PM sent, with my thanks.

Contact won't be particularly easy, but I definitely appreciate your willingness to help.

BTW, keep your head down and stay safe 'over there.' These are troubled and troubling times. :(

I received your PM, and put it up in a Greenwich Village paper in the personals section: Bondage:Into military and malts, please call between 02:00 and 0:400 EST. :D

nah, just kidding. I will be in touch.

edited to add: Thank you for the good wishes, but things are OK here. And I am something that happens to other people.

I'm on the other end of the spectrum from all of you, begining to try some scotch.
I have a bottle of johnnie walker red, and it is okay, but I have not yet decided if it is for me. Is this a fair enough choice for deciding whether or not I continue with scotch, or would you reccomend something else if I decide I'm not a fan of the JW red?

Actually JW red is a pretty good blend - and it is pretty popular - so generally well liked.

Probably better to tell us what you liked and didn't like about JW red -
so that lots of people can make suggestions.

eg: I love Lagavulin - but I also understand that may not be for everyone - some people really dislike Islay malts -
so don't want to steer you in a direction that you won't like.

Nope.

It's a good blend. BUT there are many, many other styles of whisky. American (Bourbon, Tennessee), Canadian, Scottish (lots of different styles there), even Japan and India!

If you don't like JWR, there are still a whole world of whiskies to try!

Dear lord no. Don't give up on Whiskey based on a bottle of speed rack quality blended.
In particular, I would encourage you to try some american bourbons-- bang for the buck they can't be beat....

I wasn't looking at ending the whisky/whiskey thing here, only the scotch. Give me a few more days though.. I've been busy, not much time to sit and consider what aspects I like, and what I dont. That said, my post was primarily in reaction to my first couple sips mid-day, just a bit anxious to try it, and found there to be more flavor than I was used to (remembered), or expecting.
I may try a bourbon next, I do remember finding a basic american whiskey to have a smoother flavor, but we'll see.

I guess this is how it goes when you make the transition from vodka, rum, gin etc.

I'm enjoying expanding my tastes, though.

Please dont call it scotch, its called whisky !!!

If your really into your whisky you need to drink "Isla malts" they are with out doubt the best whisky produced in Scotland.
"Laphroaig" is in my oppinion the best of the bunch. 10, 15 or 17 year olds are available, the flavours are all unique and it will depend on your likes or dislikes as to the one you stick with but they are the best for sure.

without meaning any disrespect or even disagreeing -

BUT Laphroaig - has a very distinctive and strong character -
it may not suit everyone's tastes -
many actively dislike Islays.

I happen to like Islay malts -
but I also understand that it is not necessarily for everyone.

I to, beg to differ, peat is not the only answer.

never mind the fact that all of my open bottles are Islay at the moment:o

The great thing about scotch whiskys is that they vary so much in character. You can do a lowland malt on a hot day, try that with Lagavulin (if you dare).

Laphroaig 10 and QC are excellent scotch IMHO as are Glenlivet 18 and Highland Park 12 & 18. There is so much variety in the scotch spectrum that you are bound to find something that suits your taste.

Oh, I dare. :D And we have hot days in Israel.:D:D

I do keep bottles of Highland and Islay malts open, as I do like some variety in my life. I would also keep a Campbelltown, if I could afford it. The best ones have priced themselves out of the market.

As far as the peat goes, depending on the bottling, you can find very peaty northern highland bottlings.

Mmmmm. Islays. My dad recently got my brother and I a bottle of Caol Isla 18. We thought we'd died and gone to heaven.

Yup, maybe i should have said "in my and many other peoples opinion" isla malts are the best !!! ;)

Anyone tried the Costco Kirkland label Macallan 18, saw it yesterday and wondered if it was the same as Trader Joes Macallan 18. They had it for $59.99 TJs is $45.99 here in SoCal. Anyone?

Glenmorangie Madiera and Burgandy Cask expressions are being 86'ed at the distillery.

There will be a Scotch tasting in my area next month featuring Ardbeg and the new Glenmorangie line (Glenmorangie is relaunching their entire linup). If there is anybody in the Rochester area who would be interested in attending, PM or e-mail me for more info. Space is limited.

imho the best scotch is the single malt varieties, while i think JWR & JWB are "ok" I really like the single malts.

irish whisky (ie bushmills, jamisons) is a little smoother imho and i have been drinking some of that lately, my girlfriend likes it so she always has it at her house, i havent drank it in yrs and it does grow on ya.
