Thinking of buying a Boomslang..

Trade, thank you for the idea on the belt grinder, I will take your advice and go for the craftsman instead. Its a hellova lot easier for me to get to a sears anyway ..lol
You know my Golok does not do that pinging at all Trade but my Boomslang does. Not sure why but it was definitely nerve wracking the first few times because I kept checking to see if I had broken it or hit something metal or a rock.

I need to get myself a chopper someday. The biggest knife I own is a Kabar USMC. It can do some itty bitty chopping and fortunately doesn't weight all that much. However, a better tool may be necessary someday. I like the looks of the BK9, a Condor, or even these Mora machetes I have seen. The Moras are super light and priced well below the others but I am concerned with durability.

Regardless, I believe the Machax may be a great compromise between weight and chopping power. That little bugger coming in at under a pound looks like it packs a sweet wood splitting punch.

If you want a chopper & like the Boomslang-----stay tuned to Condor. Some AWESOME stuff coming out. Warlock Machete, Locknessmuk Knife, Pack Golock Knife, Engineer Bolo Machete, Dynasty Dadao Sword.

Already bought a boomslang. It's sitting on the coffee table right now. Wife signed for it, so it's waiting for me to get home for lunch

I've had one for a while and it is pretty great. Convexing the edge is a must and stripping it is harder than I thought it would be. The coating on mine was about twice as thick as I thought it would be. But since those mods were done it has been unstoppable. I don't have a 9 but I think for straight head to head chopping it would take a machax to beat it. I hope to find out soon. :D

by weight, it outchops the 9 but not by much. Gorgeous blade, tho...

well, i got it in the mail...

first impressions.

It's MUCH heavier than expected... this is one THICK blade

came dull as a butter knife. I'll be reprofiling it tonight, but it's certainly not usable out of the box

The sheath is awesome but man it's a TIGHT fit...

overall, LOVING IT so far

I batoned the CRAP out of mine a couple days ago and even with bending all over the place through wavy and knotted grain it came out straight as an arrow. I wouldn't be overly concerned about durability.

TOTALLY different animal than all the other choppers described in this thread though. I honestly can't think of anything to compare it to. Rather than being a big knife/machete hybrid it's more like a small knife/machete hybrid. It feels like you're holding a small knife in terms of the tasks you can perform with it and the way it moves in the hand. And yet it chops well! It's a very strange piece of work.

The Boomslang is a great buy for the money, but it does come with a stupidly thick edge at the moment, which is why I've been giving them the "Special Grade" treatment to correct it myself until Condor does. I've let them know about the issue.

i spent 20 minutes reprofiling my new one.... it's not QUITE shaving sharp but it' slices paper like a laser

MUCH better than the factory spoon sharp edge

I've seen them coming as obtuse as about an 80 degree inclusive. Like I said, I've made the problem known so more recent batches should, in theory, be better.

mine had a 30ish degree inclusive angle but it was dull as a spoon

i think they fixed the angle issue, but they need to learn to sharpen ;)

I wouldn't say that so much as they need to learn to increase the consistency of sharpening on that particular model. Every single Bushlore I've received lately has had a screaming sharp edge capable of dry shaving hair along most of its length. Same goes for Hudson Bay Knives, Rodans, El Salvadors, Eco Survivors...etc. The problem cases seem to be the Boomslang, Enep (both versions) and goloks. The latest goloks I got in, however, seemed to have the issue remedied and were of very recent manufacture (about a month after I mentioned the issue to Rick at Condor) so I take that as a sign that things are on the up.

Anyone have any thoughts on reshaping the handle?

it's a bit... round

i think i'd like to thin it out a bit on the sides

I have and use both. I like knives, especially choppers, but if I have to pick one.....it's the 9 all day long.

I just thinned the handle on my golok to make it more Beckerlike..lol it was a practice run for my Boomslang.
Wear a mask, Micarta doesnt play. I will be marking mine then belt sanding it to the marks to create the famous Becker swells, like the curves of a fine woman's body.

I like the name "Boomslang", it even sounds big.

The big choppers are appealing and the get a lot of attention. I considered it along with the BK9 but I have less need for chopping than fine cutting. Want but don't need one!

If they would make the Boomslang with the edge like the warlock it would be amazing.

Not sure what you mean there? The Warlock isn't out yet so no one has evaluative opinions of its edge. And if you mean blade then the Warlock already has the same handle as the Boomslang, so if the Boomslang had the same blade as the Warlock it would be...the Warlock. :p
