An excellent and generous giveaway, Dylan. I'll play!

I think there is some improvement.

Here's my oldest traditional that I still have alongside the one I most recently bought. My tastes have changes some, but not a lot. I actually got rid of the 23.

The most recent purchase that I still have is actually another 78 pattern:

I've discovered that I really like the GEC patterns that are in the 70s, but especially 74s and 78s.

Mesquite is very plentiful around here (south Texas), Joshua. I had two trees in the front yard of my last house. I think they are lovely. And there is not better wood for smoking barbecue. Gives the meat a better flavor than hickory or any other wood. But I had never seen it used for a knife handle before. Every sample I have seen has been glorious! What beautiful wood! And you got rid of it?

By the way, you've got some good-looking knives there.

Thanks, Vince! The 23 I had was indeed beautiful! Too beautiful to keep as a safe queen, and I just wasn't going to use the 23. It was a little bigger than I prefer, and I didn't enjoy the liner lock. I only like to keep the knives I'll use, so I passed it on to someone else who could appreciate it in their collection.

Perfectly understandable. Bet that someone else is very happy!

Things change, and, at least in my case, location makes a huge impact on how I present a knife in a photo. this first picture may not be the earliest I've posted here, but since I've changes hosts for photos many of the earlier ones are no longer viewable. Still, this one is from 2007, when I was in Baghdad. This was my carry knife, and I still have it. I like the design, but not as much as I used to, because the main Wharncliff is too thick to be a really good slicer, and the secondary blades are so thin they flex.

Here's the same knife from a photo just a few weeks back.

Okay, since I don't get to just not be in, I'll nominate someone. But I have so many people I would like to nominate. I guess that I will nominate Onebigbill Onebigbill since he is the one who gave me the knife that is my most recent traditional knife picture.

I don't really feel like I've improved much, if at all. But I have certainly enjoyed my time here.

Dylan I want to congratulate you on the big 6K! I love looking at your Photo's, usually time is against me to really do some neat setting up now, and often I take photos inside which is extremely hard with no Lighting Tent or anything - so I use a large Mirror to get rid of heavy Shadows forming from incoming light from the Windows.
I have long lost my first many Photo's actually, through the Photoshop loss I literally deleted thousands of Photographs.
I used to have such an Ideal Spot for taking Photos at my House, but we have moved since, I used to have filtered light coming down through some native Punga Trees onto the very old Railways Sleepers that I made into a Garden Chair.

When I have time I stack old bits of driftwood etc to try and get an effect, Traditionals on Wood = Good! I always try to find an angle where the light highlights either the Swage on the Knife or to get a bit of light on the bone - depending o course of conditions.
I am not in, but if my post is picked my friend can I nominate Modoc Ed as the receiver, great guy- been through some rough times and he really deserves such a gorgeous knife!
Thank you for being part of us, thank you for your great generosity! and good luck everyone.

I’m in, I would love to own that beautiful knife, thank you for such a generous giveaway.

I just checked and imageshack deleted my photo that was my very first post in the traditional sub forum:

but here is my second:

Here is a photo from tonight, enjoying some excellent bourbon from a friend:

My tastes in knives are still similar, my first post was of a custom swayback (and I still love wharncliffes and swaybacks) and the second was some alox SAKs which I still enjoy. There is more whisky in my newer photos, I suppose.

Thanks much for nominating me! Love to see a a recent photo of your Schatt to check out your more improved photo skills:D:thumbsup:

Thanks for 6000 posts, most with great photos of great knives, Dylan. Your photos always inspire.
And thanks for the excuse to scroll through a few years worth of photos!
A couple of then vs nows...

My grandfather’s old Camillus, which was his “good” knife, along with his old Springfield 12ga, both of which Grandma gave me after he passed.View attachment 1404027and since I don’t carry his old knife, I found this as a stand-in.View attachment 1404029 And here’s a before of my sodbuster,View attachment 1404035and an afterView attachment 1404028Thanks for the generous giveaway!

Great GAW!

As far as photo skills, I don’t know that I’ve improved with my actual skill, but I have increased my understanding of what seems to be the “Porch Standard” as I perceive it.

Be mindful of lighting, try to pay attention to not catching yourself holding your phone in a mirror reflection, rustic or nature-ish background, etc.

Here’s my first post back at the beginning of the year:

Here’s the same 86 a few days ago. Definitely more pleasing to my eyes!

T
hanks for the shot at a beautiful knife!

Dylan! What in the world man! I can’t believe you’re offering a 78, let alone THAT 78, for a prize! One of my favorite GEC models ever. What a beauty. Incredibly generous.

Whew. After collecting myself, I scrounged through my folder to relive the horror of trading away my first GEC, a Che Chen 38. To be fair, this shot was just for a sale/trade.

There's so much generosity on these forums!
I don't think I qualify as a regular here, so this isn't an entry, but here's my 34ot that I bought some time in the early/mid 90s, a peanut that I bought a few months ago, and the forge de laguiole that I've been carrying lately. And since I can't just not enter, I'll nominate @btb01 because of his generous and enjoyable giveaway. I'm pretty sure he likes gecs too. If he doesn't want to enter, then I encourage him to nominate someone he thinks should be in it.

Congratulations on the post count Dylan, and what a great idea for a giveaway. The standard of photography on The Porch has improved massively during the time I've been here I think. I'm still in the 'point, shoot, and take a lot of pics with fingers crossed' camp! May I nominate Dennis @mitch4ging please?

One of my first pics here, I think, a Schrade-Wostenholm Lock-Back from October 2012.

My oldest photos are from 2007. And the great photobucket robbery seems to have made off with many of my photos!.

My oldest photos on BF, are not of traditionals. They are of Busse and some customs.

I will post my oldest pocket knife (and most sentimental).

My paternal grandfathers old barlow. I believe it is the first knife cut my self with. I used to watch my grandfather clean and trim his nails wirh his pocket knife. I tried it when he was not looking. Cut my nail half way through the nail bed. I could not have been more than 4 or 6.

Grandpa did not yell at me. Just said I probably would not do that again!!

I still trim my nails and clean them with a pocket knife occasionally and think of my grandpa.

If you look close, you can still see Grandpa's finger print, in the middle of the blade.

I don't carry that knife much, because it is irreplaceable.

Here is a newer photo. This Spey Blade TC is gone now. I gave it to Big Biscuits (when I saw that Bob was selling off his collection, before he passed).

Fantastic giveaway, Dylan. Very kind and generous of you brother.
Prior to getting into collecting/accumulating multiple knives I only had one folder at a time for pocket carry and one single blade folder for hunting.
I would carry those until I'd lose them somehow, usually about every 1-3 years, then replace them. Earliest ones I remember having were a scout
as a kid and a buck 110 as a young adult, both lost and long gone somewhere along the way. I started searching for and collecting knives just 4 years ago.
The pic of the white bone Schatt below was taken in Feb. 2017, about 4 months after I started this journey. It was one of the first three knives I purchased to start a collection. I've since dyed the bone as shown in the 2nd pic. Looking at the pic now I wish I hadn't altered it.:D
The 3rd pic of of my two most recent additions, a Pal Cut cattle knife and GEC 38 special.
Thanks for the opportunity at that handsome 78.:)
