OK...here it goes...

I'm normally a beer lover and a single malt scotch nut. Last week, I picked up a rum that has been recommended to me....the Angostura 1919.
Wow...is this thing smooth or what? It's like if a whole another dimension opened up before me...Rum!?!

After this vanilla/crême brulée delicacy, I'm craving for more...The questions are:
- Which rum should I try next?
- Is there a wide variety of flavours in rum as there is in scotch?

As if I needed another money black hole...

Here's a free knife pictures to boot:

You should definitely try Sailor Jerry's Spiced Rum. It's an over-proof rum with some great flavors that just blows Captain Morgan's away. Darker, smoother, stronger. Give it a try.

Cheers,
Jon

I read good thing on the Zaya Grand Reserve, El Dorado 15, Ron Zacapa 23 Anos...So many choices! But, hopefully, many years ahead...:D Thanks all for the suggestions; keep'em coming!

Murry McDavid has a bunch of "old cask" style double matured rums. the Caroni is excellent. Jim McEwan is a bloody spirit genius.

Annevarsario Pampero is good too.

Yea but how does it taste with diet coke:D

Funny comment Unsub :) but valid nonetheless...A LOT of people drink rum only with coke. Now, if someone really want to "cover" all the subtle flavours of a "sipping" (aged, agricole, premium, ...) rum with coke, it's their glass/money, not mine! To each is own...

Personnally, I'd use something like Havana Club Anejo Blanco or Palo Viejo for mixing. Mojito, Caipirihina, Daiquiri, the mighty Mai Tai...

i like rum and coke or mojitos occasionally, i have never liked straight rum though, i used to really like one brand which was made in haiti, cant recall the name now, it was supposed to be popular with witch doctors lol, probably the main reason i tried it.

matusalem is also good, & while i was in jamaica i tried a bunch of higher end rums, appleton was one IIRC, didnt like any of them straight though.

yep thats it, i like the logo lol, rums pretty darned good too.

FWIW i prefer the light vs the dark rums.

The Angostura 1919 is indeed a good bottle, i reccomend you try the 1824 and the 12yrs as well, now thats a good rum !!!
I personaly rate the Mount Gay extra old over the Angosturas but they are similar rums and the Mt Gay is more expensive.
Try and find the Pirates "pistol rum" as well, that is a good heady sweet vanilla rum but can be very hard to find.
For every day drinking the Mount Gay Eclips is a good buy as is the Appletons rums, and dare i say it, the good old Havana club 3 and 7, along with Sailor Jerry if you want something a bit spicey.

BUUUUUT,

For something really special the "sea wynd pot still rum" is of exceptional quality. If you really want a rum to beat ALL rums you need to look for "plantation rum" bottled by C. Ferrand, ARS-France. The Jamaican and Guyana bottles are some of the best rums i have ever had and i make pyrates look like light weights when it comes to drinking rum.

My rum collection almost rivals my knife collection :D

That's funny...I hadn't even read your post until just now...I mentioned Barbancourt only because I used to drink it...No other rum really compares...

Ron Zacapa Centario 23, a Guatemalan rum, is AMAZING straight up. Like a rum version of single malt scotch, corked bottle and all. If you get this rum near Coke, I will find you and kick your ass.

I also just got a bottle of Ron Matusalem Clasico as a present. Wonderful stuff over ice!

Like you, defaultuser, I was never much of a rum guy. But the good stuff is VERY good.

BTW, you have superb taste in knives. :)

Haze sounds like he's had one or two rums that weren't well drinks!

Here's a good site for rums. l

For mixed drinks I prefer the Mt. Gay over most anything else you can get at any decent bar.

We went on a cruise, and they had some stuff in the ship store called Rum Jumbie in a bottle in the shape of an islander, and it had a straw hat on the cap. The wife wanted it just for the bottle, but I liked the tropical flavor.

+1 on the Zaya. It's worth the search to find this stuff. It's my "special occasion" rum. I like Mount Gay Eclipse as my everyday rum, mixed or straight.
