Thoughts on WSK Knives ?

100_1860.jpg

I got the chance to use this a bit this weekend...and I was tickled pink with it quite honestly. The thing is a tank, and yet still useful.

Todd Hunt did a heck of a job on it.

I owned a Tops Tracker and thought it was kind of cool.

Then I held a Beck WSK, one of the originals, and the balance was freaking amazing for such a large knife.

I promptly sold the Tops imitation.

If the Beck WSK wasn't $1200 I would buy one.

Ive owned a RS6 WSK for about 4 or 5 years now and it has been a great hiking buddy.
The TOPS version is a toy in comparison.
Some believe the design is a gimmick, but I find it very useful.

Same, I believe there was some bad blood between Beck and Brown about rights to the knife design, but IMO it doesn't matter much as Beck knives (while the original and beautiful in craftsmanship) are priced right out of the hands of most consumers looking for that style of blade.

$1200 is well above my price point (even for a custom), hell even the $1000 'Field Grade' is.

All well and good, folks like different things in knives, that's quite true and I am fairly well at peace with that. I think, anyway!

But let me ask an honest question: Has anybody had trouble making notches for traps without a saw? (sawback or otherwise) I ask that to point out the idea that the knife really is full of crap. Are there any features on the knife that truly give it great advantages over a regular old, say, Green River pattern? Or a Grohmann? Or a Mora? What types of knife designs to people that live in the wilderness for real use on a daily basis to keep themselves alive? I realize that is somewhat limited by what's available in any given location, so that colors the answer to that a bit, but I'm not aware of too many of those tools that are made with multiple grinds and sawbacks.

In the end, use what you like, but that's not going to stop me from asking what on earth somebody is thinking when they use some sort of goofy monstrosity like a WSK :p

I say if its sharp and holds an edge use what ever works for ya. if nothing else that knife with most of the weight toward the tip should make it a pretty good chopper. I think you cant go by how a knife looks to judge how if it works, only use will tell the truth. Pitdog has used his and proved that the design does work. its not just a movie prop. LOL

Does Todd Hunt have a website? I did a quick search and no luck...

I know this is an older thread but I'm a huge fan of WSK's

I know they are not everybody's favorite blade and I am a firm believer in a 2 knife set up but I have always liked them

I am pleased to see Beck at it again also :)

Here are some of mine

Beck & Martin

Those two are pretty cool Joe, how is the functionality of these two? Have you ever tried them out, and how long have you owned them.

Thanks Doug

Hey Doug

I have had the Beck for a fairly long time the Martin not as long

I've used the Martin more than the Beck not because I like it better the Beck is a better knife but at the time Beck was not making them so there was a collector value

They work well and are fun knives

I don't think they are the perfect knife but I like the way they look and it's a neat idea :)

Yes their probably not the perfect knife just something different. I was just thinking about getting one maybe to try out. The Becks probably a better balanced and built knife than the others but cost wise it definately shows. Well thanks for the reply and imfo and great pics Joe.

That is awesome looking! Very nice blade for sure.

Mike did a good job especially for the money. Tapered tang WSK clean grinds I was very impressed when I got it. Shame Mike had some problems and I haven't heard anything positive in a long time

For me he was great to work with.

I've carried this knife in a custom scout sheath by Richard at Rawhide Leaher. I wear it on an over belt and Have used it to clear shooting lanes trim branches etc.

He did a good job on giving it the multi position handle thing which is part of the WSK thing

Great for chopping but when I came upon a green bamboo thicket I'll have to say I've used better cutters :)

It is scary looking
