Tidings and the return of Schatt and Morgan?

If they turn out decent I know we'll all be pleased:thumbsup: But given the look of the pix, these prototypes seem below par and it's kind of odd that such pictures would get into circulation and not expect to receive scepticism. It's not trial by internet it's initial reactions to what has been shown.

Schatt & Morgan is a revered name with a considerable pedigree, if they are going to be successfully relaunched then they are going to have to produce a knife that exudes quality, not just rely on the 'magic' of a name.

We shall see, the jury is only just assembling, it's far from out. :D

Thanks, Will

those laurels have withered and faded long ago sadly

You guys are being too negative about a product you’ve never held in your hand nor know it’s price. Trial by internet before a crime’s been committed.

Well, next time we'll just make sure you approve all comments before we make them.

These knives look poorly finished in several clear, key areas. That's what we're remarking on. Nobody here needs another knife, so if S&M can't get these foundational issues sorted, my worry is that they won't be around long.

Ok I'm making a decree, henceforth we shall not pass judgment upon knives yet to be based upon knives that once were that are being produced by someone that is not the original manufacturer of said knives so shouldn't carry the burden of the previous manufacturers mistakes and or neglect to produce a product to a standard they had previously attained but failed to continue into the death throws of the parent company that produced the aforementioned knives while holding rights to the name and branding of said knives. We shall then forthwith to only discuss which patterns and materials we'd hope to see manufactured by the new holders of the aforementioned names and branding and shall hold our opinions on the quality of said knives until the manufacturer has time to actually build the damn things and some of us have had enough of them in hand to determine the quality thereof and then and only then we will nit pick the living hell outta them and let the newly formed company stand or fall on its OWN merits.
Well they've had time, and though we don't have in hand the VISUAL quality in some seems lacking. Perhaps the manufacturer could provide a couple of samples to be passed around by members here?
See if they'll pass knife knut scrutiny?o_O

I’ll just quote myself here, because I still have the same questions:

I guess my biggest question is, who will actually be making these knives? I don’t know anything at all about Mr. Cooper (is he a cutler?) or Bluegrass knives. I see they have a lot of Winchester branded knives on their website, many of which seem pretty pricey. Do they make these knives themselves? Are they currently producing knives, or are these new-old-stock? Are there experienced cutlers in Winchester, Ohio?

The knives don’t make themselves, nor do the machines make the knives. You could turn me loose in the GEC factory, and I guarantee that no one would be willing to pay even Rough Rider prices for what I would turn out. :D

I’m looking forward to seeing these new Schatt & Morgans, but I certainly have some reservations.

Having seen what’s been shown so far, I think I have even more reservations.

All new knife companies have issues when they first get started. All of them.
Greg
This is certainly true. I remember some of the first GEC's I owned, nail breaker pulls were deal breakers for me. I even had one that the teal green bone dye kept staining my hand.

Id say these were unfinished knives from schatt and morgan. Mr cooper has since been worked on finishing this old stock. Probably why these look kinda hodge podge. My basis for this is that i bought an unfinished knife stamped with the dreaded “DFC” from mr cooper.

No, the knives in the pics are clearly stamped Winchester, OH. New production/samples.

I received this 043 160 S&M Sowbelly today.... A very comfortable shape with great construction... View attachment 1507242 View attachment 1507243 View attachment 1507244

That's a nice looking knife. I've been wanting to try out an S&M Sowbelly but the only ones I've been able to find in casual searches are the 5 blade ones.

Excuse my ignorance, but is that one of the New Releases or an older model.:).

I suspect it's NOS - it is sporting the Titusville stamp.

Dylan..... I found this one at the big auction house......I try hard to make sure that they were manufactured during the Bill Howard era....I believe there are some recently assembled ones that might be subpar from a quality standpoint.....

While we're awaiting the flood of brand new, high quality S&M's here are a couple older ones to whet your appetite....
The jigged knife is older than the smooth bone... The difference in quality is very noticeable when compared side by side... I hope the new offerings are indistinguishable from the output when Bill Howard was at the tiller.....

Some of you may have seen this recent acquisition, a ‘94 S&M model. The two notches are only on the liners for the smaller blades, not on the scales and are hidden from the profile view. A really well made knife with great detail. Not a perfect knife, but darn close to it. I’m definitely interested as well.
