooled by hand a long while back.

Man what a GAW! I am in for sure. I have been thinking about whittling a lot lately. My favorite pastime for relaxation is playing my guitars.
