To ivory, or not to ivory?

For me the answer is almost always to Ivory. Be it Mammoth or Elephant, Traditional or Modern, just about every knife I carry has Ivory on it.

It's about the knives, guys. Leave the politics and morality at the door please.
I see the thread veering back off-topic. Keep it on topic please.

Not to anyone in particular, jon. There are a few that are heading in the wrong direction, . My post was intended as a course correction. The discussion of whether it's right or wrong is what doesn't belong here. There's a political sub forum for that.

edited to add; You guys are tough. There are at least 3 previous moderator posts in this thread asking that the discussion not go to the legal, political, moral questions about Elephant ivory.

jon_slider, I didn't see anything wrong with your posts and was not singling you out.

I did see more then one reference to "I won't own it". That's the kind of remark that doesn't add to the discussion of the knives, it just opens the thread to a discussion that doesn't belong here.

If more members read and followed the rules for this forum Frank and I would never have to post these reminders. Thanks for listening

In all my years of owning knives I have to say that I get the most pleasure when I have these ivory handled knives in my pocket, when they come out some person always notices and wants to start a conversation about how unique they are and how their grandfather had one similar to it. They handle the knife's and eye it from all angles and you can see the smiles as it forms on their face. Next I get the opportunity to try and dispel the rumors about Ivory and show them what a good knife looks like, compared to the one they can buy for under 10 dollars in the local stores. My grandson has a elephant scaled knife I gave him when he was born and in a few more years he will be ready to be responsible enough to handle and operate such a tool. Right, wrong , Indifferent, I think Ill leave it to the philosophers to decide my crime but until then I think Ivory is a fantastic scale material that allows people through physical connection to look back through distant memories and see their elders knives lost now to time in most cases. just that one touch and the link is forged for some allowing therm a few seconds to their past when most boys and men carried knives and while not many were Ivory scaled they always knew someone that had one and it made them dream. Of course I like Ivory and hope to see its use continue. Cheers!

This knife is very special to me, and so I carry and use it. Nice, big, thick slabs of pre-ban bark ivory.

I polish the patina out, but this is after a few days use and carry in YNP, hand forged 1084.

I'd love to ivory, if I could afford it! I adore the hue it takes on as it's handled over time.

The mammoth stuff is good looking, and I like it as well, but plain white ivory still attracts me more.

Here is a new mammoth ivory knife I picked up. Tuna Valley gunstock jack. I really like the colors in this one.
