Thrifty Thursday... Cheap Traditional Knives

Doesn't get any cheaper than this. A freebie from a feed store up in Klamath Falls, Oregon with the purchase of various ranch and farm supplies.

There are still feed stores that do that?

I remember my father getting a free SAK from a feed store sometime in the mid 1960s, when I was a kid. That's how he was introduced to the brand, and as a result so was I. I still carry a SAK.

O.B.

But was there a minimum purchase ... like a new AWD tractor or other implement, such as a combine or hay bailer, or however many 50 or 100 pound bags of seed ... or a truck load of feed?

I remember when some new cars came with a "free with purchase" knife with the car brand on the tang.
Plymouth/Dodge, Chevy, VW, Fiat, and a couple "luxury" brands were among the guilty up to the mid 1970's.
The knife was "free" but the vehicles were not necessaraly "thrifty" ... and in no way "free". 😇

Forget what the exact requirement was but yes, it was tied to the purchase of goods - barb wire (minimum of 500-feet), feed, etc..

I think my new Swing Blade qualifies as "thrifty" ... it set me back just under $11.⁰⁰ (USD) shipped.

Pretty sure that at under $13.⁰⁰ (USD) shipped, my
Jin Jun Hang 'Professional Slingshot and Knife Two-In-One Combination' also qualifies for "thrifty" status ... for either the slingshot or knife half.

(traditional "no-no" bits hideded (Per Peregrin's instructions) so it can shown without breaking the laws of Traditional Land. 😇)

Sad. 😟 My Imperial Jackmaster Barlows were "thrifty" when new (1956 to 1988 at $4.95 or less, and 1988 to 2004 (Imperial Ireland) at under $8.⁰⁰ ...)
They not exactly "thrifty" at current "collector prices" so not qualified to show in this thread ... 🙄

Come to think of it, some of my Rough Rider's are no longer "thrifty"!😳

My RR887 large Smooth Tobacco Bone Sunfish, for example.
I paid $9.99 (shipped as part of a larger order on the "big river"/"South American Jungle" site.
Saw a video on You Tube reviewing the knife. Guy said he "stole" his off the big auction site for "ONLY" $60.⁰⁰ (plus shipping)!!!
A great knife, but not "thrifty" anymore.

Whoda thunk Rough Rider would become high priced "collector" knives???🤯😳🙄
Not I. 🤨🙄

Just ordered a Rough Rider G10 canoe, carbon steel, for $12.95. Should be here tomorrow.
I have the identical but for tang stamp and shield Colt version.
(When Colt left the cutlery market in 2017, several of the Colt knives (the G10 and carbon steel canoe and large moose (which I also have and recommend) and the "Buckshot Bone" series among them, were moved to the Rough Rider/Ryder line.)
A fantastic "heavy duty" (IMHO) Canoe.

Blades are near 0.125 inch thick at the spine and tang, which to me says "heavy duty".

rather than the 0.062 inch normally used.

Over-all width is about the same as a bolster width

not enough to make a noticable differance in the pocket.

The blades have a great heat treat, and can be reprofiled to 10° per side/20° inclusive, without issues.

Congrats on your new Canoe. 😁👍

BTW, it pairs well with the same series (heavy duty - same blade width) large Moose.

I like the modified Spey blade with extra belly.
