The Wonderous Whittler

The pull is strong but nothing like some of the older CASE stockman's I have, that usually snap my thumbnail off. That Ebony is a real beauty!
Knife arrived today - I was pleasantly surprised at the pull! Despite riding on such a large steel spring, the main blade comes out the first 1/3 of the way at maybe a 6, and from there you just pinch it into open, where it stays real tight under those two backsprings. Secondary blades feel excellent, can't wait to whittle with this one. I was on the fence about this model, but I figured it would be easy to re-sell...Now I don't think I will!

My first whittler: the Böker beer barrel whittler.

Does it smell of beer? That would be awesome if it did.
I guess it'll have to soak in a glass of stale beer for a few nights to get the smell right [emoji6] It seems to smell like old wood but that could be my imagination misinterpreting the smell of oil ...

Well, they do say that the handles are made from genuine German ale/beer barrels. :)

Good looking knife, zolthar! Ive got a buddy who has a trapper from that Böker Beer Barrel series, and I've been thinking about picking one up myself. That whittler is mighty tempting. :D

Thanks btb01! I don't think you'll be disappointed if you decide to buy one [emoji4]

MTURBO, the genuine beer barrel scales were one of the reasons (next to the looks, nice thin blades etc.) I bought one [emoji41]

Böker Whittler is a big favourite of mine, been looking for a Washboard Bone one for ages.

It's a good sized, versatile pattern with a lot of appeal.

Thanks, Will

So I started looking for one of these Böker Beer Barrel knives online (still undecided on which pattern I like best, but I know I want one), but I noticed something. All of the ones I see for sale seem to have a very different blade etch in the stock photos than what's on your knife and others I've seen before.

I don't like that nearly as much as that sort of dark etch that takes up the whole face of the blade. Anyone know the difference in the two? Is one a previous version and one newer? I'd appreciate any insight.

Hmm are they stainless or carbon like mine?

They look a bit like my stainless Böker which is made with parts from China (also a nice knife):

Does the shield say "Solingen" or "Germany"? To my understanding the ones with Solingen are entirely made in Germany wheras the Germany ones are made in Germany with parts from China (correct me if I'm wrong)

If you want I can send you an email with the supplier where I bought mine.

Thanks! I have a Stockman in this Apaloossa Bone too from Böker, the handles vary a lot but they're nice thick bone and the shield is a gasser too:cool:

I think the etches vary according to year. The newer Bökers have the larger etch pattern.

Here's a recent Copperhead. My Whittlers & Stockman (gave one away) had the etch shown in the AGR photo, all are carbon all are German.
