Thoughts on Spyderco's "blurple" G10

I've been looking into getting a Manix 2 or Paramilitary 2 in the s110v and dark blue G10 configuration Spyderco is doing this year, but I'm not sure about the g10 color and would like some opinions on it from people who have gotten a knife with it.

Note: I am colorblind so pictures or detailed descriptions of what colors you think it is a combo of aren't too useful to me; the way my eyes perceive it I could go either way. I just want some opinions of whether people like it or not after using and carrying a Spyderco with that handle color.

It's just a color. To the untrained eye of a regular joe:

Black looks scary.

Cammo looks dangerous.

Orange looks friendly.

Blurple looks awesome.

Edit with picture. The market needs way more awesome colors on knives.

Yes, more colors would be good.

But keep in mind that it's used for branding and to get a premium price.
- The branding part is that all the Spyderco S110V knives use this blue. So part of it is a way to signal to those in the know (and maybe mostly to yourself) that you're using an awesome knife. Similarly on the burnt orange knives and HAP40.
- The getting a premium price part - if you want the colors you have to buy knives in the top half or so of the price spectrum to start to get color options.

On the blurple - it's not just the color, it's also the bit of translucency.

If you dont like it there are many aftermarket scales available for these models too which gives you options.

I like it. I've had my blurple PM2 for about a month now and the color is really cool. I especially like how it looks in sunlight. Something of note, however: Spyderco has permanently loctited every other screw on the scales on this knife. So while probably not impossible, a scale swap is going to be VERY difficult. I'm not so sure they want you to ditch the blurple scales and keep the S110v blade. Oh well, I have enough black knives in my collection and it's a welcome change.

What do you mean by permanently? Threadlock is common on many fasteners to prevent lost/loosening screws. Its used for many applications including knives. It is meant to be temporary(although comes in different strengths)and can be replaced as necessary. It shouldnt take much more force to crack it and would have to be done to give the knife a thorough cleaning anyway. Hopefully they used 242/243 as this is what should be used for this application.

I mean that it isn't the typical blue loctite, must be the red or similar. It is the "permanent" type for sure. I sheared the tip off of a T8 bit (safety torx so it was hollow) trying to loosen the stop bar screws. It appears to only be applied every other screw alternating each side. I'm sure a soldering iron and a good Wiha bit can get the job done. But I have never had a knife that came with anything other than the "blue" type and that is that I use myself. I'm curious if anyone else with this knife can confirm? This isn't my first rodeo... but I have never seen anything like this from any manufacturer, certinly not any of my other Spydies.

That sucks. That's kind of a douchy move by Spydie if they used high strength(red) Loctite. Using protected Torx is not very nice as it is(I didnt know they did that either). What the hell Sal and Eric? Those scales need to come off for cleaning and if you want to change them. As you said though, a little heat and a good driver should solve the problem and G10 is a thermoset polymer so there is little risk if your careful. I dont understand why a manufacturer would do stupid things like this. I can understand on a dangerous spring loaded auto but, a PM2? Hopefully they dont start doing this on other models too.

I like it OK. I probably wouldn't have bought the same knife if it had only black G-10. I am so bored of black G-10. Additionally the steel that it encases has been fantastic so far. I am really pleased with Spyderco's S110V and Blue/Purple knives.

I found that the color has grown on me.

And yes, it is a nice break from the ubiquitous black.

Same here, at first I was luke warm to it. Over time it really pops when you look at it.

Personally I think it took some courage for Spyderco to put so much resources into the specific color, if I'm correct it was specially made for them.

To be clear, the screws aren't protected Torx, it is the type of T8 bit that I had on a multi set, this guy here:

Just demonstrating how much force I used only to have the tip snap off. They are really on there good. I too hope this is not the future of Spyderco as I like being able to disassemble my knives.

Use a blowdryer or soldering iron to heat the screws and weaken the loctite.

The 2013 forum knife with s110v had green scales.

Blurple isn't scary so that's good.

I honestly don't think the color of a handle should affect how someone will view the performance of a knife. In other words I only think you would worry about the color is if the color was actually important to you. Otherwise it should have no effect on how the blade performs. A manix is a manix and paramilitary is that regardless of the color. And either way even if someone didn't like it its nothing a little rit dye cant fix. :D

That color (officially Midnight Blue) is the reason I want one of the knives in the series. My wife saw the PM2 in this color and said, "What a beautiful knife!" Nuff said.

I like the color, looks great on the Manix and the PM2. My blurple PM2 has the best action as well, of my current 8 PM2s.

DPC, that is one hell of a PM2 collection! I am certainly jealous!

Atakdog, two things. First, to me, the blurple is an awesome color. I love blue and purple, so I love that color. It is definitely more blue to me, so don't worry that it's a girly purple color (I know you can't tell being colorblind). No one will judge you for having this color of knife, if that's what you're worried about.

Second, I recently did some research into colorblindness, after learning a good friend is colorblind. I sympathize with you, man. Those of us with normal vision take colors for granted. I watched some videos and saw some pictures that are supposed to approximate what someone with colorblindness sees. It's very drab by comparison. Have you ever heard of EnChroma glasses? They are glasses/sunglasses that allow people with colorblindness to see colors, including purple. There are lots of videos on YouTube of people trying them out, some without prior knowledge of what they were doing (surprises from other people who didn't tell them what was about to happen).

It is pretty profound watching people see colors for the first time, especially purple. Apparently purple is one of the colors most affected by colorblindness. It's pretty amazing to see colorblind people see purple for the first time. It absolutely blows their mind, with many of them breaking down into tears. That is what made me go off on this tangent. If you haven't ever tried those glasses, they might be worth looking into. I think they are around $200-400, and if you don't see purple, they may make you love these blurple knives even more. Sorry for going off topic.

I hope this is kosher to post a video link. If not, let me know and I'll remove it. Here are some videos of people seeing color for the first time:
