Thrifty Thursday... Cheap Traditional Knives

I stumbled upon this fascinating info about Imperial when looking for more info on the maker of my newest thrifty treasure:

https://artinruins.com/arch/stillinuse/imperialplace/interview-w-lou-fazzano.html

I didn’t find anything new about The Ideal, though.

This one doesn’t have quite the alligator snap on closing as my red 2-blade model, but still decent. Came in unused condition - I had to put edges and points on the blades. The stains on the sheepsfoot are from me - the blades were so shiny I thought at first they might be stainless, so I tested it with some yellow mustard.

The position of the spey and sheepsfoot blades are reversed from most stockman knives I have seen. I actually like that, since I am more likely to use the sheepsfoot, and this makes it easier for me to access.
Congrats on your new knife, Tom; it's The Ideal stockman! :thumbsup::thumbsup::cool:

I enjoyed reading the interview with Imperial's Fazzano; thanks for the link! :):thumbsup::thumbsup:

Age and circumstances have kept me away from BF for an extended period but I’ve learned to find and appreciate diamonds in the rough that fit right in this thread. Who knew that Frost produced beauties like this.View attachment 3070286
Good to hear from you Alan! I get really busy in summer and find it tough to find time on The Porch too. I always find that the folks are glad to hear from us whenever we can 🙂

That's a nice Frost, Alan; I really like the blade shape. :thumbsup::thumbsup::cool:
(I also like the 23 on the bolster: Willie Horton's number from the 1968 Detroit Tigers. 🤓)

These Thornton and Johnston knives come up on the auction site here and there; they are typically cheap and sharpen up really nice... Great users.

Pretty cool, Kevin! :cool::thumbsup::thumbsup:
I like the "blue sky and clouds" handle on the middle knife and the shape of the pen blade on the top knife.

When I moved to Connecticut last year I had packed up the remnants of my collection but threw this Schrade SP3 in my pocket and it ended up being the cure for high end knives. Just like an inexpensive car will get you from point A to point B the Schrade is a great pocketknife.View attachment 3076854
Totally agree, Alan! :thumbsup::thumbsup:🤓
For me, it was a set of 12 different Rough Rider patterns that convinced me that budget knives were the sweet spot for me.
Oriental Imperials are crazy! I have several that are some of my least expensive knives, but function as well as any of my knives (a yellow Sodbuster Jr. style and a cracked ice sowbelly stockman immediately spring to mind).

This week I'll post this aluminum Rough Rider shadow stockman with VG-10 stainless blades:

GT, I love the RR VG-10 knives, but I have a hard time with the painted parts on the aluminum scale knives. They end up looking ugly in short order.

Thanks for the "heads up". :thumbsup::thumbsup:
I haven't carried mine very much, so I haven't noticed any paint problems yet.
I think RR has some aluminum handle knives with a jigged or crinkly texture. Do you have any idea how the paint holds up on those?
