Anyone else getting ravaged by these little guys?

While doing the morning stretch the other day I notice a spot on my arm. It was a tick settling in for breakfast.:thumbdn: I burned him, ahh the smell of burning tick in the morning.

I then let the dogs out and I feel something on the inside of my thigh, here it is.

It found a similar death to the first.

Anyway I'm up to 8 of the little vampires in five days and I don't recall seeing so many so early.:thumbdn:

I using OneShot on the dogs and my Wirehair doesn't seem to be getting any but the Husky has a lot more fur and they seem to be hitching a ride into the house with her, and I actually pulled a pea sized one from under her mouth yesterday. It gave a nice blood spatter pattern.

If I didn't have a creek in the back I'd spray the place down with something nasty, oh well.

I think the companies that are making tick repellent will be doing well this season.

I had a total of 5 on me the last two times I went out (2 from just walking through a trail while fishing). They are in full force here in NY.

I'm in the tick capital of the world. There are only a couple months of the year where we don't see them.. Everyone in my house has had Lyme Disease at least twice....

 That sucks, I hope it was caught before anything permanent happened.

I do a lot of playing around in deer tick country and have been very fortunate not to get Lyme Disease, thankfully.

I will be doing a restock on Ultrathon for the family, I just hate having to apply repellent every time we strike out to the back yard.

Its part of life up here as well....

Just keep checking yourself and the family often.

we have it bad here in Va too...have had two each time ive been able to go for a hike. last year i got lymes and every time i pull one off i get that stomach sinking feeling and get itchy all over.

We don't always see the classic symptoms like the stiff neck and bulls-eye rash, sometimes its nausea and vertigo.. With the kids we look for vomiting and fatigue, my son also had Bell's Palsy from it once... Nothing permanent though, yet...

The doctors in my area just assume Lyme when you show up feeling poorly in the warm months. They don't even bother with the test anymore (since it gives false negatives alot).

Ticks are a real concern especially for those of us who typically go off trail. Conventional wisdom is sorely lacking. Advice such as check yourself over after being out in the woods for the day is useless. I can't even see my ass, let alone see something as small as a tick crawling on it. Where's Brad Paisley when you need him?

Years ago, I used to get checked annually for Lyme. One year my doctor calls me and says that there is now a Lyme vaccine (Lymerix) available. I say to him, maybe we should wait and see how it works out. He assures me that it had been extensively tested, so I say okay.

There's a series of 3 injections, one today, one a month from now, and the last, a year away. By the time I had 2 injections, some of the bad stuff comes out about Lymerix. I figure, I've already had the two, so I had the third.

By now, any prophylactic benefits are long gone, as per the CDC, and if tested for Lyme, I will produce positive results because of the vaccine. :(

Luckily I didn't develop (as far as I can tell - old age, creaking bones etc.) any of the side effects, which were the cause for a class action law suit against Smith, Kline, Beecham.

I guess this year I'll have to look into obtaining some Permethrin for my clothing, although it is not approved for this type of use in Ontario.

Tick season just ended for us. They come about 3 times a year for a couple of weeks, and then disappear again. My cats are the big victims. Its not uncommon for one cat to have 2-3 mama ticks sucking them dry at once. Around their ears, and under neck are tick favorite feeding spots. When we find them we pull them out with teezers and wipe the wound w/ rubbing alcohol. I never burn a latched on tick, as it can cause them to regurgitate their stomach contents, possibly causing an infection for the host.

My family hasn't had any issue with them though.

Where abouts are you located?

I've already had 2 attached. One on my cheek and one on my ear lobe. This year they are latching on quicker.

We don't have much Lyme down here. I'd say it's almost rare. There's deer ticks but I've never had one on me. The ones that get all over you here are the brown dog ticks.:thumbdn: They are the ones that can give you Rocky Mt. Spotted Fever.

I got 2 this weekend while out and about in the woods. I have been pulling them off the dog regularly, the frontline doesn't seem to be working this year too well. I just found one that had settled into an old tick bite. The frontline killed it but not before it made a pretty nasty little hole. I kept wondering why the bite wouldn't heal. I picked the scab off it and found a dessicated tick under it. Spectacular. To top it all off the head is still in there, so now I get to dig that out too. Poor gal. She's getting a break right now before I dig back in. Wish me luck.

Oh, and good luck to everyone else this tick season! So far I've been able to catch mine fairly early.

BTW, I had one on me that I've never seen before... brownish in color with a white spot on it's back? Just a white dot. I don't think he had latched on yet. Any idea?

Glad they are not a problem much in my neck of the woods- you southern guys have all the fun nasties- I'll take the odd bear/ moose any day!

DOC-C...look into Permanone to suit your permethrin needs. It is what we used on our clothes to protect against the cracked-out skeeters and such in Kenya. It was the only thing that works. Protects your clothes for 2-3 washes. Here's a link:

Hey Doug,

Thanks for the link, but I don't think they can ship to Canada. Somebody on here, gave me a heads up on how to obtain it here, I just have to find where I put the information.
