This is a Rum Thread...

quite possibly the best value dark rum on the market at the moment.

I opened a bottle of Plantation rum from Trinidad, it was good, but not for what I paid.

I thought that Plantation was quite expensive, and not worth it.

Am VERY surprised no one mentioned Appleton Estate from Jamaica. All of the three bottlings are exceptional rum.

Best Regards,

OK guys...the next interesting bottle I've been able to find is an El Dorado 15...

From the moment you pour yourself a glass, you realize you're in a different league. Darker, thicker (syrupy; oily?), full-flavoured, but well balanced at the same time. The smell is perfumy (esters?), nothing I can relate to...maybe it's cane sugar/molasses! Hint of citruses as well. Now, I can sip this all night!!! And again in the morning after!

Just to keep up with the good habit, here's the picture, with a fixed blade this time around :)

Barbancourt seems to be no longer available in Canada:grumpy: One of my friend is goint to Dom. Republic after christmas; Hopefully, he'll be able to bring back a Matusalem bottle and/or Barbancourt...I'll sure keep you posted :D

I read good thing on the Zaya Grand Reserve, El Dorado 15, Ron Zacapa 23 Anos...So many choices! But, hopefully, many years ahead...:D Thanks all for the suggestions; keep'em coming!

The Zaya Grand Reserva is excellent, butter smooth and a real delight.

Hey H2OCutter; The Zaya is definitely on my list to try...What's this knife there besides the bottle...is it your "rum bottle opener"?

Thats my Scottish bottle opener, a Sgian Duhb I picked in Aberdeen, holds an edge and rests easy in the sock.

Next on my list is the Pyrat XO, heard good things about that one, you'll enjoy the Zaya.

Absolutely! I was never a Rum man until I tried Sailor's. Just great stuff. Strong, rich, thick and smooth...

Mixes well with many things as well; in fact, tastes like cream soda with 7-up :p

Absolutely, very good mix with different stuff. I like it very much just over ice, but I have also tried it with 7-up. I also like it with a bit of Pineapple juice. And with both the 7-up and the pineapple I'm talking about just a splash, not as much as you would use in a normal mixed drink. The rum has such great flavor on it's own that I don't like to completely cover it up. Also, check out the Sailor Jerry's website, they have some great recipes, bar tricks, and lots of great tattoo ideas in their gallery.

Got to try the Pyrat XO sooner than I thought.
What a surprise, at first taste I immediately thought of Drambuie the Scottish liquor, a wee bit thinner, but none the less Drambuie! Orange marmalade traces, the citrus is most pronounced, quite exordinary.
Not what I expexted in a rum. Next on the list is Mount Gay XO

Thanks H2OCutter!!! Pyrat is also on my list for sure! They used to have it here up north; it's no longer available, but that could very well change in a near future...I'll make sure I grab a bottle! Citrus you say? Could be a winner contestant in the Mai Tai...?

Nice classic knife! Sipping a 'ti punch right now, even if it's snowing outside :D...Gotta love this Havana Club Anejo Blanco :p

I'm planning to try their Extra 12yo pretty soon...I enjoyed their V/X in mix (mainly with coke...no, the drink) since I'm old enough to drink alcool (16yo, right? :)) Now, the 21yo seems to be hard to find around here :grumpy:

OK...while enjoying my 'ti punch, I snagged a group picture of the Rum I tasted so far:

Busse Steel Heart Prototype added for the group shot :D

For the ones interested, here's my 'ti punch recipe (changes everytime I mix; here's the current version):
- Juice of 1/4 lime (or lemon; I prefer lime)
- Splash of syrup (1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, boil, let cool) -> For a Canadian 'ti punch: use maple syrup!
- Rum to taste :D

Beware: extremely drinkable!

Have you noticed the Angostura 1919 took a big hit :D Might have to replace soon...

Good call on that one, H2O. I run a tavern, and got a bottle from a distributor a few years ago. I was as surprised as you were. Not what I expected from a rum either, but VERY good indeed. The cool thing was that there was a brass keychain sized metal plaque that came tied to the bottle with a picture of a large, buddha looking guy named Hoti (Hoe-tie) who is the patron saint of bartenders!! He still resides on my bar keys.

Cheers,
Jon

Picked that stuff up the other night. WOW! My Captain Morgan's might just get tossed out into the trash! Also tried the Sailor Jerry's too. Not as smooth, but better spices and flavors than Captain Morgan's as well.

This thread rocks!!

Jeepnut, I guess I should have worded my description a bit better. Morgan's may be a bit smoother, but I think that's partly because after drinking Jerry's the Captain seems more watered down. I was just trying to say that considering the extra boost in alcohol content, Jerry's is really easy to drink!!:)

Cheers,
Jon

I agree. About 1 fingers worth and a single ice cube. Give it about a minute, and it's very nice...

Sailor Jerry is usually less expensive than Captain Morgans around here. My last employer gave me a bottle of S.J. for my birthday each year.
If you guys like these, you really owe it to yourself to try Cockspur.:thumbup:

Yes...I got the name of someone who might sell this rum...waiting for a reply. It is certainly not widely available in Canada. In the meantime, I heard rumors Santa could bring me a Santa Teresa 1796! :) I'll certainly keep you posted...
