This is a Rum Thread...

Try and find the Pirates "pistol rum" as well, that is a good heady sweet vanilla rum but can be very hard to find.

I will second the recommendation for the Pyrat "Pistol" Rum. I picked up a bottle recently here at a large, well-known store for $15. This rum has a great nose, is smooth as can be, and is very vanilla and floral flavored. Highly recommended for drinking straight!!!

FYI - Pyrat is a Patron brand (famous makers of GREAT Tequila)

The Angostura 1919 is indeed a good bottle, i reccomend you try the 1824 and the 12yrs as well, now thats a good rum !!!
I personaly rate the Mount Gay extra old over the Angosturas but they are similar rums and the Mt Gay is more expensive.

For every day drinking the Mount Gay Eclips is a good buy as is the Appletons rums, and dare i say it, the good old Havana club 3 and 7, along with Sailor Jerry if you want something a bit spicey.

BUUUUUT,

For something really special the "sea wynd pot still rum" is of exceptional quality. If you really want a rum to beat ALL rums you need to look for "plantation rum" bottled by C. Ferrand, ARS-France. The Jamaican and Guyana bottles are some of the best rums i have ever had and i make pyrates look like light weights when it comes to drinking rum.

My rum collection almost rivals my knife collection :D

Thanks for all the suggestions, Haze...I bought a bottle of Mount Gay (funny name...yeah, right ;) ) XO yesterday; one fifth of the bottle is gone already  I'm very grateful to you, but my liver and my wallet are not :D

This is really a fine liqueur...very subtle; compared to the Angostura 1919, which is quite on the vanilla side for me, the MGayXO is definitely more in the "coconut" aromas and flavours; there's a bigger alcohol bite, but nothing unpleasant. On my Rum journey so far, I find the Angostura 1919 more "user-friendly" - It's hard not to like that stuff - and the Mount Gay XO more subtle in flavours - more balanced?

I'm keeping your other suggestions!

Oh...and I snatched a picture, of course, with the obligatory knife (A Case stockman this time)...

Ron Zacapa Centario 23, a Guatemalan rum, is AMAZING straight up. Like a rum version of single malt scotch, corked bottle and all. If you get this rum near Coke, I will find you and kick your ass.

I also just got a bottle of Ron Matusalem Clasico as a present. Wonderful stuff over ice!

Like you, defaultuser, I was never much of a rum guy. But the good stuff is VERY good.

BTW, you have superb taste in knives. :)

..."Zacapa Centario 23, Guatemala"...10-4 mnblade. The hunt already started :D As for the knife comment: Thanks! Let's see some of yours!!! But you have to poor yourself a shot of rum...that's the rule from now on :)

When I lived in NYC it was not hard to find , nor was it prohibitively expensive. I prefered the 8 year old. A true "sippin" rum. Be warned though, it hits like a mack truck.

Yup, Mt Gay always get a chuckle when i metion it, it is actually one of the oldest rum stills still around so it should be respected regardles of its name :D

The Mt gay xo is defo. more about coconut than the 1919. they are both really good mid range rums and there is a good few others worth a look as well.
The Barbancourt rums mentioned are also good. i have one that smells like hot chocolate but is a bit milder flavoured than you might expect, its verry nice with a big chunk of ice !!!

Once you lift the lid on the world of rums its hard to get it back on, enjoy !!!

That's funny...I hadn't even read your post until just now...I mentioned Barbancourt only because I used to drink it...No other rum really compares...

a real conincidence huh lol, it is pretty good rum, one of my favs for sure.

I am a Rum drinker almost exclusively anymore, well I do have Bourbon occasionally. In all my years, I haven't had anything that compares to Cockspur 12.

i think i read it already, but check another for Havana Club. Its a bit hard to get in the states, but i've enjoyed it many a time in Mexico. (and was able to slip some back, shh).

havana club is good, i too got some in mexico and snuck it back a few yrs ago when customs wasnt checking everyone so close.

brought some back post 9-11 and they let me bring it in BUT they also told me "never again".

one big pro to havan club is the price, it was less than $10 US a bottle.

My brother left the mistake of leaving this with me, a bottle of Mount Gay Tri-centenial. Bottle #189 of only 3000.

That was a mistake  if you were my brother i dont know what i would do to you .... it would hurt any way :D

You guys and your fancy rums, I'll go broke trying to test them all. :)

But for the more plebeian among us who might like a little mixer now and then, try Captain Morgan (or any spiced rum I suppose) with cream soda. Sounds weird I know, but tastes great.

Captain Morgan is a staple in my household. Haven't tried it with cream soda, but will have to try it.

You should definitely try Sailor Jerry's Spiced Rum. It's an over-proof rum with some great flavors that just blows Captain Morgan's away. Darker, smoother, stronger. Give it a try.

Cheers,
Jon

Absolutely! I was never a Rum man until I tried Sailor's. Just great stuff. Strong, rich, thick and smooth...

Mixes well with many things as well; in fact, tastes like cream soda with 7-up :p

Under Gorby, when vodka was sold excluusively on ration cards, yet Cuban rum (Havana club!) was still in stores.
