Thoughts on the Chris Reeve Cult....

I think the cult status is deserved, CRK has worked very hard to acheive what they have and they deserve to following they have.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
Yes, I'm a miserable prick, because I don't own MORE BUSSES!!!!!!!
:D Long live the Busse fans!

Everyone has a price point that once exceeded believe that what they spent was a wise purchase. This price point varies with ones income and state in life but nonetheless exists. These are nothing more than well made production knives with adequate fit and finiish, I know as I have three of them. They are nice knives, nothing more. They are not hand made custom knives any more than a Kershaw Leek is. Get over them!

I own many production folders. CR knife 3 bills, too much for my pocketbook. But hey to each their own and I can still I enjoy what I own. I'd spend the money plus on a new bow, but i'm an archery freak. Anyways I don't think this thread should offend the CRers, just make them come to an understanding of their addiction. LOL

depends on the knife and maker

and

$300 would be expensive for a production knife

:D
But there are people saying that a sebenza is as expensive as a cutom knife. I'd say it's more in the expensive production price range than the cheap custom. There aren't a very many custom pocket knives worth your money for $300. And if anyone happens to know any, don't bother to tell me.

I don't browse the forums regularly, but all the custom knives I've seen for sale here at BF have been under the price of a Sebenza.

As of the 2004 Blade Show, CRK had won the Blade Show Manufacturing Quality Award four times in five years. I am not sure who won in 2005 and 2006. It ain't just another production knife boys and girls.

5 Sebenzas? I would rather buy a car. That way i could have a life instead of sitting in my parents basement playing with knives i will never have a use for. :jerkit: LOL :D

The winner in 2005 and 2006 was also CRK.

Whether all of that is true or not can be debated, but you simply cannot argue with another person's preferences in knives.

But how does one justify purchasing a non-custom production knife that they have never even seen and have no clue as to the specifics?

I joined this forum last week looking for a decent knife for my toolbox.

I ran into the name Tom Mayo (I remember buying a watch from him last year), and discovered he made knives.

This put me onto a Buck Mayo TNT, which led me on the trail of "titanium framelocks".
The price for a Buck Mayo from online dealers in Canada was about $30 short of a Sebenza, so I decided what the hell, I'll get a Sebenza.

It's due to arrive tomorrow.

...and that's why I bought a Sebenza sight unseen. :o

Other than an old Victorinox, it's my first folding knife ever, so I don't know what to expect...

PS I should add that from the pictures, it's the one that was most pleasing to my eyes, compared to various Benchmades, the Buck Mayo and Spydercos.

My opinion is that there are plenty of fans of any maker who will buy the next new knife just because it's from their favorite manufacturer. There are plenty of people who try to collect models from one specific company.

You know, kind of like:

Dodge vs. Ford vs. Chevy... etc.
Pro sport team memorabilia
Movies made by favored directors
Favored bands/music

Maybe some of these people won't like the new knife "as much" as other models. When was the last time you've heard a fan not be happy with the latest production of any of the above categories, but still consider themselves fans?

I buy virtually all my knives without holding them. If I don't like them, I just re-sell them.

As for CRK, Busse, Strider, Custom, etc.... To each his own and everything has a following. There are even Swinger (or whatever the heck it's called) Stapler collectors. Go figure.

It's a part of life and when you find something you truly enjoy and others feel the same way, it's bound to be discussed often. We could even be considered a "Cult" by those not on the forums. They may be asking "Why would someone pay X amount of $$$ to help support knife discussions?".

To each his own and his own, may it be of quality.

BTW, who's getting Sebbies for $300? Most of the ones I like and use are $400 and up. I'd rather have a $400+ knife I like and that suits my purposes than a $300 custom that just sits in my drawer. Besides, (and I know this has been beaten to death) most "custom" makers are just individuals that make the same or maybe a limited number of knives over and over.;)

I think the cult status is deserved, CRK has worked very hard to acheive what they have and they deserve to following they have.

I agree that companies that work as hard as CRK do to build and support top quality products deserves the following they have. If a few people go overboard with their praise, it's something I can live with.

The winner in 2005 and 2006 was also CRK.
The award was given from the industry, so enough said about its reputation & quality.

I have 3 Sebenza and 1 mnandi. They are my favourite.

WHK sells for more but no one even bother to pick on them. To me CRK is better because I can take it apart, send it back for re-furbish, etc. Also rough it on weekends (micarta small sebenza) and play nice on weekdays (mnandi).

Custom for less than a CRK, let me know if it walks and talks just as nice.

I tried some custom that walks and talks like a CRK or WHK, but they cost at least twice as much.

I am sold on CRK. A work knife that I do need to baby and can do anything a cheaper knife can but looks, walks & talks musch better.

CRK fans can be a little biased. But given the general wait time on a regular production knofe from them, the unseen special is enough incentive to just stand in line and then decide if you want one or not when it is time to pay for it.

I got my first CRK the other day. It was a LH Snakewood Mnandi; needless to say I'm not going to pick-up another knife for a long, long time. :o

I gotta agree with the first couple of posters. I first discovered bladeforums around 2000 (my original user id got deleted I guess). I kept seeing people talking about sebenzas, to the point I wanted one. A good friend of mine who turned me on to bladeforums bought one from the exchange here and when I saw it, I was like "Thats it?". I just couldn't figure out all the "beam of light from heaven and an angel's chorus" posters. No doubt sebenzas are nice knives, but in my opinion they are not worth the price tag. Not to crap on anyones opinion, i'm all for you guys who love your sebenzas, but they just aren't for me. Leaves more for you as someone above said.
