think im going to quit collecting

Dude I know exactly how you feel. I've been buying knives for around 4 years. I could never bring myself to get above $80. I have found so many good quality cheap folders. In fact if you want a cheapy try to find a Timberline Kelly Worden folder. I paid $20 on knifecenter best sub $30 folder i've bought.

Being a Collector or Accumulator isn't for everyone. It takes time, space, and attention.

You don't have to spend a lot of money though, if the idea strikes you again in the future. I was just thinking how many brand new Opinel knives a person could buy for $350. You should see some of the Swiss Army Knife collections the guys have over in the Multi-Purpose Knives forum section! Or the collectors and users of Mora knives in the Wilderness forum section. The largest collection of mine is original USA-made Old Timer knives - don't cost much apiece, but they sure are popular among knife enthusiasts.

Take care, and see ya around.

I feel the same way I think I want to stop but I come back for more . My thing is I want to use them and carry them but the state I live in just not worth the risk NJ is not knife friendly . I got a Gayle Bradley and can't use a PM2 and don't feel like I can take it out my ZT 550 well you know . I have more that I just keep them In the safe and despite I keep looking for trade and some good sale why I don't know because I will never use them as intended . Let me get back to the exchange forum that Fallkiniven might be there.;)

Get yourself one good knife. You can get a great Spyderco or Benchmade for around $100 to $150. Use it. Enjoy it. You'll appreciate that one knife more in the long run than 20 cheaper knives.

Yea spending money on knives if you other finacial priorities is not good. However I think of the amount of money I have spent on knives is less than I have spent on guns and other hunting equipment so I can rationalize it to myself. I can't nap flint and knives are pretty much are essential for getting food from the hoof, wing or paw to the table. I have no need for most of my knives like big fixed blades that are not practical for anything I need to do but I like to keep those too. just in case a solar storm knocks out the electric grid and knives would be real hard to produce, my inventory would be good trade items for other hard to get necessities. I have to adjust my foil hat now. Enjoy your knife collecting sobatical

I'm in a similar place. I've tried out about every manufacturer for folders (Hinderer, Strider, George, Reeve, etc) that I want to try and now I'm basically into selling the ones I don't care for.

Sounds like youre making a good choice for yourself. Ive never considered myself a collector, I never really have more than a dozen knives, and I try to only keep what I use. Right now I have two folders that I dont use much, but they were gifts and they are sentimental so I love to keep them nice and pretty. I have five main users, four folders (two for work and two for outside of work) and a fixed blade. Id like to own a ton of knives, but I have a family so I cant spend money like crazy, and I love the knives I have. It took me a while to actually find the right knives for me, but now that I have I love using them and dont feel the need to buy others. Now I just focus on taking care of what I have.

Well I hope you enjoy whatever knife you end up with. Good Luck!

Get an OLFA. Disposable blades are awesome, you get to smash the tip as much as you like and sharpen with power tools like a madman...

(Yikes, I really did go off the deep end.)

The problem was that I jumped in head first before I had any idea on anything to do with the hobby. Then i screwed it up for myself by doing it, now I need to take a breather and a break. I do like knives, but until I can appreciate what makes the differences in quality I need to just back away.

You got me, I didn't keep track of it, or am I proud of it.

That's what most of us were trying to stop you from doing in the first place

You're not the 1st to mess things for yourself

Please forgive me my ignorance, but I didn't get the "theme" of you collection.
Did you also get some literature?
Did you get visit a show, of a seminar?
Have you handled some customs?
One of the most satisfying experience of knife-collecting is to talk with a maker at a show.
At shows you can look at, admire or even handle the most exciting knives, and you can share the experience with other people.
Maybe this would be a good starting point of a collection.

Collecting is like any other compulsive disorder, good for you.

LOL. The entire knife industry would die if not for collectors, accumulators, and folks who 'need' a drawer full of 'users'. Since even a mediocre knife can last a lifetime if properly cared for, imagine if a knife was only sold whenever someone truly needed one? :)

What you should do is take that $350 and purchase a small sebenza. In that case you would actually be taking a step FORWARD.... a good step.

Agreed.

I keep selling or trading off what I have and go through burn out periods. I like pricey knives but my income isn't best suited for it.

Maybe I should sell off what I have and just keep one good knife...

Of course i'll need a back up, probably a few in various sizes too, maybe one or two from other makers aswell..

Alright, I'm staying :D

Good luck. Did you at least keep the gift from the GF?

Yea the gifts i kept, my 110 from my family and the other various few gifts she gave me, there in my dresser right now, i couldnt feel right getting rid of gifts, i had multiples of a few things, like i had 3 rat 1s (one she got me 1 i got myself and 1 is for a friend but i didnt give it to him yet because he cant get it until after basic training) there was like 2 or 3 others, they will never part with me even if i dont carry them.

I had a see it collection, if i saw it and liked it i got it, i have played with customs and high end production like CRK and even a hinderer once, because i got friends (only 2) who buy expensive stuff (they are closet knife nuts though they wont join any forums or openly admit to anyone they spend 300+ on a knife) and any chance id get if they were willing id try out there nice blades, one blade that i cant get out my head is my friends yojimbo 2, it looks so cool.

Go with your heart. Forever my chopper was a Cold Steel LTC khukuri. At the time it was the best I could afford. The last few years, as my finances improved, I've bought a whole slew of big knives. It took a while, but I've figured out that my perfect big blade user is...drum role please...a beat up CS LTC khukuri:D

People can get caught up in the game, myself included. If someone just looked around here, they could easily conclude the US economy must be doing great. The reality is priorities can get out of whack pretty quickly. I'm a big Dave Ramsey fan. I wonder how many people here have over $1000 tied up in knives, but don't have $1000 in an emergency fund? I cringe when I see the "Something bad happened so I gotta sell these..." threads in the exchange. Most of the world uses cheap knives and they depend on them a lot more then we do. Take care amigo.

I just got a new spyderco native FRN and I like it so much that I'm selling off a lot of what I have.
