Thoughts on WSK Knives ?

Brian - I would take your rendition any day of the week if for no other reason than I find a well-done full flat grind (I forge most of my flat grinds! ;) ) to take care of the cutting tasks I need a knife to do. Those look like some comfortable, practical working knives.

WSKs still rule :)

but good simple bushcrafting knife can win the day

Damn, I hate that I get sucked into these threads. I have a WSK, when it gets back from W.VA. it can be loaned to those skeptical.

I am totally skeptical...:)

Just kidding Murph,
What make do you have???

geez, who's letting these guys in here :> back! back to the Becker side ;)

Great thread; Love the look of the WSK:thumbup: Though, sadly, I've never owned one.

So what makers/manufacturers are currently producing WSK's or WSK styled knives? And if you've owned it, a brief review would be great (ex/ Tops - great once you thin out the grind some,...). As always, pics are appreciated:D.

Bryan Breeden is working on one when he gets chance, hopefully I can give you a review !:D:thumbup:

[Even though I am still working on mine It would not be the one knife for all things. could / can / will it work yea I think so. But still I am not into just carrying one knife with me lol.

I have some help in the shop now and so I hope to get all the orders caught soon. I hate being more than a couple of weeks behind. my nephew is drilling out the handles and cutting out the handle material lol. The stuff I hate to do.
As soon as I get mostly caught up I am going to work on the WSK style knife that I started on and put on the back burner till I make/ get the time lol.

When I get one done you know pitdog you will be a prefect person to send it to and see what you think of it.
I have had that in mind for a while now lol lol lol.

Anyways just some of my thoughts.

Here is what I have cut and shaped so far,
IMG_0208.jpg

I have in the last 2 months roughly had the chance to handle 2 of the tops verions.
I was impressed with them but thought I could make mine to suit me better. More blade length and not so thick and not so wide of a blade like the ones I have seen.
mine is going to be 3/16" thick and has a 7" long blade.

I just need to work on the saw part. maybe in the next couple of weeks. maybe that is lol.

3/16"-7" long sounds perfect Bryan, how long is the handle ?

The WSK "every tool in one knife" is not for everybody... I like a stripped down version of it, personally. But I am seeing those labeling the "one knife" philosophy as stupid or ridiculous. I think that is a narrow way to look at things. Not useful to YOU is a perfectly acceptable opinion... not useful to ANYONE? that sounds absolute, IMO... and there is a price paid by those who talk in absolutes.

Sweet Knife Rick and Sage advice too

:)

Personally, I have always like the idea and principle behind a WSK. I even picked up the Tracker T-2, the scaled down version. It didn't take me long to resell it. It was just too small to do any real chopping and the grind was too thick for my preference. Ever since I got rid of it, I've considered buying the full sized version. To be of real use, I don't think that style of knife can be "scaled down" and still be as useful. I feel, in a 'one knife situation' size does matter. To me Dr Bill has made his point in other threads: it is harder to make a little knife do big tasks than it is to make a big knife do smaller tasks. I may not want to strap a big knife to my belt and walk around with it, but isn't that what my pack is for?

I, for one, would like to give a WSK another try. Maybe I can find a beater one day to fiddle around with....

Great looking blade Rick ! Do you still make any knives with that varied grind that I remember you experimenting with ? From what I remember it was a little along the lines of what Iz Turley sometimes uses.
