This BB13 went on a diet

Let us know how awesome it performs now! I was a bit underwhelmed with it vs. the Basic11. I think the thickness of the blade works against it- this grind looks like it would make the 13olo 13 into a powerhouse!

I should also point out that I'm not used to using a knife with such a large recurve, so I'm still learning where the sweet spot is. It's fun to practice though. :)

Thanks for the use pics!! It looks like fantastic blade, nice bites.

I definitely understand it still being behind the MOAB and Sasquatch, though I do wonder a little about what it could do if the thickness behind the edge had been cheated towards .03" vs. the .04"-.45" that Josh quoted. :D -I understand rationale for leaving it where it is though.

At any rate, $400-$450 is my current upper limit on price for any single user blade, so it's hard for me to see the BB13 being toppled as King Chopper for me anytime soon. I do intend to reprofile the edge to 15° in the near future to up the performance though. I'll probably want to thin it out too, but I'm still not sure exactly what I want to do regrind-wise.

I initially expected I'd want to go to a full height grind asap, but now that I've put some use in and gotten familiar with the heft and blade shape, I'm sort of with Dogboye and really pretty comfortable with it as-is. (Not to take anything away from yours though, it looks absolutely killer.) Time will tell I guess. Next thing for me will be to tune the edge bevel and keep wailing on it for a bit longer before I decide on the next step.

Since you mentioned the sweet spot, inasmuch as coating wear is an indicator, here is the pattern emerging on mine, right in line with what I expected:

Really interested to hear how the reground CG feels next to the 1311. It would also be really cool if someone at your meet-up brought a BG for comparison. Unfortunately even though I'm within a reasonable distance, it's probably not in the cards for me again due to conflicts.

I will have both the CG and BG at the GTG. Hope to have them stripped and edge reprofiled by then.

How much did that work cost at Razor's Edge? I have 3 CG BB13's and i may want the same FFG on one or all of them

You can contact Josh directly for a quote, it will depend on what exactly you want done.

Awesome! With your 2, plus the REK13 & 1311, all you guys would need for the ultimate Res C chop-off is a B11 and an 1111. Sounds like a blast either way.

Bringing stripped B11 and B9 with factory fresh asym edges.

So I'm curious --- now that this and possibly a few other REK13's have been out there and used --- what's the performance update?

I'm particularly curious to see if the chopping performance of the REK13 is greater than a BB13 in Battle Grade with a reprofiled edge.

Now if the BB13CG factory was stripped and the edge was reprofiled -- how much more UMPH would it have in raw chopping power compared to the REK13?

The REK performance is excellent. We had a chance to compare it to some other BB13's at my camping trip a month ago, including a CG BB13 with a reprofiled edge, and the REK version was the clear winner in terms of performance and balance. That's not to say the BB13 isn't a fine knife in stock form, or with a reprofiled edge, but the full flat re-grind makes it a different beast entirely.

I sent mine for a regrind as well. I opted for convexed edge, can't wait to get it in hand.

I wouldn't consider buying a b13... except this one! You did a great job. That's how they should roll out of the shop ☺

Wow that's pretty remarkable--- I'm shocked actually. Geometry is very important, but so is total weight and weight distribution. The fact that the 19 oz REK13 beat out the BB13 BG AND the BB13CG with reprofiled edge is pretty shocking. I applaud you guys for doing so much testing while having so much fun. I'm going to have to join one of these years!

Just finished this one up today (mainaman, heading your way monday!)... surprisingly enough it seemed to perform decent (good bite, blade heavy though) prior to the regrind (was already stripped down), but now it's really dialed in with lowered edge geometry and better balance. Due to the weight distribution on this thing you can really generate some heavy power swings. On this I put a polished convex edge *almost* blended in to the primary.

Josh --- excellent work man. I'll be texting you to inquire further and pick your brain.
