There's been a lot of talk within the knife community...

Chinese knives are like fat girls. Wouldn’t want anybody to see you with one, but they’ll git r dun in a pinch.

To me they feel like anything else China produces. Stamped out, mass produced, soulless tripe we buy out of necessity. Like a spatula from Walmart.

Well uh, it's perfectly all right with me, but I should tell you that I am a blunt man and I intend to speak very frankly here -- maybe -- more frankly than anyone in my position's ever spoke to anyone here before.
Now that's hilarious.

Hey y'all, listen up, this dude's here to tell us all the truth about Chinese knives! Ain't nobody heard the kind of truth bomb he's about to drop!

Here's a preview... some Chinese manufacturers are putting out quality stuff!

Thanks for the update, bro, nobody here's ever heard of Reate or WE before!

The only measure that really matters to the consumer is value for their money, and they're not getting it in America right now;
I understand the point you're making but I disagree. I have several Buck knives that I bought for under $50, and I find each of them to be well made and very effective. One of them is my favorite pocket knife. One is my favorite shop knife. One of them I don't like but I seem to use it every time hunting season comes along because it's so effective.

On the other hand, I have not managed to convince myself that a Spyderco, for example, would be a good purchase for me. And I don't know the economics of knife making well enough to know if MKC or Winkler or Schwarz are charging fair prices. But I do know a lot of businesses over the past 15 years that have popped up in America are charging too much, and I know that from my own business consulting. But in many/most of those cases, the overcharge is due in some cases to a lack of knowledge of how to run an efficient business, and in more cases they are selling a lifestyle as much as a product, even when the products are excellent.
I think that we're seeing this now with the success WE Knife/Civivi is having along with Kizer.
Well I have to admit ignorance of these brands. I don't think I have any Chinese blades, ever since I lost a Gerber I had picked up in the early nineties.

So although there is a question of principle for a lot of people - not wanting to buy anything non-USA, and another principle for some people not wanting to buy anything from China specifically, I think that what you may be seeing is that American manufacturing is moving away from consumer manufacturing and toward luxury/bespoke/lifestyle manufacturing, so the comparison is somewhat apples to oranges. Exceptions being the legacy operations like Buck, who again I think are still going strong.

So I see what you're saying, I just think there's more to it. And yeah, I'd love to see the Schrade factory rebuilt, and turning out affordable and excellent tools. But I sort of think the best way I can support that idea is to buy Buck and other US companies, to show other companies that it is possible to have a successful company turning out consumer goods that are made at home.

........ we Antipodeans have a name for this..... I have pondered using it.....repeatedly...... I am quite aware that Blues Blues is bored and needs more moderating to do..... so that kind of pushes me to articulate this, on the other hand my Manservant just arrived with my Fez, Smoking Jacket, Pipe and Brandy so I am going to take my leave and go regale the ladies with tales of hunting dangerous game on the Dark Continent ...... pip pip and jolly good show old chap.

You thank him for his service when he's telling us something frankly that nobody in his position has ever spoken to anyone here since at least two hours ago or whenever the last Made in China knives thread was!

I buy knives from all over. However I won’t own a ChiCom knife. If it was free I’d give it away to someone with no knife at all. See, while I have little choice where some items come from, I have 100% control over where my knife money goes. China can kiss my ass.

I don’t think I own a single chinese knife. Haven’t thought about it until now. Do they make any expensive ones?

Cuz I only like the expensive ones!
They most certainly do. I have a few, and they are very nice. The big appeal of high end Chinese knives, is that you can get something you could never reasonably afford if it were US made. I've seen knives in full timascus with mirror polished damasteel for around $600. I still prefer American, but some of the higher end Chinese stuff is just amazing.
