This is a Cigar Thread

What are you guys using to humidify.

Most cigar nuts will recommend Climax beads which keep humidity at 70 because they suck or give off humidity depending on the surrounding humidity. They're pretty good, but they're a little picky about HOW you moisten the beads and I feel like they take up too much space in the box. I've used them a lot and a lot of different ways but have only moderately been impressed with them. I still got wide ranges of humidity variation and a lot of inconsistency. Sometimes the humid would get up to about 75-80 and my cigars would start to get a hard draw. Even mold.:(

The product I really like is the Glacier Ice gel stuff they sell on ebay and here:
http://cigarextras.com//index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=378
I tried it once and was so impressed that I bought several more for my other humidors. They say the little disk is only good for a 50-cigar box, but I've got one in two of my 100-ct boxes and it keeps them at a STABLE 63-65% which I'm perfectly happy with. Really low maintainance and you just dribble some distilled water on them and forget about them for about a month.

One more tip while I'm at it...
Buy your humidity guage in the reptile aisle at the petstore. They're cheaper and work the same.

BTW, I'm in Denver. It's dry here too.;)

Counterfeit Cubans are not as easy to spot as some may think. Most of the time when you are out of country, and you purchase a Cuban cigar you are in-fact buying a Cuban. Where most of the problem comes in is that due to the high brand recognition of Cohiba, Romeo y Julieta, Fonseca, etc..., there are several knock-off cigars that were made of tobacco grown in Cuba, but wrapped in knock-off bands. As previously stated in this thread the only place you know you are getting the real deal is a Casa De Habano. There have been "Cuban brand" counterfeits found in almost every International Airport's Duty-Free Stores and it is estimated that the fake Cuban business is a $100 million a year trade. With that many pesos at stake these guys are not just half-assing their efforts to produce counterfeit Cubans.

sure fakes could come from cuba or could come from belize for all i know, but they obviously arent a real romeo y julieta/etc, that much i can say for sure.

i am pretty sure the casa de habano in nuevo laredo has sold me fakes, so i am not sure buying from them is a 100% guarantee of authenticity, if the guy who runs the place isnt honest he might wanna make some of that $100 mil a yr off gringoturistas, and i am pretty sure (positive really) that some smaller cohibas i purchased from them were fake. why? mostly the cigars were poorly made, didnt burn well, and didnt taste right. but its certainly better to buy from C de H vs some guy on the street, on the street almost certainly ya are gonna get fakes.

agree some of the fakes are pretty good but as i said buy one and light it up, its usually not hard to tell from that point on imho, if they look real and taste real hey to me they are real.

imho 90% of the cuban cohibas in the US are fakes.

As far as the casa del habano in Nuevo Laredo, I am believe that they sold you fakes, it is not one of the real La Casa Del Habanos'. It is just a atore that happens to have the same name. This is where all of the true La Casa's are:

http://www.lacasadelhabano.cu/mundo_i.asp

If anyone any where is sold a fake Cuban ciagar from a true La Casa Del Habano franchise store and can prove it with something other than "the way it tastes" I will gladly send them $1000.

I smoke Italian Toscano cigars:

http://www.sigarotoscano.it/english.html

A Toscano smoking friend of mine once said: "You think you chose to smoke Toscanos, but you're wrong; it's the Toscanos that chose you ..." ;) Sounds kinda mystical, but maybe not far wrong. Anyway, once you get used to Toscanos, Cuban cigars feel like you're smoking air. :)

Here's cutting my cigar with a knife, first a shallow slit in the middle, then cut diagonally from each side.

I love Padron. I have some Cubans to smoke, too. No time or interest in maintaining them anymore...

I'm a low grade cigar smoker I guess. :D
I use scissors to cut em and a dagger switchblade to poke the hole in the end. Not that I wouldn't use the proper tools if I had em, just never been in a smoke shop that had any that I cared for. I'd like to pick up one of the Xicar cutters. I'd also like to get one of the hole punches that has two sizes in it. I think they're called bullet punches. Just haven't found them locally and I don't like ordering things like that.
I'm not into these high end smokes either! I won't go over a buck a pop. Right now I'm getting most of my cigars from Thompson Tobacco in south Florida. They have bundle offers and I get good cigars at a very good price.
My smoke or choice is the Arango Sportsman Maduro, but they're not always easy to get. They're Dominican made and the last time I ordered some the order was almost 2 months overdue.

I love Padron.

Too strong for me. I used to like really strong cigars, but not anymore. I like the more mild ones like Ashton, Montecristo, Vegas 5, etc.

Ya know...

They SAY you graduate to more mild cigars as you develop your palette and learn to appreciate more delicate, subtle flavors.;)

La Gloria Cubana (not Cuban, made in the USA and Dominican Republic) is a great value. The Wavells are great.

I have a friend who gives me one or two Opus X a month. Now that is a good friend.

I have been burned by "real" Cubans so often that I am not interested. I will say that a real Cuban Cohiba was the best cigar that I ever smoked, however.

I have had several fancy humidors, but my favorite is a new 70 oz. plastic cooler. I put a mixture of water and polypropylene glycol (get it at a pharmacy, across the counter) in an open container in one corner. This keeps the humidity at about the recommended 70%.

I also have about 50 pipes. Pipe smoking is more of an art. I believe that a good smoke only comes from a good pipe. If you are using a $20 pipe, forget it. Petersen pipes are probably one of the best values. I love Il Ceppo brand pipes. I have Dunhills and James Upshalls as well. The briar in a pipe can be just as much art as a knife handle.

For pipes or cigars, I prefer bourbon or red wine for an accompanying drink. Sweet drinks should be avoided.

Someone mentioned Swisher Sweets. They are glorified cigarettes.

Another few good ones:
Aurora 100 Anos
La Flor de Dominicana Ligergo L300/chisel tip double ligero

gryffyns are pretty good imho, IIRC thats how ya spell, maybe lol........

uh, let me look in my humidor....Griffin's

and 69* 64%....not bad for winter :D

+1 to fulloflead for mild cigars. Mild w/ an easy draw. Not only do i prefer the subtlties, but i'm such an occasional smoker heavier cigars give me headaches.

I have a question...

Is it better to have one BIG humidor or several SMALL ones?

I THOUGHT I had this all figured out. Observe:

I currently have 4 box humidors (3 100ct, 1 50ct. Read earlier post on this thread for details.).

One of the reasons being (besides the ones listed earlier in this thread)
is that I once had mold. If you HAVE mold, better to have only ONE humidor of cigars (potentially) destroyed (although I only lost 5 out of about 20) instead of a big humidor full of thousands of cigars.

It was also a really-easy thing to wipe out that 12 x 8 x 4 box (give or take) with bleach to kill all the unhatched mold spores (and I haven't had a problem with this humidor since) and solve the problem on a, relatively, small scale.

I figured, if I have several small, 50-100 ct. humidors, if anything goes wrong, I don't loose everything.

Good plan? Maybe. I'm not sure.

However, I've found caring-for and checking the stats on 4 humidors is a P.I.T.A. if you know what I mean. I feel like I'm ALWAYS having to fuss over at least one of them. I wonder if it might be nice to get a tall, 1000-5000 humidor so I, at least, only have to keep an eye on one place.

Maybe I'd keep the little 50-box by the front door and throw a handful in that once every two weeks instead of opening the big one every couple days.

Thoughts?

I keep 4 humidors going. Mild, Medium, Fuerte, and Maduros. It is a bit of a pain, but not any more than caring for knives.
Here in AZ, it is difficult to keep the temperature around 70, without drying things out, because of heat or air conditioning.

However, a good cigar is a real pleasure, IMO.

Anyone smoke cigarellos? (Tiny cigars)

I buy some cheap ones.

When I drink I want a little nicotine. Cigarettes have WAY too much - enough to get me re-addicted to cigarettes if I kept a pack of smokes around.

So, I keep some little cigarellos around to smoke when I'm drinking that provide a little nicotine but don't get me hooked on cigarettes again.

It works.

I've smoked cigars for quite some time. Any Padron and CAO Italias are my cup of tea lately. I got a box of Montesino robustos (made by fuente) cheap and they are very fine for mild cigars.

In the interest in keeping this thread going...

I got this from one of those "Scratch & dent - imperfect" sales at www.cheaphumidors.com for $125
but I can't find a scratch, nick or dent on or in it anywhere! I'm freakin' THRILLED!

Nice humidor!

I feel like such an idiot. I've been out of action because my colibri lighter ate it. Just grabbed a Xikar lighter because of the lifetime warranty. I was putting it back in the leather case. Somehow I ended up holding it upside down and pressing the ignition button. Gave my ring finger a momentary torching on the highest flame setting.:o
