Thoughts on selling 2nds and personal users???

I would feel like a tremendous cad if I started emailing all the makers asking for a "blem" (especially at a discount!). But I like a lot of maker's stuff and would joyously take a "second" (cosmetic blem) just to be able to have something of their's.

I guess if you put meals on the table and pay the mortgage by selling your work you have to be much more protective of your reputation and not let those less than perfects go.

But if the knives aren't your bread and butter, there are those of us that would cherish an almost perfect. Even if it didn't bear your mark anymore.

Why not remove the maker's mark (or not put one on to begin with), and try to find a worthy person to donate it to such as a soldier in Afghanistan or Iraq? This seems like an ideal solution to me, but perhaps I'm missing something...

I keep all my "blems" and abuse them during annual camping trips. Some just "weren't quite right" and I've kept them as my own little collection of oddballs that never made it out of the shop.

I always wished I could sell them at a discount. I mean, if a knife was to be a $300 knife and ends up having a bit of a glue gap that I didnt like and couldn't fix, its probably still a great knife for someone! That doesnt mean, however, that the $100 i might get for the blem wont cost me way over $100 if it somehow "gets out" and the fourth owner posts pictures on some forum saying "look at this crappy work."

...So its a tough call.

Heres a good example of a decent knife that never left the shop. Nice knife? Yes. Good HT? Yes. Comfortable? Yes. Aceptable glue line along curve where woods meets metal? No....so I use it to open boxes in the basement.
