This is a bourbon thread...

I've always been partial to that "kickin' chicken" aka Wild Turkey. But I have strayed lately and gone over to the Irish Whiskey side. It has been Black Bush by Bushmills exclusively. It should be drunk by itself with NO additives! It is GOOD!:thumbup::D

Yeah I agree with you cutter17 Irish Whiskey is good stuff and I do partake it staight with ice cubes and maybe a splash of water nothing else. My favorite is Jamesson!

If you don't mind me asking guys what are the price ranges on some of these bottles (especially the older stuff)? Trying to figure a budget on acquiring some of these mentioned bottles. Thanks for any info.

The Elijah Craig12 runs $17.99 at the low end and the Pappy Van Winkle 20 runs $84.99 at the high end, everything else falls in between in my next of the woods, that I have tried.

Thanks H2OCutter! Knobb Creek is one of my favorites. I went and picked up a bottle of Gentlemen Jack by Jack Daniels twice charcoal filtered. I almost went with the single barrel but that was around 40 clams. The store owner suggested I try the Gentlemen Jack first then make the upgrade to single barrel. I asked if he had any Elijah Craig and he did not but he pulled out this order book looked it up and ordered 3 bottles. We got to talking about bourbons and he gave me one of his magazines which had a good article on bourbons. I thought that was real cool of him to do that, I mean with today's service not always the greatest. Anyhow the article mentioned that American bourbon's and makers have seen a 2.3% increase of last year with higer end premium small batch bourbons seeing an increase of 12.3%. It also said that today's demographics for bourbon drinking are male 25-39 year old range also stating that..."They enjoy the exploration and journey of finding new bourbons. They like to dig deeply".

Another interesting note is that Wild Turkey is coming out with a new bourbon based cordial called Wild Turkey American Honey. It stated that it is trying to appeal to the taste buds of women.

Forgot to mention my review of the Gentlemen Jack. I like it! This is smooth as silk. The smell has a slight brown sugary, ameretto tilt to it. It smells like some sort of cookie. At least for me anyway. Took a drink swashed it around the pallet and at first it has what would seem to be a bite but then mellows out quickly leaving some burn going down but quickly cooling and leaving a good mellow flavor, I'm guessing probably from the twice charcoal filtering. But it does not have too overpowering of a licorice flavor to it. Anyhow, my exploration will continue as I have found a new hobby. Usually I'm a beer drinker, ocassional wine drinker, but I really like the bourbons lately. Especially consumed in a gentlemen's way bourbon is tastey. I guess I've progressed from the shot swilling jack and coke phase. Cheers!

I've tried the good and the bad, and the very best reasonably-priced and available bourbon I've found is Jim Beam Black. Very respectable, most groceries here carry it, and doesn't hurt the pocketbook.

Correction, Wild Turkey Has come out with a honey cordial. it is tasty. Pritchards has also come out with a bourbon based triple sec called Sweet Lucy.

I bought myself a bottle of Knob Creek almost two years ago and it is still on my computer desk unopened. Got the idea to buy it after reading a thread on BladeForums. Maybe I'll get the nerve up on my birthday next week to give it a shot. Or should I say give myself a shot:D.

I have seen this, and it intrigues me.... anybody try it yet?

I purchased a bottle of Buffalo Trace at lunch today. Will try it out tonight and comment later on.

Hmmm, this buffalo trace isn't too bad. It turns out that the bottle I bought is a special barrel for prestige liquors. It was distilled Feb. 19, 1999 and bottled 11-21-07. It is from barrel no. 62

I drank some straight up and it would probably be pretty good with a splash of water. However, tonight it was two hot toddys (1.5-2.0oz bourbon, 3/4oz honey, 1/4oz lemon juice and 4oz boiling hot water) for the nasty chest cold I gots brewin'. Tastes MIGHTY FINE!

Geez Nimick, what a collection, I'm jealous! The Wild Turkey Honey Cordial struck my curiosity as well-I may pick up a bottle to try out. Friday is pay day and off to try some new bourbon, which one I don't know yet, but I will have to take a short drive to a bigger liqour store which stocks a broader range to choose from.

Question1: Does adding a splash of water or an ice cube inhance the flavor of bourbon or just some bourbons in general?

I ask because although I always try out my bourbon straight or neat, I usually end up adding 1 ice cube for my second or additional helpings. Sometimes I add a little water instead of an ice cube. I find I like 1 ice cube the best though.

Question2: What type of glass (if any) enhances the tasting experience? Does a shorter round or short octogan looking glass work best? I have also seen the smaller glasses which taper at the bottom and widen towards the top. This may sound absurd to some but I've notice slightly different tastes when I use a smaller glass as opposed to a larger glass. It may be that I can smell the bourbon more from a smaller glass.

Any imput would be helpful. Thanks!

In my uneducated palate... I think adding one cube or a dash of water somehow brings something out or mellows it just enough.

Glass? I just make sure it's clean.;)

Answer 1: IMO most bourbon should be drunk straight. There are a few that I enjoy with a little water, Noah's Mill is one. so it really depends on the bourbon. I highly recommend experimentation.

Answer 2: I find that a rocks glass works best. most whiskey I've tried sort of "open up" after they've been in the glass for a little while, as if they need to breathe some. as such, while it is possible to sip from a shot glass I generally find it to be a waste.

Nimick,
I have a question for you. I enjoy my bourbon on the rocks, just an ice cube or three at most. I notice that say, if I'm typing away at the computer or whatever, and my drink sits for a little bit, the whiskey becomes cloudy. It's not condensation on the glass, but actually the whiskey itself. This only happens when I use ice. I've seen it with several, including Booker's, Maker's, Bulleit, and Knob Creek. Any insight on why this is? The whiskey also seems a touch thicker after the clouding, but that could just be imagination.

Cheers,
Jon

Nimick-I have noticed the same regarding the bourbon breathing a little in a smaller or rocks glass.
Mongo-I agree if the glass is clean it will work!!
