The Wonderous Whittler

The GEC Maverick is actually a stockman pattern on a congress frame. A rather unique pattern that never really took off, which I think is a bit of a shame as it's a very elegant utilitarian pocket knife. This congress frame was used initially to make the Courthouse Whittler with a traditional wharncliffe main on two springs and pen and coping on individual ones using the modern version of split spring design. - it's not the best image of the springs but it's the only one I have of mine...

Paul
I too wonder why we don't see more of these beauties. That is a gorgeous one and I hope to see more of it, Paul!

Another whittler that I got sometimes ago, this time Right'n Roosters lockback whittler. This is a grail pattern for me, but purchasing one of those incredible Case-Bose colab LB whittles is too expensive. I found this one reasonably priced, measure 3 7/8" closed, a tad larger than I am used to but it has slim profile which make it comfortable to carry in front pocket. The stag as in most German knives is premium, this is limited production to 500 knives.

Looks like a grail to me, Mike! I will keep an eye out...Thanks for the look:thumbup::thumbup:

Some great knives posted here, the whittler is a wonderous pattern indeed. I've carried this Rough Rider model for the first time this week and I've got to say it does everything I need it to do. It's sharp, robust, handsome and U.K. legal. Okay it has a couple of minor flaws; a couple of gaps between the springs and the main blade could snap open with a bit more authority, but for what must be the cheapest whittler on the market I've got to say I'm more than happy with it. Here's a few photos for you to compare to the many higher end models on the thread or to simply ogle for what it is....in my opinion a decent knife.

Will, that half whittler is awesome! I don't think I've seen that one before. Love that wharncliffe! What pattern # is that?

Most kind of you Barrett!

Not been able to get on the forum much this week due to technical issues... sorry for late response, but fortunately you already got the answer. I can warmly recommend the pattern.

Thanks, Will

At 4 3/4 inches closed, it is a large whittler for sure, but deceivingly slim, and actually pockets quite well. Bill Howard and crew really fit the blades tightly without rub, and the walk & talk is superb (just a wee bit tight as a new knife should be!) in this traditional split spring.

I'm lovin' mine!

Barry I'm lovin' yours! Wonderful photo by the way. I have an American Whittler in Snakewood incoming. I'll post some photos when I get it. Lloyd

Here's mine... someone else, Mike I think, I don't recall exactly, posted a #98 with an accent streak.. I think we got bookend snakewood grain because mine also has the streak.. I like it!

I just grabbed a fantastic looking Robeson Half-Whit on the exchange.
Waiting on my mailman...

Snagged the last #98 whittler in Gabon Ebony from KSF. I'm a little worried about the pull weight as I have fairly weak fingers, but I just couldn't resist. It'll be my first whittler pattern, first wood covered GEC, and adds a nice clip point to my collection. The mailman can't come soon enough!

The pull is strong but nothing like some of the older CASE stockman's I have, that usually snap my thumbnail off. That Ebony is a real beauty!

Split back Whittler collection. Several I just recently picked up at the Oregon OKCA show. Left to right top to bottom: American Whittler (GEC), Delrin Schrade Walden 804, Early Schrade Walden 804, GEC 38, EC Simmons Keen Kutter, EC Simmons Keen Kutter, Cattaraugus, NYKC HammerBrand and Schrade Cut
