Thinking of buying a Boomslang..

if Joe Flowers sends me a Bloomslang, or flowers, i will allow this thread in the interest of corporate affiliation...

and i won't pubish (again) the dorky picture i have of him :D

heh

I am not scared of a reprofile. I've reprofiled 19 different blades in the last 3 days with my WKST.

I am wondering if i'm going to regret getting a BK9 now because i really did only want it as a chopper, and i have a feeling i'll end up using my BK7 and Boomslang together a lot more than the BK9

if you do not like your BK9, sell it. people will FLOCK to buy it. typically. people love Becker.

BK9 is one knife, those are two.

I got more.

Thanks.

I think the Boomslang will out chop it, but I think the BK9 has a better HT.

Joe Flowers designed it, and he so happens to be in my phone. I would like to see how the Dundee Bowie stacks up against the BK9 for chopping.

1085 vs 1095CV, and I have to dive the edge to the BK9 just for the Tooojfactor (real word, look it up).

Condor has been coming out with some spectacular designs, Joe's been busy, for damn sure, but if you know Joe, you know that grass don't grow under his feet. It gets trampled in a mad dash to make time.

That Dundee has me convinced, I want it. Do I think it will out perform the BK9, no, not really, but its fun and I have a few Condors already.

Do I think the Boomslang will outperform the BK9, maybe a little in chopping, but I think the BKT handle will win the ergos for small work.

This for sure, the Dundee Bowie has me interested. The way the handle starts off kind of straight, then curves back could make it really interesting for a large camp knife/chopper. I did however think that all of their blades were 1075, not 1085.

All the designs for the last couple of years have been Joe Flowers, a helluva guy, and an knife USER. Emphasis there for a reason. I live the designs, but, I have issues with the QC and soft steel sometimes. Soon, they will be a force to reckon with.

I just grabbed a Bushlore for the BK17 passaround (want a good set of comparison knives, so I grabbed a MK1 (to gift to a buddy after the test) and the Bushlore (to give my dad after the test)), and while I love the design of the knife, the Bushlore had a flubbed grind (got a bit of a recurve going on and the tip got dropped a bit as well). If/when they get those issues ironed out, things could get really interesting.

In regard to the Boomslang... I think it will be a great knife. But once again, the think I love about the BK9 is that it does quite well for small stuff, as well as being a capable chopper. And I still think the BKT handle is the best in the business.

But let us know how they compare. I loves me some good reviews :).

Could be, I'm not entirely sure, I know its one of the lower carbon steels, and with those percentages, really, without an electron microscope, its hard to tell.

Mine was a chisel out of the box, but after some time on the belt grinder it's a good chopper.

One thing I have noticed is a much smaller sweet spot than you would expect. Also an odd vibration when you miss it. Like it broke in your hand or something. Maybe mine is the only one like that, but it is noticeable for sure. The BK9 feels much more solid to me.

I plan on creating the swell in the handle by thinning it in 2 places.
Yes Moose, I had the same issue that you did when using it.
I also re profiled mine, and I did some other grinding as well as stripped the coating off, I will post pics after breakfast.
I found the heat treat on mine to be surprisingly good, the steel does feel a little softer to me than on my Becker knives however. Nothing drastic I just think it isn't hardened to the same rockwell. Having said that, Mine took a hellova edge and I chopped halfway through a pressure treated 6 by 6 in a chopping contest with it, my condor golok, my rifleman's hawk, and my Estwing hatchet, and it performed quite well. The surprise there was that the golok out performed every thing there, even though the edge seems really obtuse. I had reground it but it still seems like it shouldn't cut or chop well when you look at it, but it does. Now that I have my 9 I need to do a chop off with it. I have a feeling the full convex 9 that has already fed on my flesh ..lol might outchop the crap out of those others.

Trade, it looks like you and I did exactly the same things to the Boomslang ..lol even the spine looks the same, I almost asked you how you got a pic of my knife.
Mine rings like a bell if I miss the sweet spot, the first time it happened I thought I had snapped the blade.

I really get nervous buying outside of Ka-Bar/Becker. But a few of those Condors have me curious. Especially this new one, which is a little Boomslangish...

I enjoy mine, I have knives that I like more but Condor seems to be one of the only fixed blade companies that offer anything close to the value that Becker knives do.
They need a little polish to get to the Becker standard, but I agree with Moose, a few years and they will be a force to be reckoned with.
I have a Condor Golok, Toloza, and Boomslang, and I like all three.
Now I LOVE my 5 and my 9 and my 16, but like I said a few years and I think Condor will have a fat line up of lovable knives, and axes too.

That blade looks way too good to be mine....:D

I took the grind up over half an inch before I was satisfied with it. I thought it might be a little thin, but it's held up well through heavy chopping and batoning. No chips or rolls at all. My only gripe is that damn vibration. It's a harmonic thing with the length/thickness/1075 steel all playing some role. Odd.

I just cleaned it up on the work sharp to make it pretty for its pics, it was a little rough before the spa treat.
Yours does look like its been through more use than mine though. Something I hope to remedy soon, now that my little one is big enough to get out with me.

You did a MUCH better job on the re-profile/edge grind then I did too, I really need an actually belt grinder instead of just my work sharp.
I may solve that problem this weekend at the Harbor Freight, I will have to build a work bench ..then ..lol I have done all my knife work on the top of a card board box with a trash can for quenching and a can of wd 40 to keep things smooth.
The Dremel has jumped in a time or two as well, but its not exactly a pro set up.

that Condor Aztec Cleaver is very interesting...

no idea what I would do with it...but very cool-looking LOL

Hey ST, if you can put a little bit with it, skip the harbor freight one and get a craftman 2x42. Daylight and dark.

I have a boonslang en route courtesy of my lovely wife. Also own an origianl model bushlore, inca knife and 14" el salvador. I really dig Condor and Joe's designs. I guess my Esee lite machete is half condor also as blade is made by Imacasa.
