Never thought I would post pics of my behind in the web but here it is.

I got this Adamas Benchmade (my first BM) yesterday and tried to edc it today. Carried it clipped in my right back pocket and played with my kids on the playground. Must have jumped a foot or two which gave the blade enough momentum to flip out and pierce my pocket. Sad that it killed my new pants but happy that I didn't carry it in the front. also somehow I felt it before touching it by accident and also happy that my 2year old didn't try to hug me at that time. So that's the warning part. Can imagine that would happen even more in the army. At least we jumped from stuff all the time back then.
I still like the knife. It's the second sharpest I ever had out of box, has the perfect size grip for me, and opens super smooth and silent without any effort.
Now my question, how do I avoid this in the future? Tightening the pivot just means it takes more force to open unintentionally. I also don't like sheaths and would prefer to use the clip.

Disclaimer: I've lots of folders and am EDCing some of them for years. Some tip up some tip down. It was all the same to me until today.

Thank you for reading and any tips.

edit 01/16/2014:
Thanks again for everybody's help.
Here is a How To for fixing my Adamas weak (in my opinion) Omega springs and a few other mods. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1145046-Adamas-Mod-and-Fix#post13086527

If you want to carry it RRP, you need to put the pocketclip on the other side of the scales so the blade is trapped by the side of the pocket. If that had been in RFP, the blade could not have opened. Even at that, I'd tighten that pivot some as that has to be really loose to do that. Outstanding knife BTW, the one I bought my son displaced a 710 that he religiously carried for 3 years straight.

Yikes. Glad the only casualty was the pants. Try switching the clip to the other side if you always carry in the back right pocket.

^^
Officer beat me to it!

How about some of those fire hose pants? :D

In all seriousness, are you against carrying tip down?

Are those 5.11 taclite pants/shorts.... If so.. Its all i wear they are just strong, pocketfilled and never let me down once

+1

I can't understand why this is such a hard concept to grasp. People choose to do otherwise and are shocked when this happens.
Never needed to and never heard of it. Now that some nice BF member explained it I know it too. Seriously not hard to grasp but thx for doubting my mental grasping capabilities. ;)
So now I will have to clip this knife always in the same spot in a particular way. Not very practical. Let's hope I don't forget it because until now I clipped all my knifes outside inside left right front and back and never had to worry.

Well that's your prerogative. Personally I like to think about the decisions I make before I make them. Like, should I put my tires on my truck vertically or horizontally, or should I put my shirt on front ways or backwards, or maybe instead of talking with my phone near my face, I'll hold it by my foot, maybe I'll hold this chainsaw by the pointy end and start er up!

OK, I'm poking a little too much fun. I don't mean to heckle I promise. I just mean to say that all things are best handled correctly. Yes you may have to think about how you clip it in your pocket but I hardly think that is something that will cause you anguish.

The detent is the only thing I don't like about the axis lock. Opens a bit generously. Glad nothing bad happened! That's pretty crappy

Yep awesome. Every pockets rim corners are reinforced to wear from knife clips. Now it seems only one of them can see use :(

I must be getting old or my pants choice is outdated lol cause those are some cool looking back pockets. I also never heard or gave it a second thought of keeping the blade towards the pocket. Thanks for the tip!...

Relax, just having a little fun. :sly:

Luckily it was in your back pocket though, im glad only your pants got cut up.

Just remember from now on to make sure that those tip up folders have the top of the blade facing the pant seam and you'll be golden.

Love your avatar, BTW.

When you posted the title as tip up disaster, I expected to see a picture of blood stained clothes. Very lucky you didn't harm yourself

Yes, I have to say that this ended much better than I thought it was going to when I first read the thread title. ;)
