So while i was trying to sell and trade my knives, my one friend offered to buy all that i had, so i decided, yea sure, So i sold him everything i had (wasnt a whole ton) for 350$. Ill probably get something to EDC, something nice and cheap that clips to the pocket and just cuts what ill need, but i think im done collecting, iv had my experience with this hobby and it just isnt for me i dont think. I have yet to find a high end knife that cuts better then a cheap knife. For the amount i use a knife i could theoretically have a knife made of pot metal and it wouldn't rarely need sharpening.

This isnt a flame thread or anything, ill still be around on the forums i just felt like i would share this with someone. I will still carry something but im not sure what yet, something cheap with a pocket clip, ill come across it eventually, more so then anything else itll be something if i lose it it can be easily replaced, i have lost nicer stuff in the past, thats part of why i sold everything, i dont want to carry it and lose it and i didnt get enjoyment out of it sitting there so i decided to just let it go, maybe one day ill come back to collecting but for now lets just say im taking a break.

As long as getting that doesn't involve another horde of "Suggest a medium priced EDC"' threads!

Enjoy your break ChrisFarms. Look forward to hearing from you in the future! No sneaky coming back under another name in the meantime! :D

Congratulations Chrisfa. You have a handle on it.

Sometimes you hve to back away from something. Either you're too close to see the forest for the trees, or you've lost perspective of the thing. It sounds to me like you hav a handle on the perspective of it, and taking a course that's healthier for you. Sometimes an obsession can become the elephant in the room. I've had that happen to me, and I sold off almost everything. Nowadays I just keep my involvement a more shallow thing that I control, no be controlled by it.

I still love my knives, ans guns, but I now have a rule. I keep a certain number of them, but if one comes in, one has to go. One in-one out. This keeps it to a hard core of manageable items.

But you have to be happy collecting/accumulating. If you start to feel crowded or negative, then it's time to get out. You collect things because you enjoy them. But you've found the truth to the fact that a 300 dollar knife won't cut a piece of rope any better than a 10 dollar Opinel. The rope is still cut, and it doesn't know that was a cheap blade that severed it.

Good luck, Chrisfa.

Collecting isn't for everyone. I learned long ago that it's not for me. So I understand you.
Nobody better than you knows what works best for you.

thanks, ill still be around here on the forums to offer advice from what i learned and still gain knowledge from the others here who have alot to show (most of them know more then i do anyway i got alot to learn still)

my friends got a buck bantam bhw that he says i can have if i want, its orange, says i can have it cause i gave him a good deal on what i sold him. Might take it since i always liked bucks 420

That Bantam might cure you.
I was gifted a Bucklite 422 and it's my main edc.
Good luck broh.

I understand the desire to unload just about everything. If you have just one knife that does everything, I think you tend to appreciate it more and it becomes more meaningful. I've toyed with the idea of doing just that, though I don't think I will ever pull the trigger.

It's always good to take a step back from anything if you need it before you go obsessive. And all those screennames were getting a little nutty! What was there...like eight of them?

But...good on you...take a break. Practice those capital "I"s and apostrophes! Keep one knife you have and use it.

I like fine materials and fine finishes, but I'm not so much a collector as wanting one of the finest example representing each category. For example now I have a nice fixed blade, a nice lock blade, and a multitool. I'm pretty content but maybe one or two more and I think I'll be good.

Same with flashlights, one honkin thrower, one mid-sized thrower, one head lamp, and a couple pocket EDC's.

I'm with ya (Kinda) I'm not going to collect forever, I have about 5 very good knifes. I may buy one or two more and call my collection complete and just use the ones I got. I will be moving on to other purchases like a new Bow for archery and pistol (maybe a Kimber 1911).

.......but may still occasionally make a knife purchase ; )

Rock on Chris, it's good to take a break sometimes. I get a new knife maybe twice a year, even when averaging in past times where I was getting one about every month. As much as the manufacturers would love it if we all bought dozens a year, using and discussing use is being a knife lover to me.

When/if you go to buy a bunch more in the future, some time with just a basic, cheap knife or two will help you later.

I don't tell people that I am a collector because I don't think I'm very good at collecting, but I do have a lot of knives that I've "collected" over the past 30+ years and I still want to buy more. I have no money so it would be better if I could be satisfied with a cheap knife from the discount store but I can't. I might get away from knives occasionally although I always carry one, but I know that someday the passion will begin again and I'll be back.

The problem was that I jumped in head first before I had any idea on anything to do with the hobby. Then i screwed it up for myself by doing it, now I need to take a breather and a break. I do like knives, but until I can appreciate what makes the differences in quality I need to just back away.

You got me, I didn't keep track of it, or am I proud of it.

Your whole collection was worth $350 and you need to step back? How many knives was that, 2? 30? I hope closer to 2, as 30 knives totalling $350 IS a problem :)

What you should do is take that $350 and purchase a small sebenza. In that case you would actually be taking a step FORWARD.... a good step.

was like uhh , Ontario rat 1, buck vantage select, Kershaw oso sweet, 2 Enlan el 02's, 1 enlan el 01, Sog twitch 2, Spyderco Manix 2 translucent blue, Benchmade Griptilian opening hole, Kershaw JYD 2.2 composite, Cold steel large voyager clip point, Byrd hawkbill.

I'm going to take the money and sit it aside, I'm not gonna spend it, i wouldn't appreciate the sebenza I know I wouldn't. I just don't see why its worth 350$ so I know it wouldn't be the right choice for me right now.

It sounds like knives aren't the only thing you're disappointed about right now.

That's none of my business, but I agree that it sounds like you need some time and distance.

I hope you find what you're looking for.

Come back safe.
