The Wonderous Whittler

Almost to nice to carry (no matter how thick the sheath), but who doesn't like a bit of pocket jewelry from time to time.

I'm glad to see your post. I have one from the regular run. Anyone know who made these for KA-BAR?

This is my grandfather's Craftsman (Schrade) whittler. The blade is marked "carpenter" but it looks like the pic of your whittler right down to the tapered back springs.

WOW, those are some fine looking knives there Paul, especially the red. Which model is the red one?

I search the large auction site every now and then for nice old red bone of various models that doesn't cost a fortune but those are hard to find.

Sweet pair of whittlers, Paul!

Thanks Josh and Kevin. Josh the frame is an #83. The red bone is a #6383 & stag is a#5383.

I don't own a whittler (yet) but this is pretty much my ideal selection of blades, and I'm not even a whittler! I like small secondary blades for precision cutting, which sometimes requires the smooth-gliding belly of a pen blade, and other times the fine point control of a sheepsfoot/coping/wharncliffe. Unlike a stockman, which has three similarly sized blades, with a whittler you get one full size and two small blades.

For me, it's the same idea as a two blade jack (my favorite EDC), having two drastically different blades for drastically different purposes, but better, since you get BOTH styles of secondaries, one straight edged and one curved.

Long story short, I want to subscribe to this thread as a spectator. It's not in my budget to go and buy a GEC right now (I want carbon and a long/skinny style knife) but I'll be keeping my eye on this pattern.

I got this Remington split spring whittler at a flea market this past summer for 10 dollars. It has an old scale repair with primitive tar epoxy. Pretty cool knife, not sure what to do about the repair.

This came the other day, Winchester Black Box. When the blades are shut it has a nice slim presence, the blade selection is just right and overall just a very appealing 3 blade pocket-knife. I rest my case.
