This is a Scotch Thread

Sadly, never seen a BevMo do tastings with spirits of any sort. Beer yes, wine yes, but no spirits. :(

I am taking a Beer, Wine, and Spirits class at my University this fall, and it comes with a hefty "product fee", so hopefully we will get to sample a lot of stuff!

Looks like Hi Time Wine is within a reasonable distance of where I'm at. I'll have to stop in sometime.

If you don't already, I'd highly suggest brewing your own beer to get an understanding of the subtleties of brewing, how to make an excellent brew, and to give an appreciation of those excellent brews that are out there.

There's another good whisky shop in SoCal but I can't remember the name of it to save my life. Mark (H20Cutter) knows which one it is though I'm sure.

I could talk for days on beer, too, but I'll refrain :D Maybe we should start a beer thread, we have one for Scotch and cigars

Hey Jeff,
I was just looking into making my own brew, found a place in Woodland Hills that has everything I need, even picking up a copy of "Brew like a Monk"

Cheers

Sounds good Mark, next time you have some time, come on up and we'll brew a batch together...

In SoCal, there's brew coops where they have all the equipment, etc. you just go in and make your beer, and leave it there to ferment, age, etc. Forget the name of it though.

Before you buy the stuff, we should talk :)

The coop thing sounds like a good idea, I know my wife would prefer it.

That homebrew of yours is outstanding, the raspberry one you made for Halloween trumps!!

I'll let you know what I decide to do.

Cheers

New bottlings at the store this week:

12yr Benriach Dark Rum Cask.
8yr Springbank Hazelburn

Technically not whisky, but:

Murry McDavid (Jim McEwan) has a couple of different rum bottleings. we just got the Carioni from Trinidad in. $60 a bottle but very worth it.

Malt whisky is waaaaaay too expensive in Israel. So I impose a "shaldag tax" on anyone coming to visit me--they have to schlep bottles.

My brother will visit in December. I'm gonna make him bring 4-6 bottles, which I will have shipped from a certain store which shall remain nameless.

I cannot drink in the quantities that I used to, so I go for quality. I don't do too much run-of-the-mill.

Current thinking is 3 bottles for the collection, and 3 for drinking.

Feel free to make suggestions.:D

For the collection does not mean put away for posterity, it just means saved for a special occasion.

Nimick, if I decide on a really high-end bottle (for me at least) it would be the Bruichladdich 125th year anniversary. It is a release of their 1970 (of which I still have a bottle) with a new finish. I have no doubt that Jim would have put his all into it. It is pretty pricy, though, I havce to see what else I want.

Some of the other possibilities are:

The new Port Charlotte release

The Talisker 25

A number of the Blackadder Raw Cask series.

Talisker 25! Definitely ... Talisker 25.

Perhaps a bottle of one of the older Ardbegs? From before the 'new' management...?

Wasn't aware it was so hard to get good single malt in Israel. I think you've found an excellent remedy for an unfortunate situation! :D

This just in:

Bruichladdich has just put out a new release:

The Port Charlotte 5 Y.O.
First Release from Bruichladdich
HEAVY PEATED Whisky

I have already reserved a bottle.

I'd like to try that! Any suggestions as to where I might go to reserve some...? :)

Old Physics,
yes, malt is very expensive here, since it's taxed up the wazoo. Israelis are not big drinkers, so nobody complains much, except for me.

I have a reputation, among my colleagues, concerning my tast for malt. Thi will ensure me a steady supply.

AS far a s the Port Charlotte goes, it is not cheap. Where do you live; I may be able to help you out.

edited to add: I just looked at your profile. Let me make a couple of calls.

When did you retire, by the way? I knew a couple of USAF program managers not too long ago....

Thank you for the assistance. :)

I've only been out and about for five years now. I stayed in about as long as Uncle Sam would allow. Didn't go too far -- just stepped into a contractor's shoes. :D

Still trying to help the USAF out as best I can while working in the agencies.
