TJ Schwarz Perpetua

Thanks for the answer. :)

I'm going to treat the knife as you describe, including allowing for break in (which is perfectly reasonable to me). As I said before, I really like the design in terms of size, looks and ergonomics. If the kinetics of mine end up as nice as some others have reported, I'll be more than satisfied.

Thank you! One option to accelerate this process it to over-tighten the pivot a little bit and work the action for a while, then adjust back to standard tension.

My fear is that people are backing off their pivots to achieve the smooth action they want, but are also introducing blade play. If your knife is adjusted like this then there will be very little 'break-in' going on with little to no pressure on the washers. I have seen a few complaints about not being able to adjust the knife to the point of no blade play while still being smooth. This the best explanation I can give to anyone who is having that experience.

EDIT: My point being there aren't problems tolerance-wise that are causing their adjust-ability issue.

Massdrop indicated to me no parts will be shipped for knives missing parts.

TJ, could you have Shane from Millit send me a few replacement springs?

I do not see an option to direct message you. I'll help get you taken care of, please message me on Instagram @knife.designer or through the contact form on my website. Thank you!

Last winter I ordered a merino wool scarf and neck gaiter combo for $60, Massdrop only sent me the scarf.

I spoke with customer service two times and sent five emails, they never sent me the neck gaiter or refund me the $20 difference in price.

The issue was never resolved.

I have spoken with Massdrop and Millit in detail about extra parts/warranty work.

I have been informed that warranty requests for any issues with the knife must go through Massdrop's help center.

In addition, Shane at Millit has decided to offer OEM parts virtually at cost to anyone looking for backup components. He can be contacted via Instagram @millitknives or through the contact form on their website.

Thank you all again! I apologize for falling behind a bit in this thread. I'll try to answer your questions:

It's my belief that the stiffness some people are experiencing is a product of the matte texture of the blade finish. This finish extends the break-in period somewhat. As far as the tuning of the pivot goes, it should be no tighter than the very instant the side to side play disappears. When adjusted to this tightness the effects on the smoothness of the action come down to the blade/washer surface finish, both of which will polish during break in. If you are used to the feel of a Benchmade out of the box, please note the difference in blade finish.

Thank you for the question!

I agree, it would not detract from the desired look. To be completely honest, we did not experience any issues with the thumb stud placement and height during our testing. We went through 3 different thumb stud variations before settling on the production version, a consensus between Millit, Massdrop, and myself. The feedback we received from some people on the production version was a surprise. I wonder if it has anything to do with myself and Millit's familiarity with the Umnumzaan and the nature of its thumb stud placement. That being said I am not ignoring this feedback as a designer. I have noted it for future designs I assure you! Reception of a design often has a lot to do with the muscle memory of each individual costumer and how it translates to the new geometry. My takeaway personally would be to place more energy on assuring things like this are more "universal". I have had many people reach out to tell me they think the thumb stud geometry is perfect and they don't understand what people mean. These are the challenges of designing on this level with this broad of an audience.

Thank you for the question!

Will there be another run? I really like mine a lot. I can’t say enough nice things about this knife and would purchase another if possible. The price point is spot on. Great job with this design and I love the lock without the butterfly tax.

Thanks again

I wonder how you “spoke” with CS? I’ve never seen a point of contact other than email, help ticket or snail mail. If you’re aware of a phone number, please share it! That’s been one of the big complaints of MD CS; no live point of contact.

Are you just yanking my chain?

I love this knife. But one thing I did notice is that sliding lock (not axis lock) does bump into the blade slightly, moving it when you pull it all the way back. Did anyone else notice that?

I still love it though. Hope they make another run

You guys going to bladeshow West? Any of these folders there?

Massdrop Support phone number (415) 340-2999 is how I "spoke" with CS. No, I'm not yanking your chain.

I just thought I’d update my impressions on the Perpetua. I’ve been carrying it every day since I got it.
Following TJ’s advice posted above, I re-tightened the pivot and just randomly played with it for the next two days to wear in and polish the washers. After the two days I adjusted the pivot back to how I could had it before.
Before doing this I had slight side to side play, now I have none and it’s beautifully smooth.
I’m really happy with this knife. Such a great user name. The blade finish is my favourite out of all my knives. Such a heavy beautiful stonewash.

Yeah, I've tried that number before. It just refers you to the online support center with no option to talk to a human being then auto hangs up. You must have had better luck than I. Do you just press "0" or something?

I had some light speckling rust on the spine. I could rub it off with my fingers. Never seen anything like that before. Will just have to keep my eye on it.

Surprised that Millit just sends out replacement springs intead of having you send in your Perpetua so they can find out what went wrong.

Or did they just do what you requested?
