There's been a lot of talk within the knife community about a changing of the guard regarding knife manufacturers, and I think that we're seeing this now with the success WE Knife/Civivi is having along with Kizer. I mean, it wasn't that long ago that these manufacturers were not even in the conversation. Clearly, that is not the case now, and I don't think it's hyperbole to put WE Knife/Civivi up there with the big boys now, such as Spyderco, Benchmade, Buck and Cold Steel. So, the question really is why is this happening? Well, there are several reasons for this phenomenon, and two (2) of the most significant reasons are attention to detail/quality control and cost.

We all know that inflation is the elephant in the room that nobody wants to talk about, but who wants to spend hundreds of dollars on an American made knife, when they can get a Chinese manufactured knife, with better quality control, tight tolerances, fit and finish, etc., than you can with the top U.S. knife manufacturers. Look, I'm all for buy American, but I'm not spending twice as much money on an American made knife that costs twice as much as a Civivi knife that is better than the American product. This whole thing is crazy, I know, but the reality of economics affects everything, even the knife community.

I'm bothered by this, but you cannot expect anything more than an honest appraisal of the product itself - people want value for their money. The only measure that really matters to the consumer is value for their money, and they're not getting it in America right now; and, if they can't get it here in the States, then they will be more than happy to purchase from China and other countries. I want to emphasize that the problem is twofold: cost and quality. Quite frankly, Civivi knives are winning in both areas. You can like it or lump it, but that's just the way it is.

Well, I'm going to buy the best knife for the money, and I don't care if it's made in America or Pluto.
That’s perfectly fine. If a knife was like a car, and I could only afford one, I’d buy the best knife for the money. But most people on this forum have multiple knives and at this point, don’t purchase a knife out of necessity. This is a hobby for myself and a lot of others. Some of my favorite knives have less than stellar fit and finish, and some are not so smooth when it comes to opening them, even though they’ve only left the box a few times.
Speaking for myself, I buy whatever catches my eye. I have seen knives online that I really like, but I am turned off once I see “CHINA”.

Censor me all you want, but that is not going to make this issue go away.
No censoring intended Sir. But, the tone of your OP is inflammatory. We will see how it turns out. You might try to initiate a discussion of opposing views instead of inviting argument. Just a thought.

Heck, the CRK gang alone is going to come after you with pitchforks.

Hey, that's completely reasonable - fair enough. I have no issue with this whatsoever.

There's this concept of you spend money with the folks you want to stick around. You help them, they're there to help you with what you want to buy in the future because they stayed in business. I could buy stuff at Walmart, but I'll spend a couple bucks more at the gun shop by my house, because if I don't, one day that gun shop won't be there.

Same thing here. I'll spend a few bucks more for a spyderco. Besides supporting American folks, I'm helping keep what I want to see on the market so I have options. IE I haven't looked but I'd be suprised if we/civivi were offering a whole lineup of knives in maxamet and other exotic steels.

I cant say I would never buy a we/civivi knife, who knows one day I might. But it won't be the first or second or third company I look at.

Well uh, it's perfectly all right with me, but I should tell you that I am a blunt man and I intend to speak very frankly here -- maybe -- more frankly than anyone in my position's ever spoke to anyone here before.

Just bought a Kershaw Livewire OTF.......so which side of the coin am I on in this discussion???

I don't consider anything made from stolen intellectual property to ever be a contender for the best or even an option for me personally no matter what materials, price or fit and finish may be.
Other than that I'm willing to buy from anywhere although being an American I prefer to support my fellows.

If that’s the case then what are you complaining about? I’ll spend twice as much for American made always. And your assessment on quality and qc is way off and by no means true. And finally this isn’t free market competition, this is the Chinese undercutting the American market so that one day all knives are made in China. Just like they’ve done in every other industry. You’re just playing right into their hands by buying them.

Good luck to you.

Who made you the arbiter? Sounds like you’re looking to stir things up.
