thoughts on strider SNG!

Any chance of a pic mate !!

That's the same one I'm looking at getting (with stonewash blade)

I love my SnG. Lockup is rock solid. Rides real comfortable in my pocket.

Opens smooth as anything.

I even like the way it feels in my hand...

Mine has the Double Gunner grips so it's nice and grippy.

In other words, the blade would eventually cut through a lanyard, if one were attached through the lanyard hole. I don't use a lanyard, so it was a moot point for me.

I found that odd considering they market their knives towards military users and the like. I lost my SNG on the side of the mountain and wish I could have figured out a way to tie it down. Great knife, but I picked up a ZT folder instead, same steel, same locking system, and I've learned to deal with the assisted opening.

SMF for me! Yeah I've owned both Sebbies and Striders several times over, the Strider gets the nod from me as more of a user type blade. To me the Sebbies were always too pretty to use.

I've only ever had one sebbie that got hard use and had to sell that when I needed some cash. The ones I've had lately were mint and I never wanted to ruin them !!

Dumb, I know !!

yep that's how I always felt about them.:o

I have an SnG and a small classic Sebenza. I think they're both alright. I think the production quality (fit and finish, "walk and talk", etc) of the Sebenza is finer. I think the thumb stud on the SnG is not useful, at least not for hands of my size. The SnG feels more stout which is neat, but it also rides huge in my pocket so I hardly ever carry it. I like the radiused spine on the Sebenza (just a nice touch IMO) and prefer its overall size.

that's because it is not a thumbstud. it is a stop pin.

i like the sng, i have a cc version. it is much better than the standard. scales are radiused and the blade is thinner.

i find the wide portion of the grip actually more comfortable over extended use than my sebenza.

not a comparison of the two, necessarily. they are very different and marketed to different demographics. but i do have both, and like both very much.

I've always thought of the undecorated Sebenzas as being aesthetically ideal for (ab)use. The handle slabs are like canvas awaiting a patina.

Most objects with that level of refinement deteriorate aesthetically with wear, but Sebenzas mature. I think that's part of the genius of the design.

The DG SnG is definitely a classic, though. :) I would have undoubtedly snagged one by now had it not been for the fiscal implosion.

Owning a Sebbie and Sng, I feel I must join in.....
As stated two different animals...
My jeans knife (EDC/User) is the SnG... I use her hard and the finish just looks better (I say it develops character). I love the choil. I love the fact that when closed, the frame its hefty enough i could smack somebody in the head with it ;-)
Slacks/Casual... Thats when I throw down with the Sebenza.
Fwiw.... I dont feel the Strider is overpriced and they do hold their value.

I carry an SNG as an EDC. I think the design is very well done. The choil is perfect, the ergonomics are deceptively well thought out. The feel it good. The quality is high but not refined. The thumb studs were really never made as a deployment method, the hole is. Someone had mentioned that they are useless. They act as the blade stop so not useless. If Busse put out a folder I would think this would be close to it.

I know the Sebenza is compared to it all the time. They are different animals I think. I dont care for a n all TI frame I need some G10 for grip and I think it make the knife tougher.

VoxHog said it before I could: save your money until you can find an XM18 and spend it on that. Even Rick's midtech version will make you happier for all-around use than either of those others

I have an XM18 on order. I recently had been told that they are a bit thicker than the SNG. If so that would be problematic for EDC.

The more posts there are the keener I get. I don't want a knife so refined that I don't want to use it. Sebbie's are great and Chris actually hails from near enough the same town as me. I've always liked Busse and think a Strider is a close to Busse like as you can get !!

I have the opportunity to get a SNG double gunner with tumbled blade for a very good price (and it's mint) from one of the nicest guys I've had the pleasure of meeting on any forum. Only snag is I will never be able to trade it - I will be buying it with money from an insurance claim for a pocket watch which was given to my Grandfather (and then to my Mum and then to me for my 21st) for 25 years service in the Irish Garda !! It will be sentimental because of that reason and will have to be a keeper !!

Thats why you get a tumbled blade, change the pins to matte, and get Micarta inlays. Plum ugly compared to the UG and CG Sebbies, but I like the look.

I had a UG and wood inlay sebbie(front side shiney) and you are right...they were just to fancy and to purdy for me. I had an XM-18 in a pass around and hated the drop in the handle(on any smaller knife), the Strider and Sebbie's straight handle gives you much more purchace.

Two year old pic I've shown before...Plain and ugly(for a sebbie)

As I said early on, there both great with there straight handle(a must for me).
Just depends on what YOU want.

don;t get me wrong, I really like sebbies. One thing I am looking forward to is snapping/flicking the blade open. From what I have read this is a real no-no with sebs.

Why would you want to do that you may ask (I did) but having watched a very good comparison on you tube I can see merit in quick deployment and not having to worry about hurting your blade by being a little too vigorous !!

Oh man, I constantly open and close folders as fast as I can...its almost a problem, people think I'm nuts. I play with my small sebbie(among others) everyday(for two years) and there is and will be no damage. With enough practice you know just how hard to open any knife fast without having to flick it...its all in the thumb movement, you never need to move the hand or knife handle to open very very fast without slamming the blade against the stop pin.

But as I also stated in my very eary post, they are two very differant knives.
From what you have said I feel like you would like the SnG better. You don't mind the bulk, and you said you would want it to be the one closest to a Busse. That would be the SnG.

I really do like my rattle of a SNG but the only other folder own that I like more than my SNG is my Spyderco SNG.

Brendan, you may like the zero tolerance 0300 better than that SNG. Check into it.

My own EDC used to be my Tiger Warden, but that was relegated to my Maxpedition when I grabbed my Benchmade 32bk. Aside from the fact that I love the balisong as a design, I've never even SEEN a folding knife which locks up as tight as a Bali. They are just rock solid...even more-so than the frame-lock design. Of course, they're not legal everywhere and they have a stigma to them, but as far ad functionality and speed, IMO you can't beat a quality Bali.

And btw...if you really dig the Strider aesthetic, you can check outthe Larry Davidson Nightsong which is rumored to have been influenced by Mick and Dwayne's designs. Monster balisong with a fresh design, and it's be rock solid. It would also be a LOT more fun to play with than a typical folder.

An easy fix for this is to attach the lanyard to the ti side only,I never had a lanyard cut by a Strider with it going through both holes.I liked the lanyard better with it just on the ti side.
I have had SNG,SMF and Sebenzas, they are all great knives no matter what your feelings are toward Strider. They are different enough to make it hard to compare them. The Stiders are nice for hard heavy use with good fit and finish. The Sebenzas fit and finish is at least a couple levels higher IMHO.
So IMO go with a Strider if you think you might need to hammer it through a oil drum but if you are looking for the best EDC for slicing and general cutting needs the Sebenza is the way to go.I will say that I do not have a Strider right now but a Rangefinder Sebenza is in my pocket right now.

Google: Bradley Alias for a CR knockoff

Oh hell,I had one.It would start to fall apart after a few days carry.I could open and close the blade maybe 50 times and the pivot screw would be ready to fall out.Very hard to get the pivot adjusted just right too.

Thats shocking....it's made by Benchmade for them if I'm not mistaken.
